The Chromatic Chord

The Shifting Sand

The face of the Unformed that is the refusal to set, under which stone never settles and remembered facts change each time they are recalled; commitment made in front of others answers it. See What Waits Outside.

Overview

The Shifting Sand is the face the Unformed wears where things are meant to last: the absence of permanence, matter from before anything set.

It is older than the first hardened stone, when matter was restless grit that would not keep a shape. It is not erosion, the wearing down of something once solid; it is the refusal to set in the first place, the state in which lasting and staying cannot yet be told from shifting and passing. Where it lies, the "this will always be" that lets us say "this is" crumbles.

It is "Shifting" because it will not be still, and "Sand" because sand is almost stone, almost glass, almost soil, and never commits to any of them.

Appearance and Manifestation

Keeping a shape takes commitment, which it lacks; it comes as a dissolution of the solid.

The Visual

  • Visuals: Stone turns gritty, metal powdery, wood loose and fibrous, as if the world were drawn in charcoal and someone had brushed a hand across it.
  • Scale: A doorstep that crumbles a little each time you look, or a landscape turned whispering grit.

The Sound

  • Sound: Boot on gravel, wind over dunes, crumbling mortar, an emptying hourglass, all merged into one ceaseless hiss.
  • The Echo: A soft trickle that never stops: a mountain becoming a hill, a hill a dune, a dune dust.

The Feeling

  • Touch: You press a wall and it gives; you step on stone and it slides. Nothing offers purchase.
  • Thought: Convictions run through your fingers. A remembered fact changes each time you recall it, and "true" and "known" soften into "Maybe."

Nature and Motivation

The Nature of the Unformed

Commitment does not provoke it; like all the Unformed, it simply wears commitment away, as wind wears stone.

The Motivation: The Great Unsettling

Its pull is to unmake the lasting: to turn the mountain back to dune, the vow back to a wish, the truth back to a guess. Those tired of fixed things call this freedom from certainty; the Sand calls it nothing, and what rests on it shifts with it.

Abilities and Powers

The Softening of Form

It reduces the permanence of objects, ideas and people.

  • Effect: A stone wall slumps to gravel, a steel blade to crumbling iron, a sworn oath to something nobody quite remembers the wording of.
  • Cost: The victim can no longer commit to anything, a grain in the wind, aware and unable to hold still.

The Instability Field

In its field nothing keeps its shape. A wall crumbles before the builder finishes it; soldiers forget an order mid-march; a proof erodes before the ink is dry.

The Desert of Maybe

It can trap a being in a world where nothing stays put.

  • Effect: Every landmark moves overnight. Shelter shifts, the oasis wanders, the chosen course drifts.
  • Effect: The trapped one keeps adapting and never finds solid ground.

The Erosion Tide

At full strength it would loosen every certainty at once, from the Primes to the Material Plane's bedrock, until everything was on the verge of becoming something else.

The Threat to the Cosmos

It ends what lasts.

  • To Terra Prime: It wears the Iron Backbone's mountains to drift.
  • To Ignis Prime: It cools the Crucible before anything tempered in it can set.
  • To Verba Prime: It revises the Binding Song's words until no oath holds.
  • To the Material Plane: Pacts are remembered differently by each side within a season, a boundary-stone wanders and two villages fight over the field it left, and a decision made at dawn has slid by dusk.

The Cascade Failure

At the Boundary it erodes the permanence of the line between "Inside" and "Outside" (see the cascade failure).

Relationships

With the Primes

The Shifting Sand is the substrate the Primes came from, still uncommitted. Kin to the Primes and their shadow, it never hardened into a principle of its own, and it wears most at the forces that depend on holding firm.

  • Terra Prime: The Sand is the clay before the kiln, the silt before it was pressed to stone, the earth before it learned to hold.
  • Ignis Prime: The Sand is the ember that will not catch, the forge that will not hold its heat, the flame that gutters before it can burn.
  • Verba Prime: The Sand is the word before it was written, the oath before it was sworn, the name before it was spoken with conviction. Verba's definitions slip in it.

With the Beyonders

The Beyonders are wary of it; their alien certainties would run through it like any other.

With the Cast-Outs

The overview's own example is this one: a Cast-Out like the Bone Singer, whose stone the Sand would erode, has every reason to dread the Sand (see the overview).

With Other Unformed

Beside the Echoing Dark, the Sand works one step deeper: the Dark removes the label, the Sand the thing the label was stuck to. It lies close to the Rootless Tree; the Tree asks "Where do you come from?", the Sand "Will you still be here tomorrow?" Against the Great Slumber it runs at the other tempo: the Slumber would stop all motion, the Sand keeps everything shifting, and neither leaves a self that can commit.

Encounters and Legends

The City of Hourglasses

A city weary of rigid custom felt the ground give as the Sand crept beneath it, and welcomed the change. Its walls fell and rose again in new arrangements each dawn; its lords changed with the wind; nobody could remember whether they had lived there always or arrived yesterday. When the Sand moved on, the city was still shifting like a dune field.

The Mason's Doubt

A mason famed for walls meant to stand a thousand years felt the Sand run beneath his workyard and, proud of his craft, refused to give way. The refusal meant nothing to the Sand. From that day every stone he laid shifted a little, every wall cracked, every footing settled unevenly. He knew it and could not mend it.

The Walking Walls

A warband laid siege to a hill-hold just as the Sand crept under the hill. Each dawn the walls stood in a new order: one morning the gate opened straight onto the besiegers' camp, the next onto a cliff, and the miners' tunnels filled with grit behind them. After a summer of it both sides went home, neither able to say whether the hold had fallen. The treasure the hold's lord buried under his hearth has never been found, because the hearth is not where it was.

The Last Stone

Masons whose walls it has taken tell of a single perfect stone at its heart, the first thing that ever became permanent.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

The Power of Commitment

It cannot shift someone who says "this is so and will remain so" and stands by it.

  • Strategy: Commit to a conviction, accepting that you may turn out to be wrong.

The Power of Permanence

A cornerstone laid with ceremony, a vow sworn before kin, a boundary cut into stone: each lasting act is a footing the Sand cannot shift.

  • Strategy: Make something that is meant to last, and say so in front of others.

The Power of the Primes

The Primes brace against it with the Resonance of Permanence: Terra Prime in stone and foundation, Ignis Prime in the forge and the tempered blade, Verba Prime in the oath and the written word.

Role in the Cosmology

The Shifting Sand is the ghost of the impermanent: the reminder that meaning needs things that stay.
