Echo-Walkers

The Echo-Walkers are the guides of the Whispering Trace, the realm of death, reflection, and remnant, the space between the living and the gone. They help lost Echoes, the traces the dead leave behind, find release, reconciliation, or stable passage into the Eternal Record.

Appearance

An Echo-Walker is a translucent figure of human height and shape that flickers like a candle flame, brightening and fading, so that it is easier to see in the corner of the eye than straight on. It has no face, only a smooth, pale blur where a face should be, and yet whoever meets one feels it looking at them. It wears the tattered remnants of a former life: a frayed cloak, a cracked belt, a faded sleeve, all as grey and faint as itself. It moves without sound over the ground, and speaks in whispers that seem to come from just behind the listener’s shoulder. It smells of old dust and dried flowers.

Habitat and Range

They walk the ruins, graveyards, and misty woods of the Whispering Trace, along its rivers of liquid shadow and among its skeletal trees, wherever a lost Echo lingers.

Behaviour and Temperament

They are guides and watchers. Closure, truth, and the honouring of the dead are what they value. An Echo-Walker goes to an Echo that cannot rest, stays beside it, and helps it towards release, reconciliation, or passage into Record. They are quiet and melancholic, and they see visitors as loud or forgetful. They will guide a living visitor who comes to speak with the dead, if the visitor is respectful.

Abilities

They need neither food nor sleep, living on the memories of the living, and they last as long as they are remembered. They can find an Echo anywhere in the Trace and speak to it.

Life Cycle

They are immortal as long as they are remembered, and fade as memory of them fades. Whether they were once Echoes themselves, or something else, is not known.

Uses and Dangers

Travellers come to the Whispering Trace to speak with the dead or to find closure, and the Echo-Walkers are their guides. They do no harm, though what they help a traveller face can be hard.

Lore and Belief

Many peoples on Caeldon tell of a faceless guide who leads the dead, and give it the name of a god; most honour the god who guides the dead’s Echoes at the Veil’s threshold, Ennor the Grave-Watcher, under their own names. The Echo-Walkers are not that god, but a traveller’s tale of one may have shaped how the god is pictured. Teachers of Trace Magic are said to treat them with great respect.
