Lucids, a bestiary plate

Lucids

The Lucids are the guardians of the Dreaming Veil, the realm of imagination, art, and dream. They are beings of light and thought who take, most often, the shape of a dreamer’s ideal self, and they help the lost find their way back to waking.

Appearance

No two dreamers see the same Lucid, because a Lucid shows each the shape that dreamer would most like to be: older or younger, stronger, calmer, wiser, but always recognizably the dreamer, so that meeting one is like meeting oneself grown right. Seen by someone else, the same Lucid is a figure of soft, warm light with a face that will not settle. Its edges blur into the dream around it. It moves without walking, simply being nearer or further, and when it speaks it seems to speak in the dreamer’s own inner voice. Travellers say it smells of whatever the dreamer finds most comforting, bread, rain, a mother’s hair.

Habitat and Range

They move through the Dreaming Veil wherever there are dreamers, and especially where a dream has gone astray.

Behaviour and Temperament

They are artisans of reality and gentle guides. They weave dreams into coherent narratives, and help lost travellers find their way back to wakefulness. They do not interfere with a dreamer’s agency; they offer hints and nudges, a door left ajar, a familiar voice, and leave the choice to the dreamer. They see outsiders as sleepers who need to wake up.

Abilities

They do not age or die; they last as long as there is imagination in the cosmos. A Lucid can shape a dream around a dreamer, and can show a dreamer that they are dreaming, which in the Dreaming Veil is the beginning of all power over it.

Life Cycle

Lucids do not age or die; they exist as long as there is imagination in the cosmos. Whether new ones arise, and from what, is not known.

Uses and Dangers

To a dreamer lost in the Veil, a Lucid is the way home. They do no harm. The only danger travellers report is a dreamer who would rather stay with the Lucid’s shape of themselves than wake.

Lore and Belief

Dream-guides and teachers of Dream Magic on Caeldon speak of a bright self met in deep dreams who shows the way out, and many ordinary people say they have met it once, in fever or grief. Some take it for a god or a guardian ancestor; it is a being of the Dreaming Veil.
