The Holdmaking of the Ironspine
The span, c. 465,000-c. 445,000 BR, in which the earliest Dwarves of the Ironspine became a hold people, for whom enduring means sound halls, safe passages, and memory cut in stone. See Stone and the Deep.
Overview
In the Ironspine, the earliest settled Dwarves harden into the ancestral hold people some time before the Ironspine Holds are founded.
Between the first settling and the first realm, cut chambers, defended passages, guarded craft, and memory kept in stone make the Ironspine Dwarves a hold people.
From Stabilized People to Hold People
After The First Dwarven Stabilization, the Ironspine is no longer only the home of a lasting people.
Chambers gather memory of use. Passages, vaults, and defended gates come to show how a people should live, not just where it can survive. The Dwarves stay broad and varied, but they come to one conviction: to endure is to keep sound walls, passages that hold, and memory cut into stone.
The oldest Dwarven line becomes a cause as well as a lineage, an answer to what Dwarves are for.
Chambers, Keeping, and Memory in Stone
In the Ironspine, power gathers to whoever can keep the roof up.
In chambers, vaults, workshops, passage junctions, and archive halls, the past still judges the present. There is no single realm yet, only a shared temper. Power comes from kept stone and remembered upkeep: the eldest who keep the chambers judge, and the young who dig them obey. The mountain judges too. A brace that fails, a flooded working, or bad air in a dead pocket brings down any hold that is badly kept, and buries its people with it.
The new holds guard what they cannot lose. The deepest chambers, behind the most doors, hold the young, who are still setting into lasting form, where an enemy would reach last. And the holds take ground as they spread: the Goblin seam-warrens of the mountain margins are closed in, seam by seam, in The Enclosure of the Seams, which runs beside the holdmaking for tens of thousands of years.
Before the Holds
Holdmaking makes a realm possible without creating one.
Once the Dwarven branch has hardened around chambers, defended passages, and memory in stone, the Founding of the Ironspine Holds needs only to bind it together. The Holds take up a people already known across the mountain depths.
Later Dwarven peoples still answer to the old hold standard for the same reason. An Ironspine people existed to dig deeper, gather, or quarrel over before any named Holds did.
Historical Significance
Holdmaking divides the forming of the Dwarven branch from the founding of the Ironspine Holds, which bind the hold answer into a realm but do not start it. The answer arises when the Ironspine Dwarves become a people of endurance, guarded stores, and memory in stone, the standard against which later Dwarven peoples such as The Stonewake Compact are measured.
Not all the first holds survived. Some were emptied before any hold had a name, and their chambers lie dark in the roots, unmapped, failing without warning; nobody can tell from the doorway what was left behind in them.
The holds' oldest heroes are the first chamber-wardens, who slept across the doors of the young-chambers with a pick in hand, and the oldest Dwarven oath is still sworn over a pick laid across a doorway. A hold child who wants to be thought brave sleeps one night at the threshold of an empty chamber; most come back at first light, and the ones who tell of a knock from inside are not believed, aloud.
