Thorn and Thornwood

Thorn is the name the peoples give to every small, hard, spined tree and shrub that takes ground nobody holds: the thickets that close a path in a season, the hedges that keep a field or a clearing, the brambles of old terraces, and the lone thorn trees of the wind-scoured heights. It matters most in the Briarreach, where the Thornbound Circles of the Thorn Elves grow it into walls and season its wood for trade. Thornwood is that seasoned wood.

Appearance

Thicket Thorn

The common thorn of the Briarreach is a dense shrub or small tree, from head height to twice that, with black-grey bark, twisted branches, and stiff spines as long as a finger on every twig. It flowers white before its leaves in early spring, so that a thicket stands like a drift of late snow, and sets small dark blue-black fruit, bitter until the frost. In summer it is a wall of small dull leaves; in winter, bare, it shows how close the spines grow. A thicket smells faintly sour and almond-sweet when it blooms, and of nothing at all the rest of the year.

Bramble

Bramble is a sprawling, arching cane armed with hooked prickles, rooting wherever its tips touch the ground. It flowers pink-white in summer and fruits black in autumn, and it is the first growth to cover a fallen wall or an abandoned field.

Escarpment Thorn

On the Windscar heights thorn grows alone, one tree to a ledge or a ravine head, low, wind-bent, and grey, its crown combed flat to leeward and its roots gripping cracks in the rock. Some along the escarpment routes have been struck by lightning and did not burn: they stand split and blackened, leafless on one side and in leaf on the other.

Habitat and Range

Thorn takes broken and abandoned ground, wherever light reaches soil. The Briarreach, a forest that keeps breaking through windthrow and deadfall, is full of it, and the clearings that will not stay clear are clearings going back to thorn. In the open country the terraces of the Witnessfields have long gone to grass, heath, and thorn, and bramble and scrub take the old terraces of the Dry Folds in the Leeward Folds. Farmers of the cradle-web plant thorn as hedges along lanes and fields. On the far side, lone escarpment thorns stand along the routes of the High Scars in the Windscar Expanse.

Behaviour and Temperament

Thorn is patient and greedy for light. Left alone, a thicket thickens outward a pace or two a year from suckers and seed dropped by birds, and a path not walked for one season can be closed by the next. Bramble arches over and roots ahead of itself. Laid and woven, thorn grows into a living fence that thickens with every year of tending, which is what the Thorn Elves have made of it.

Life Cycle

A thorn grows from a stone carried by a bird, slowly at first, and can live for centuries; a hedge laid every few years renews itself from the same roots almost without end. Cut thorn regrows from the stump. Bramble canes live two years, fruiting in the second, and the clump goes on from its roots.

Uses and Dangers

A Thornbound settlement is a cluster of dwellings around a hidden clearing, ringed with cultivated thorn-hedge and woven deadwood, with only a few ways in that anyone outside the circle knows. Keeping those hedges is part of the endless labour of the watch, and a Human village clearing towards the Briarreach may find its woodcutters turned back at a hedge it did not know was there. Outward from the Waitfield goes seasoned thornwood: hard, heavy, close-grained wood, pale yellow-brown and darkening with age, cut from the hedge-lines and dried for years. It is prized for tool handles, pegs, cudgels, and walking staffs. The fruit makes a sour preserve and a dye, and hedge thorn gives farmers a fence no beast pushes through.

The dangers are torn skin, torn cloth, and the paths thorn closes. Practitioners of Nature Magic raise barbed growth from hedges and brush to make a lane a bleeding choke point, grow hedge walls in moments, and hide a sacred grove’s inner shrine in a maze of bramble; a warden who has worked Bark Hide on their own skin crosses thorn without flinching.

Lore and Belief

To the Thorn Elves the hedge is the boundary that judges who may approach, and a stranger waits at its edge until watchers come; what lies inside is not spoken of to guests. Basin farmers say a thorn hedge keeps out more than cattle, and do not cut the old ones lightly.

Orcs of the Windscar take the lone lightning-struck thorns of the escarpment routes as the marks of Rakhal the Storm-Caller, still waiting for the next storm, and no escort cuts one or camps beneath it. Farmers of the Confluence Basins tell that Anvelle the Harvest-Mother can make roots and thorns burst from the ground to shield the innocent.

Outlaws and raiders on the frontier learn the hedge the hard way: a war-band that tried to cut its way through a Thornbound hedge was met at the gap by watchers who had heard every stroke, and the songs say none of it came out.
