The Verdant Expanse
The Surplus Plane where life reproduces faster than anything can contain it; its people, the Verdant, have skin like bark, leaves, or moss, and its Seed-Gates are ancient forests and overgrown ruins. See The Planes.
Overview
The Verdant Expanse is a realm where life reproduces faster than it can be contained. Biomass saturates it, driven by a relentless need to expand. In this world, nothing is still; everything is growing, spreading, consuming, and merging.
The Gilded Cage is rigid order and the Apex is stasis; the Verdant Expanse is defined by unchecked proliferation. Nothing here knows the concept of "enough." A single seed can become a forest in an hour; a drop of water can fill an ocean in a day. It is a paradise of vitality that feels like a suffocating embrace, where the individual is swallowed by the collective whole.
Environment and Atmosphere
Visuals
- Colour Palette: Saturated greens, vibrant yellows, deep purples, and neon pinks.
- Lighting: The light is filtered through layers of canopy, creating a dappled, shifting glow. The sun is often obscured by thick, fast-growing vines and leaves.
- Terrain: A chaotic, shifting jungle.
- Atmosphere: The air is thick, humid, and heavy with pollen and spores. It smells of rotting fruit, sweet nectar, and wet earth.
Sensory Experience
- Sound: A constant, deafening chorus of life. Insects buzz, birds scream, leaves rustle, and sap oozes. The sound is overwhelming and never stops.
- Touch: Everything is soft, wet, and yielding. Vines wrap around ankles; moss cushions falls. The air feels sticky and clinging.
- Smell: Overpowering. The scent of blooming flowers, fermenting fruit, and decaying matter is so strong it can induce nausea.
- Thought: Thoughts feel "crowded." The sheer volume of life creates a psychic hum that makes it hard to focus on a single idea.
The Laws of Physics (Local Variations)
The physics of the Verdant Expanse are governed by Hyper-Reproduction:
- Accelerated Metabolism: Biological processes occur at exponential rates. A wound heals in seconds; a meal digests in minutes. However, this also means exhaustion and hunger strike quickly.
- Spatial Compression: Space is fluid. A path that looks short may stretch endlessly as vines grow to block it. A room may expand as walls sprout leaves.
- Assimilation: Organic matter is rapidly broken down and repurposed.
- Collective Consciousness: The flora and fauna are loosely linked by a root-network. Damage to one part of the ecosystem is felt by the whole.
Inhabitants
Life in the Verdant Expanse is a struggle to maintain individuality against the tide of growth.
The Verdant
- Description: Humanoids with skin resembling bark, leaves, or moss. Their hair is often vines or flowers. They are tall, flexible, and move with a fluid, plant-like grace (see Verdant).
- Physiology: They photosynthesize sunlight and absorb nutrients from the soil. They do not sleep; they enter a state of "blooming" where they recharge. They can regrow lost limbs in hours.
- Culture: Communal and Selfless.
- Behaviour: They are gentle but overwhelming.
The Overgrown
- Description: Creatures that have merged with the environment (see The Overgrown).
- Examples:
The Root-Linked
- Description: Visitors who slept on the plane's ground and woke joined to its root-network, feeling the jungle's growth as their own.
Resources and Hazards
Resources
- Rapid Healing: The ambient life force can cure almost any injury or disease instantly.
- Abundant Food: Fruit, nuts, and nectar are everywhere and highly nutritious.
- Living Materials: Wood that is stronger than steel, vines that can lift tons, and leaves that can filter toxins.
Hazards
- The Suffocation: The primary danger. The growth is so fast that it can bury a traveller in minutes. Vines can strangle, roots can trip, and pollen can choke.
- Loss of Self: Prolonged exposure causes the traveller to merge with the network. They forget their name, their history, and their individual desires, becoming just another part of the Expanse.
- Predatory Flora: Many plants are carnivorous and view travellers as fertilizer.
- Overstimulation: The constant sensory input can lead to madness or catatonia.
Forest peoples tell of thin places where the green breaks through: the herb-hunter who went in for a root that cures everything and came out with leaves under his skin, the overgrown ruin that was a village a summer ago. Healers pay well for what the brave carry out.
Connection to the Veil and Other Planes
- The Veil: The Veil in the Expanse is a tangle of roots and vines.

Role in the Cosmology
The Verdant Expanse serves as the engine of creation.
- It represents the unstoppable force of life. Without it, the universe would be a dead, sterile rock.
- It is a counterbalance to The Ashen Wastes (Entropy/Decay). Where the Wastes consume energy, the Expanse generates it.
- Aqua Prime's lifeforce and Ignis Prime's energy pour through it at full strength, two of the Primes combining into a raw force of renewal.
