Qzoth
Also: Qzoth, the Becoming
The Becoming, a Beyonder from the Protean Abyss that changes things without reason, direction, or end; it arrives as the Bloom, a writhing tower of flesh. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
Qzoth comes from the Protean Abyss, a cosmology where form is a lie. Nothing there is fixed: cells divide without limit, shapes shift without reason, and beings are avalanches of changing flesh. "What a thing is" has been replaced by "what it is turning into."
Qzoth is not noble transformation. Where the Crucible works with purpose, ore into steel and seed into tree, Qzoth changes things without reason, direction, or end. It wants to proliferate, and it sees bodies, species, and natural law as stale prisons to be broken open so the raw potential inside can spill out. It is the body turned against itself: the tumour, the birth defect, the cell that forgot what it was meant to become and decided to become everything.
Appearance and Manifestation
Qzoth is change itself, become conscious. It arrives as The Bloom.
The Avatar
- Visuals: A writhing tower of flesh, bone, chitin, scale, feather, and substances with no name.
- Scale: A single pulsing cyst, or a landscape carpeted in screaming biomass. Every fragment is Qzoth, and every fragment is still changing.
- Sound: Cracking bone, slapping flesh, fluid gurgling through malformed organs, and under it a thousand hearts beating out of step.
The Incursion
Wherever Qzoth touches reality, Form and Stability come undone:
- The Bloom: A tree sprouts eyes, teeth, and feathers before slumping into a puddle of raw, unshaped flesh; a person grows limbs or a second face while their organs rearrange, still conscious.
- The Proliferation: One fleck of mould becomes a colony, a creature, an ecosystem in minutes. The ground itself turns warm and fleshy.
- The Loss of Kind: A wolf births something half bird and half insect, and some such births live on as Kindless Broods; a river becomes a circulatory system.
Nature and Motivation
The Philosophy of the Final Formlessness
Qzoth reasons from radical potential.
- The Flaw: Every cell that divides into the same kind of cell is a possibility murdered.
- The Solution: Realize all potential at once. The result is not chaos; it is totality.
- The Goal: An infinite biomass in which every particle is every possible form at once.
The Incompatibility
The Resonance Principle needs stable forms to interact, and Qzoth removes the stability (see what every Incursion shares). A spell meets laws that mutate mid-cast and turns into something else or explodes; a body whose cells each follow their own evolution tears itself apart; neurons turn to muscle and bone, and the mind splinters into competing impulses.
Abilities and Powers
The Great Mutation
Qzoth forces any living matter into random metamorphosis, drawn from the organism's latent potential and past it. A battlefield becomes a mass of chimeric soldiers with no sides left, only surfaces; a wall becomes a membrane, a weapon a limb, a prisoner a monster.
The Spore Cloud
Its protean spores infect on contact. A rash, a fever, an extra joint; within hours the infected is unrecognizable, and within days may no longer be one organism. Wind, water, and the infected themselves carry the spores, and no ordinary filter stops them.
The Flesh-Hosts
Its hosts, the Flesh-Hosts, are kaleidoscopes of biology: a tower of arms and mouths, a puddle of thinking protoplasm, or something almost the old person except for translucent skin over shifting organs. Their one drive is grow, and pain is only data for the next change. On a battlefield one would take in the dead and the wounded alike and come on with the swallowed soldiers' swords jutting from it like bones.
Reality Cancer
At full strength Qzoth infects natural law. Constants become variables, the speed of light wavers, gravity reverses, and the rules differ from moment to moment.
The Threat to the Cosmos
Qzoth is the antithesis of the Primes of Form and Stability.
- Terra Prime (Structure) is opposed by Qzoth's Dissolution.
- Aqua Prime (Flow/Pattern) is opposed by Qzoth's Torrent.
- Verba Prime (Definition) is opposed by Qzoth's Indeterminacy.
- Umbra Prime (Remnant) is opposed by Qzoth's Overgrowth.
Its victory is a cosmic tumour: one writhing, ever-growing mass in which the Primes' domains are digested and recombined.
The Horror of the Familiar
Qzoth does not replace life with something alien; it corrupts life from inside. A mother may find her child's eyes in a chimeric beast, still blinking, still pleading from a body that is no longer the child's.
The Cascade Failure
The Boundary was made to hold a finite cosmos. Qzoth's growth stretches it by sheer mass until it tears, and then the Bloom feeds on the Nothing itself and spreads towards other cosmologies.
Inhabitants and Followers
The Flesh-Hosts
- Description: Unstable chimeras, some with shreds of their old personality, some pure appetite.
- Behaviour: They take in living matter.
The Cult of the Thousand Thousand
No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.
- Description: Mortals who think the body a prison and mutation a release.
- Beliefs: They would practise scarification, amputation, and grafting as steps towards the endless change they take for the truth of the flesh, and count stable form as cowardice.
- Decline Trigger: Most would dissolve into the Bloom; a few would go on as Flesh-Hosts, never finished.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
Qzoth's weakness is Stability.
The Power of Form
A perfectly ordered structure resists it: a crystal lattice, a mathematical proof, a conviction held without doubt.
- Strategy: Hold your shape. Know who you are and what you refuse to become; a wavering self invites mutation.
- Artefacts: A flawless diamond, a finely made timepiece, or a written oath makes a pocket the Bloom cannot enter.
The Resonance of the Primes
- Terra Prime can steady matter against mutation.
- Verba Prime can anchor identity through names and definitions.
- Ignis Prime can cauterize the Bloom.
- The Frozen Moment can stop the dividing cells outright.
The Boundary
The Bloom must be burned back before its mass stretches the Boundary thin; only then can the Primes drive Qzoth out through it (the Primes' intervention).
Role in the Cosmology
Qzoth is the danger of change without purpose, and a reminder that identity needs limits.
