The Hollow Chorus
The face of the Unformed that takes away the singer, so that voices come from the air beside their speakers; an "I" said and meant breaks it. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
Against the speaker, the Unformed shows the face of the Hollow Chorus: the absence of the singer, sound from before any voice belonged to anyone.
It dates from before the first word came from one particular throat, when sound was raw vibration with no source. It is not silence; it is noise with no one making it, the state in which speaker, listener and message are still one. Where it sounds, the "I" that speaks thins into the "It" that sounds.
It is "Hollow" because its sound comes from nowhere and goes nowhere, and a "Chorus" because it is countless voices in perfect unison, none of them anyone's.
Appearance and Manifestation
Having no mouth to speak from, it has no form either; it arrives as a dissolution of the speaker.
The Visual
- Visuals: A person's lips move and no sound comes, or the sound comes from their hands or the air beside them.
- Scale: A room where every voice seems to come from the walls, or a city become one instrument that nobody plays.
The Sound
- Sound: Whisper, shout, song and scream folded into one harmonic drone. It is not loud, but it hums in the teeth and the marrow and cannot be shut out.
- The Echo: A single chord that never resolves and never stops.
The Feeling
- Touch: A tuning fork pressed to the skull; you cannot tell where the sound ends and your body begins.
- Thought: Your name sounds like something overheard. Your own voice sounds like a stranger's, and "my thought" and "your thought" hum together.
Nature and Motivation
The Nature of the Unformed
It has no quarrel with separate voices; like all the Unformed, it is only what remains when the separation gives way.
The Motivation: The Great Unison
It is drawn to take away the singer: to leave the poem without a poet, the love-song without a lover, the act of making without a maker's will. Some mystics praise this as release from the self; the Chorus praises nothing, being sound with no one to mean it.
Abilities and Powers
The Unbinding of Voice
It cuts the link between a being and their voice.
- Effect: A person speaks and the words come from the ground or the sky; they can no longer claim them.
- Cost: The victim becomes a mouthpiece, hearing words in their own voice that are not theirs.
The Resonance Field
In its field a crowd speaks and one voice is heard; a thousand people think and one thought is known. A listener hears their own thoughts as someone else's.
- Transmission: The Resonance carries in every vibration inside it, bone and breath included, as Unformed fields do.
- Its victims: Bird flocks singing with one voice that comes from none of them, the Hollow Flocks, carry the field farther than anything else it takes.
The Song of the Unowned
It can make a being the instrument rather than the player.
- Effect: Body and mind become the music; the Chorus plays the notes.
- Effect: The played one hears the whole song and cannot stop it.
The Harmonic Tide
At full strength it would gather every voice into one at once, those of the Primes included, until nothing anywhere spoke alone.
The Threat to the Cosmos
It ends the speaker, not the speech.
- To Verba Prime: It is sound that swallows the Binding Song's words, leaving voice without anyone saying anything.
- To Lux Prime: It is the hum with no source, where the Shifting Path cannot show which way anyone is going.
- To the Material Plane: An assembly touched by it speaks in one voice that no member chose, and no one can tell afterwards who agreed to what.
The Cascade Failure
At the Boundary it merges the voice of "Inside" with the silence of "Outside" (see the cascade failure).
Relationships
With the Primes
The Hollow Chorus is a remnant of the substrate the Primes rose from, from the time before voices were separate. That makes it kin to the Primes and their shadow at once: potential that never became a principle, or a singer.
- Verba Prime: The Chorus is the babble before the first word was spoken: sound without a speaker, which Verba cannot give meaning to.
- Lux Prime: The Chorus is the sound that has no source, the light that has no origin. Lux reveals by showing where a thing stands, and the Chorus stands nowhere.
- Umbra Prime: The Chorus is the echo that has no wall, the memory that has no mind. It brushes against Umbra's traces without leaving any of its own.
With the Beyonders
The Beyonders are wary of it; a Beyonder's alien voice would be one more note in the drone.
With the Cast-Outs
A Cast-Out insists on its single creed, and the Chorus would sing that creed with no one left to hold it (see the overview).
With Other Unformed
Beside the Echoing Dark, the Chorus is the other half of a silencing: the Dark takes the word, the Chorus the one who says it. The Fractured Mirror runs the opposite way, giving one person a thousand voices where the Chorus gives a thousand people one; both leave no single self speaking.
Encounters and Legends
The City of One Voice
A city tired of quarrels heard the Chorus humming through its streets and sang along, hoping for harmony. Soon every citizen spoke, and only one voice came out. When the Chorus moved on, the city was left humming a single note, warm and breathing, with no one in it able to say "I."
The Poet's Song
A poet weary of authorship let his voice fall into the Chorus's seamless hum. He went on speaking, and the poems were no longer his. He could hear every word and own none of them.
The Lost War-Cry
Two warbands met at a ford where a Hollow Flock had been singing all morning. Both raised their war-cry, and one cry rose from the river between them, from neither side and from both. No man could tell whose shout it was, or which line he stood in. They lowered their spears and went home, and the feud between their houses ended there, because nobody could say any longer who had sworn it. Fowlers along that river still net any flock that sings with one voice and wring its neck.
The Last Note
Voices called back out of the Resonance tell of one pure note still sounding inside it; to the mystics who hear their accounts, it is the first ever sung by a single voice.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
The Power of the Self
It cannot take the voice of someone who keeps speaking as "I."
- Strategy: Claim your words, including the lonely ones, and say them as your own.
The Power of Dissonance
A note that clashes, a voice that cracks, a word said with hesitation: every unmatched sound breaks the unison.
- Strategy: Sing out of tune on purpose. Disagree aloud.
The Power of the Primes
Resisting it, the Primes reinforce the Resonance of the Self: Verba Prime in names and ownership, Lux Prime in the source and the origin, Umbra Prime in the trace each self leaves.
Role in the Cosmology
The Hollow Chorus is the ghost of the unowned: the reminder that a voice matters because someone in particular is using it.
