The Closure of the First Nesting Confluence

The span, c. 178,000-c. 162,000 BR, in which egg blight in the Thaluren's oldest sacred water forced the Returning Concord to close it to ordinary return. See The Threads of History.

Overview

The closure of The First Nesting Confluence is the first great Thaluren spawning disaster remembered.

Inside The Returning Concord and The Tidebound Reaches, egg blight poisons the oldest sacred water, and the Thaluren must close it to ordinary return and find out whether their way of return can live on in other waters.

Blight in the Ancestral Water

The closure begins when failed clutches at the First Nesting Confluence stop looking like bad luck.

The Thaluren know risk. Currents shift, seasons fail, egg-takers lie in the pools to raid the spawning grounds, and run-followers wait for the young coming down to the sea. But this time the danger is inside the most trusted water of all. Eggs laid under proper watch fail, hatchlings die, and the sanctuary keepers can no longer promise that returning to the oldest water is enough to keep life going.

That is worse than a sickness. If the oldest sacred water kills the clutches it was meant to receive, the Concord's deepest proof of its own continuity fails. The Thaluren must ask where holiness lives: in the place, in the return, in the young who survive, or in all three.

Guarding, Turning Aside, and Broken Certainty

The closure does not begin as abandonment.

Sanctuary Custodians, Run-Watchers, Clutch-Watch Circles, and Sea-Settlement Speakers first try to save the old water: tighter timing, closer watch on every clutch, heavier rites, guards on the approaches day and night. Keepers sit by the failing beds through whole seasons and drive off every egg-taker that comes near. One clutch-watch is still told of in the Reaches: a circle that stood in the shallows through a whole flood season, spears out against the egg-takers and the current alike, and lost three of its own to keep a single clutch that hatched dead. For a while, the Thaluren fight for the old water before they let anyone turn away from it.

Before the Strangers Came

The closure comes before the estuary meetings that later show Thaluren custom to outsiders.

The Thaluren did not learn their strict spawning rules, guarded passage, and turned-aside runs because outsiders arrived at their estuaries. Those customs already had a wound behind them. By the time of The Estuary Terms, the Thaluren already knew that one poisoned sanctuary could force a whole people to tell sacred refusal, honest narrowing, emergency passage, and false claim apart.

A stranger who comes into Thaluren waters is entering the waters of a people whose oldest closure taught them that the young can be lost to carelessness, pride, or blind reverence as easily as to an enemy.

Historical Significance

The closure is the first great hardening of the Thaluren after their way of return took shape. Before it, the Returning Concord is proper ascent, watched clutches, and guarded sanctuaries. After it, every one of those has an edge. Those who watch the runs must decide whether a turned-aside run is still a true return. Those who guard the sanctuaries must decide whether a poisoned place can matter more than living clutches. The sea-settlements must decide how far return can change before they stop being one people.
