The Great Polarization
The long early strain in which the first field of reality was sharpened towards extremes it could not hold together. See The Ages of Caeldon.
Overview
Through the long cosmic age of The Great Polarization, elemental and abstract Harmonic forces pull the early proto-anchor sphere ever harder towards extremes that cannot live side by side.
This is the age in which one shared sphere fills with strains, elemental and abstract, that grow and grow within it, until nothing is left but the road to The Inward Sundering.
One Sphere, Many Gradients
When the Great Polarization begins, the proto-anchor field is still one unbroken sphere, not a set of separate planes.
Conditions vary across it, but by slow shading, not by hard edges. Neighbouring tendencies bleed into each other, and even fierce opposites stay joined within the one whole. It is no map of finished realms, but a vast, restless sea of becoming.
The later planes are not made from nothing at the Sundering. They are what tears free of strains already ripening inside this one shared sphere.
The Sharpening of Extremes
As more Primes wake and more Harmonics harden, the sphere is honed from many sides at once.
Elemental forces begin the great sorting: structure against flow, change against stillness, motion against fixity. Later abstract forces drive it deeper: revelation against concealment, law against dissolution, perfect completion against open incompleteness, memory against erasure. The result is no single fault, but a web of strains, each sharpening the others. Absence and excess, order and undoing, exposure and obscurity all grow harder to reconcile within one shared world.
That is why the Great Polarization is more than a slow drift apart. It is a long age in which the cosmos learns its own warring possibilities too fully to hold them together in one undivided form.
Towards Collapse
By the late Great Polarization, the proto-anchor sphere is still whole, but its wholeness can no longer last.
The same shared surface that once let opposites shade into one another now forces too many incompatible conditions to touch. The sphere reaches breaking strain as elemental and abstract Harmonics sharpen it from every side. It has not yet broken, but it is doomed. One more blow, and it can no longer remain one world.
The Great Polarization is the long prelude to the Inward Sundering. The Sundering is the breaking; the Great Polarization is the age that makes the breaking certain.
Historical Significance
The Great Polarization shows how the later order of the planes was prepared before it was torn apart.
The separate planes are the fruit of too much definition building up, not of some arbitrary cutting of the cosmos. And it is why the Inward Sundering strikes so deep: it does not shatter a cosmos at peace, but ends a cosmos grown too much at war with itself to endure.
The Great Polarization stands between the first forming of the Harmonics and the tearing away of the extremes. Without it, the Sundering would come out of nowhere. With it, the Sundering is the last blow of a strain that lasted longer than any mind can grasp.
