The Echoing Dark
The face of the Unformed that takes away definition: a smudge where the eye will not focus and a name sounds like a foreign word. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
The Echoing Dark is the face of the Unformed, the substrate the Primes differentiated from, against definition. It is neither a foreign invader like the Beyonders nor a fallen Steward like the Cast-Outs.
It is the absence of definition: the place where a thought has not yet been thought, a word not yet spoken, a shape not yet drawn. It is not darkness as the absence of light but the absence of the concept of light, and not silence but the absence of the concept of sound.
It is called "Echoing" because it carries the memory of the time before naming, and what it touches drifts back towards that time. The "This" becomes "Not-This"; the "Name" becomes "No-Name."
Appearance and Manifestation
Form would need a definition, so it has none; what appears is a negation of perception.
The Visual
- Visuals: Not a black void but a smudge: a patch where the eye will not focus, colours run to grey and edges give way.
- Scale: Anything from a smear on a wall to a whole city gone soft, like a watercolour left in the rain.
The Sound
- Sound: It takes sound away. A scream stops mid-breath; a song thins to a hum that is not there; your own pulse grows faint, as if "pulse" were being forgotten.
- The Echo: Its one sound is the faint reverberation of a word that was never spoken.
The Feeling
- Touch: Numbness, not of cold but of non-existence: the memory of a touch rather than the touch.
- Thought: Your name sounds like a foreign word. Your face, when you try to picture it, is a blur.
Nature and Motivation
The Nature of the Unformed
Like every face of the Unformed, the Dark bears no malice. It is the canvas the world is painted on, and paint does not hold on it.
The Motivation: The Great Unnaming
It is driven to take the name away. A tree goes back to green-ness and wood-ness with no "tree"; a person to flesh and breath with no "self"; a lord's command to bare sound with no "order."
Abilities and Powers
The Unnaming
It strips the name from an object, concept, or being.
- Effect: A sword becomes "sharp-metal" and cannot cut; a king becomes "man-of-power" and cannot rule; a god becomes "energy."
- Cost: The victim lives on undefined, unable to act in the world in any way that means something.
The Blur Field
Its field breaks definitions down. Up and down, hot and cold, cause and effect come loose from each other: a person walks forward and ends up behind, a fire freezes water.
- Transmission: The Blur spreads as every Unformed field does, through the minds of those inside it as much as through air and water.
The Memory of Potential
It can erase the memory that a thing existed.
- Effect: A building is not destroyed but forgotten, with no record left that it stood. A person is not killed but unremembered by family and friends, then by the world.
- Effect: The forgotten stay aware of their own erasure and cannot stop it.
The Primordial Tide
At full strength it would wash the names off everything at once: off the Primes, the Material Plane, and the Boundary.
The Threat to the Cosmos
What the Dark ends is meaning, not matter.
- To Verba Prime: It is the silence that swallows the Binding Song, the un-naming beneath every name.
- To Lux Prime: It is the blur that leaves the Shifting Path no branch shaped enough to take.
- To the Material Plane: Places it touches cannot say what they are. A village forgets it is a village; a lord loses the word that made his men kneel.
The Cascade Failure
Its gravest harm is to erase the definitions of "Inside" and "Outside" (see the cascade failure).
Relationships
With the Primes
The Dark and the Primes are kin: the Dark is the part of the shared substrate that never took a name, the Primes' shadow. Each Prime stands to it according to how much of its own domain the Dark would undo.
- Verba Prime: The Dark is the silence before the first word, Verba's own domain before it was spoken.
- Lux Prime: The Dark is the blur that precedes the first light. Where it spreads, Lux has nothing defined to illuminate, and its light scatters into glare.
- Umbra Prime: The Dark sits nearest to Umbra of all.
- Memoria Prime: The Dark is the forgetting before anything was remembered. What it un-names drops out of the record, and Memoria cannot keep what no one knows was there.
- Terra Prime: Loses the words its domain rests on; see its page.
- Zephyr Prime: Its un-naming reaches even direction, a word Zephyr's motion depends on.
With the Beyonders
The Beyonders keep their distance, as they do from all the Unformed; an alien order is still an order, and the Dark would leave it without a name.
With the Cast-Outs
The Cast-Outs dread it (see the overview). Each is defined by one fixed concept, and the Dark would take even that word away.
Encounters and Legends
The City of Unnames
A city grieving a plague year welcomed the Dark when it drifted over, taking the numbness for relief from the names of its dead. Its buildings became "structures," its people "beings," its oaths "words." When the Dark moved on, the city still stood, but nobody in it could say what it was.
The King's Unname
A king weighed down by his crown felt the weight grow vague under the Dark and did not resist. He became "man," the crown "metal," the kingdom "land." He lived, and could no longer rule anything.
The Blunted Company
A sellsword company hired to clear outlaws from a valley followed them into the Blur. Inside, every sword became "sharp-metal" and would not cut, and soon neither side could say which men were the enemy. They stood in the grey together for days. A drover's boy who had come after his brother walked the edge shouting the company's name, and led them out one at a time. The songs call him the boy who named the company back; the outlaws he led out too, and they went back to robbing the valley road.
The Last Echo
The few who came back from the Blur speak of a faint echo at its centre, and some take it for the first word ever spoken.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
The Power of Definition
The Dark cannot take hold of someone who names themselves and means it.
- Strategy: Accept that the name, the shape and the self are real, even when the blur makes letting go feel easier.
The Power of Naming
Every name spoken with conviction, every line drawn on purpose, pushes the blur back a little.
- Strategy: Name things aloud: people, places, the road underfoot. The self lies in its definition, not in what it might have been.
The Power of the Primes
Against it the Primes amplify the Resonance of Definition: Verba Prime in language and names, Lux Prime in light and shape, Umbra Prime in trace and remnant.
Role in the Cosmology
The Echoing Dark is the ghost of the unspoken: proof that a thing lasts only as long as it can be named.
