The First Equilibrium

The moment, c. 12,000,000 BR, when balance in the core became durable enough that it was a true Material Plane, with spatial law holding everywhere and cause and persistence holding at large scale. See The Planes.

Overview

At The First Equilibrium, the long-settling balanced core left by The Inward Sundering becomes a true Material Plane.

After an age beyond counting, the balance that the surviving core had to keep winning again and again begins to hold of itself. A centre that merely survived becomes a realm that lasts.

The long lead-up is told in The Long Settlement of the Balanced Core.

The Long-Settling Core

After The Inward Sundering, the balanced core survives because the most incompatible extremes have been flung outward into planes of their own.

Surviving is not the same as being whole. The core is still a settling, half-made stuff, not a finished world. It endures through long give-and-take among the Harmonics: no single power can master it for good, yet no lasting balance holds either. Its recovery is not one sudden healing, but an immense age of balancing.

So the Material Plane is not an untouched remnant of the old proto-anchor sphere. It is the prize of a second, slower victory: not over the collapse itself, but over an unsteadiness that might have left the surviving centre forever unfinished.

Threshold of Stable Balance

The First Equilibrium is the hour when that long settling crosses from fragile survival into an order that holds itself up.

Three changes mark the crossing. The give-and-take of the Harmonics grows lasting, so that no single Harmonic can seize the whole core for long. Spatial law holds across the whole realm, not only in scattered pockets. The meeting of matter becomes steady enough that persistence, orientation, and cause and effect hold everywhere, without the constant brink of crisis.

That is more than survival. The balanced core no longer lasts merely because the catastrophe is over. It lasts because balance has become one of its own unbreakable truths.

The Material Plane Becomes Possible

Once the threshold is crossed, the Material Plane is no longer a promise waiting in the dark.

The newly steadied realm can now let great bodies of matter gather: planets, seas, skies, and the long-lived lands where mortal life can one day arise. That is why the First Equilibrium is more than a naming. It is the moment the cosmos gains a balanced realm that can bear change and difference without flying apart into its poles again.

Everything after depends on it. Without the First Equilibrium there is no steady world in which species can adapt, civilizations rise, or planets such as Caeldon form. The first great bodies that follow are told in The First Celestial Condensations.

Historical Significance

The First Equilibrium turns survival after the breaking of the cosmos into a world fit for history.

The Material Plane is not simply "the middle" of the cosmos. It is hard-won, the fruit of a long balancing after separation and collapse. And it shows something true of reality everywhere: it holds not by ending strain, but by setting opposing forces to hold each other up.

The First Equilibrium answers The Inward Sundering. The Sundering left a chance that a balanced realm might survive. The First Equilibrium is where that chance became the ground every mortal stands on.
