The Chromatic Chord

The Surging Deep

The Harmonic of Aqua: water, flow, life, and adaptation, the circulation of the cosmos; its Tidesingers speak in song and see the universe as one system to be kept in balance. See The Planes.

Overview

The Surging Deep is the Harmonic realm of Water, Flow, and Life. It is the plane where fluidity is not just a property of matter but the fundamental nature of existence. Unlike the Anchors, where water is a substance, in the Surging Deep, water is the concept of change, adaptation, and continuity. It is the blood of the cosmos, the circulatory system that carries life, energy, and memory throughout the universe.

Life needs movement, and this Harmonic supplies it. Without flow, there is stagnation; without adaptation, there is death. It is the primary conduit for biological transfer, the medium through which life spreads, complementary to The Iron Backbone (Structure/Stability) and the counterbalance to The Frozen Moment (Stasis). Through it, "what is" becomes "what could be."

Environment and Atmosphere

Visuals

  • Colour Palette: Deep blues, turquoise, emerald green, and silver. Colours shift with the depth and current, ranging from the pale surface to the abyssal dark.
  • Lighting: The light is refracted and diffused, creating dancing patterns on surfaces.
  • Terrain: A landscape of endless oceans, floating islands of kelp, and underwater cities of coral and crystal.
  • Atmosphere: The air is humid and thick, smelling of salt, ozone, and marine life. It feels like breathing water; every breath is a reminder of the plane's nature.

Sensory Experience

  • Sound: A constant, rhythmic pulse of waves, currents, and the songs of deep creatures. The sound is immersive, surrounding the traveller from all directions. Silence is rare and unsettling.
  • Touch: Everything is wet, smooth, and yielding. Water feels like a second skin. Touching a surface feels like touching a living thing; it responds to pressure and movement.
  • Smell: Salt, seaweed, and the scent of rain. The air is rich with the smell of life.
  • Thought: Thoughts flow like water. Ideas connect and merge. Linear thinking is difficult; the mind moves in currents and eddies.

The Laws of Physics (Local Variations)

The physics of the Surging Deep are governed by Fluid Dynamics and Adaptation:

  1. The Law of Flow: Nothing is static. All things move, shift, and change. Resistance to flow causes pressure and eventual rupture.
  2. The Law of Adaptation: Life here adapts instantly to its environment. A traveller's body will begin to change to suit the conditions (gills, pressure resistance, etc.).
  3. The Law of Circulation: Energy and matter are constantly recycled. Nothing is wasted; everything is repurposed. Death feeds life.
  4. The Law of Depth: The deeper one goes, the more pressure and truth one encounters. Surface thoughts are shallow; deep thoughts are profound.

Inhabitants

Life in the Surging Deep is defined by resilience and interconnectedness.

The Tidesingers

  • Description: Humanoids with skin like polished sea glass, hair like flowing kelp, and eyes that reflect the ocean's depths. They communicate through song and vibration (see Tidesingers).
  • Physiology: They do not breathe air; they extract oxygen from water. They can survive in any pressure or temperature. They cannot die while the flow continues.
  • Culture: Harmonizers and Healers. They see the universe as one interconnected system. They value balance, empathy, and the preservation of life.
  • Behaviour: They are calm and fluid. They speak in melodies and rhythms. They view outsiders as "rigid" or "dry."

The Current-Bound

  • Description: Entities that are part of the flow itself, taking the form of water, mist, or living currents (see Current-Bound).
  • Function: They guide the movement of energy and matter through the plane.
  • Examples:

The Drowned

  • Description: Anyone, visitor or native, whom the plane has swallowed. They are trapped in the depths, aware but unable to escape.
  • Decline Trigger: They become part of the ecosystem, their memories feeding the life of the plane.

The Deep-Dwellers

  • Description: Beings of the lightless water far below the currents, seen only as great slow shapes and lights rising from the dark; the Tidesingers do not sing to them, and nothing that went down to meet one has come back to say what they are.

Resources and Hazards

Resources

  • Healing: The ambient life force can cure almost any injury or disease.
  • Adaptation: The ability to adapt to any environment, from extreme heat to crushing pressure.
  • Memory of Water: Access to the collective memory of all life that has ever existed.

Hazards

  • The Drown: The primary danger. A traveller may become so immersed in the flow that they lose their sense of self and become part of the current.
  • The Pressure: The deeper one goes, the more the pressure compresses the body and mind. Too much depth can crush a traveller.
  • The Current: Being swept away by a powerful current can strand a traveller in a distant part of the plane.
  • The Stagnation: Paradoxically, resisting the flow can cause stagnation, leading to decay and death.

Sailors and river peoples tell of the water-gates: the drowned who come back from the depths speaking of a sea with no surface, the diver who went down for a pearl in a sacred pool and came up a year later, not knowing which way the shore lay.

Connection to the Veil and Other Planes

  • The Veil: The Veil in the Surging Deep is a network of currents and channels.
  • Connections:

Role in the Cosmology

The Surging Deep serves as the circulatory system of the universe.

  • It represents the necessity of movement for life. Without flow, the universe would stagnate and die.
  • It answers The Iron Backbone (Structure) with motion: where the Backbone holds, the Deep moves.
  • As the great conduit of Aqua Prime among the Primes, it carries life and renewal through the cosmos and keeps the universe alive and adaptable.
