Overview

The Warden of the Returning Deep sees that what lives may dissolve, return, and be taken back into the wider cycle without losing all distinction. It is the Steward that prevents Aqua's depths from becoming total engulfment.

All things touched by water are worn down, carried away, and eventually returned. The Warden sees that this return gives back rather than annihilates. It stands at the threshold where nourishment becomes surrender, and where surrender must not become obliteration.

Appearance and Presence

The Warden appears as a cloaked figure made of midnight water, starless and immense. Its outline is visible only because the surrounding world bends towards it as though drawn by tide.

• Visuals: Its face appears only as a pale reflection on the inside of its hood, like a moon seen at the bottom of a well.
• The Atmosphere: Nearby, sound becomes muffled, grief becomes heavy, and the instinct to resist everything begins to loosen.
• The Voice: It speaks like words heard underwater: slow, distorted, and inescapably intimate.

Office and Mandate

Its office concerns return without erasure.

• It receives the rightful surrender of what must dissolve.
• It prevents the cycle of return from becoming predatory absorption.
• It opposes all forces that would reduce life to a single undifferentiated sea.

This office matters because Aqua's sustaining of life and Aqua's vastness are dangerously close. The Warden preserves the line between them.

Powers and Expressions

• The Gentle Pull: It can ease beings, memories, or workings into rightful release when they are held too tightly by terror or refusal.
• Depth Reckoning: It can tell whether a dissolution is true return or hostile engulfment.
• Abyssal Containment: It can imprison entities that seek to consume all boundaries through flood, hunger, or total assimilation.
• The Drawn Tide: It can call back energies or essences that have strayed too far from the cycle that should receive them.

• With Aqua Prime: The Warden expresses the deepest and most dangerous side of Aqua's return: dissolution that still nourishes.
• With Umbra Prime: Both oversee departure, but where Umbra keeps the trace, the Warden governs the surrender into the greater whole.
• With Nyx Vora and predatory abyssal forces: It stands against consumption disguised as return.
• With the Drowned Mother: It recognizes in her the terrible distortion of necessity into sacrifice without limit; her Drowned Court of sacrificed dead is everything this office refuses.
