The First Elven Stabilization
The disciplining of an old inheritance in the forest into a durable people, the Elves, c. 500,000-c. 450,000 BR. See The Ages of Caeldon.
Overview
The First Elven Stabilization is the long age in which the oldest lasting Elven line takes flesh on Caeldon.
An older Verdant-born inheritance is tamed into a lasting Material Plane species. The first Elven people grows through the Elderweald and the older Roothollows beneath it, and every later Elven history starts with them: the rooting, the first civilization, the great branchings, and the wounds between the branches.
From Verdant Inheritance to Material Species
The first Elves of Caeldon are not yet a forest people.
Their forebears bear the mark of the Verdant Expanse more plainly: all growth, driven by life's own surge, never quite at rest in the world's balance. Over long ages on Caeldon that inheritance is settled rather than lost. What comes of it is a true planetary people with deep ties to growth, place, and memory, no longer bound to the Expanse's unchecked abundance.
Elves do not tell their origin as an accident. They tell it as the old living surge, tamed and kept.
The Elderweald and the Roothollows
The first lasting Elves take root in the great forest and root-depths later called the Elderweald above and the older Roothollows below.
There are no Wood, High, Thorn, or Dark Elves yet. There is one people of living settlements, remembered places, groves whose eldest are obeyed, and root-ways reaching down into the dark. That is why the Rootcrown Concord is remembered as the root of all Elven peoples, not as one branch among many.
The forest shaped them as much as their blood did. Hollows open under the leaf-litter; a falling elder tree can crush a dwelling and flood a string of hollows in one night; the wet season drowns paths that held in autumn; brown bears and grey wolves hunt the dim floor. Some stands of that first forest still live: a few groves, Oldstand among them, are older than the Concord itself.
Before the Branchings
The first Elven stabilization comes before the quarrels that divide Elven history.
It precedes the harder forest-craft that later helps make the Thornbound Circles, the lofty shaping that later raises the Crownbough Courts, and the catastrophe that later tears the Gloamroot Covenant away in grief and abandonment. None of them could happen unless one older people had first grown strong enough to branch without withering.
Here Elven life on Caeldon takes root, and the root grows strong enough to split. The first branch hardens in The Rooting of the Elderweald and becomes a civilization in The Founding of the Rootcrown Concord.
Historical Significance
Elven branches stay kin even when they come to blows. Wood, High, Thorn, and Dark Elves have no separate births, and every feud between them is a feud inside one family: every branch, every frontier, and every catastrophe goes back to this one people.
Grove children still play at the first hunts, one of them the bear and the rest the kin who drove it from the hollow. Forest-edge Humans whisper that the oldest stands hide something worth guarding from that first age; the groves have never said what, and their hunters will follow a trespasser for days. The wolf-hunt and the bear-hunt of the first forest are still the two great feats a young Wood Elf may be measured by, and neither is ever done for sport.
