The Chromatic Chord

The Silence

The Deficit Plane without meaning, the cruellest of the five because what it takes is the self; its natives are the Hollows, and its Quiet Gates are libraries where nobody reads any more and places of deep meditation. See The Planes.

Overview

The Silence is a realm where meaning is a myth and existence is a hollow shell. It is a plane defined by the absolute absence of communication, purpose, and connection. In this world, words have no power, thoughts fade instantly, and actions have no consequence beyond the immediate moment. Where meaning fails, something plainer fails first, and what it is depends on the place: sound at one edge, speech, memory, or motion at others. These are local faces of the one absence, not separate absences.

Unlike the Scourge (where violence is the language) or the Parched (where hunger is the drive), the Silence is defined by nihilism and disconnection. It is a world where nothing matters, where the concept of "self" dissolves into the void, and where the only truth is the quiet, crushing weight of indifference.

Environment and Atmosphere

Visuals

  • Colour Palette: Faded greys, washed-out whites, and translucent blacks. Colours seem to drain from objects as you look at them, leaving everything monochromatic.
  • Lighting: The light is dim and directionless, casting no shadows. It feels like the light of a dying bulb, flickering without rhythm.
  • Terrain: Endless, flat plains of smooth, featureless stone.
  • Atmosphere: The air is still and heavy, as if holding its breath. There is no wind, no rustle of leaves, no hum of life.

Sensory Experience

  • Sound: Absolute silence.
  • Touch: Everything feels numb. Touching an object gives no sensation of texture or temperature. Pain is felt as a dull, distant throb, if at all.
  • Smell: Odorless. The air has no scent, no taste. Food, if eaten, has no flavour.
  • Thought: Thoughts are slippery and ephemeral. Trying to focus on an idea causes it to slip away like water through fingers. Memories fade within minutes of being formed.

The Laws of Physics (Local Variations)

The physics of the Silence are governed by Semantic Decay:

  1. Communication Failure: Language ceases to function. Spoken words are just noise; written words fade from the page instantly. Symbols lose their meaning. Concepts cannot be shared.
  2. Intent Erasure: Actions performed without a clear, immediate purpose lose their effect.
  3. Memory Dissipation: Short-term memory is severely impaired. Long-term memory is inaccessible. Travellers forget why they entered the plane, who they are, and even their own names within hours.
  4. Causal Disconnect: Cause and effect are weakened. Pushing a rock might not move it if the "intent" to push is not strong enough. Events happen without apparent reason.

Inhabitants

Life in the Silence is a struggle to maintain a sense of self against the encroaching void.

The Hollows

  • Description: Pale, gaunt humanoids with blank, expressionless faces. Their eyes are milky white, seeing nothing and everything. They move with a jerky, mechanical gait (see Hollows).
  • Physiology: They do not speak, eat, or sleep in the traditional sense.
  • Culture: Non-existent. There is no society, no hierarchy, no shared goals. Each Hollow is an island of consciousness, slowly dissolving into the background.
  • Behaviour: They are passive and indifferent. They do not attack unless provoked, but they do not defend themselves either. They simply are, waiting to fade away.

The Unspoken

  • Description: Beings that have lost their names and identities. They are shadows of their former selves, wandering aimlessly (see Unspoken).

Resources and Hazards

Resources

  • Anchors: Objects or rituals that help maintain a sense of self (e.g., a personal item, a mantra, a portrait). These are invaluable.
  • Clarity: Moments of lucidity, where a traveller remembers who they are, are rare and precious.
  • Silent Artefacts: Items that function without the need for meaning or intent (e.g., a lever, a millwheel, a falling weight).

Hazards

  • The Fade: The primary danger. Travellers slowly lose their memories, their personality, and finally their will to live. They become Hollows.
  • The Void: A psychological state where the traveller accepts the meaninglessness of existence and simply stops moving, eventually dissolving into the plane.
  • Miscommunication: The inability to communicate leads to confusion, panic, and isolation.
  • Intent Failure: Actions that rely on intent (magic, complex tools) may fail catastrophically.

Material Plane tales of the Silence come from abandoned libraries and dead ruins: the scholar found sitting at a blank page with nothing behind his eyes, the hermit who went seeking the Final Quiet and was found by kin who could not make him know them. Ruin-delvers fear a ruin where no echo answers.

Connection to the Veil and Other Planes

  • The Veil: The Veil in the Silence is a void of white noise.
  • Connections:

Role in the Cosmology

The Silence serves as the graveyard of meaning.

  • It represents erosion: the fate of forgotten things that fall into it.
  • It is a counterbalance to the Binding Song (Language/Connection). Where the Song binds the universe together, the Silence unravels it.
  • Among the Primes, Verba Prime and Umbra Prime are the currents that run out here: meaning unravels and endings settle, making the plane a sink for the universe's discarded thoughts and forgotten histories.
