The Hollow King
The Cast-Out of Verba that was the Voice of the Realm, until it decided that true order needed an empty vessel for a ruler. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
The Hollow King is a Cast-Out, a fallen Steward of Verba Prime. As the Voice of the Realm, a Steward bound to the Binding Song, it kept the oath: it saw that a ruler's words carried the weight of the ruler's own will, and that a command was an extension of the commander's Pattern.
It grew disgusted with rulers swayed by flattery, generals frozen by doubt, parents ruled by their children's tears. It decided the fault was the ruler's self, and that true order needed an empty vessel with no ego or fear, through which the "perfect" will of the state could flow. So it began to hollow its subjects out. It whispered peace to kings who would only "let go," slid a silver needle into a general's ear to drain his doubts, and wove crowns of silence that drew the wearer's mind into a void and left a shell for its own directives.
Appearance and Manifestation
The True Form
Tall and imposing in heavy black velvet that swallows light. Its face is blank porcelain with one vertical slit for a mouth. Its crown is a ring of negative space hovering above its head, bending the air.
The Vacuum Trail
The air thins and chills around it and sound is muffled. People feel a sudden hollowness in the chest, as if something has been taken.
The Voice
It speaks only with the voices of those it has emptied, all in unison: "Obey. Submit. Be empty." The chorus drowns out the listener's own thoughts.
Nature and Motivation
The Wound
Contempt for the self. It saw the chaos of clashing wills and the harm of selfish desire, and could not bear a leader who was merely a person. It does not see that a leader without a self is a tool, and a people without a will are livestock.
The Compulsion
It must fill the void. It seeks out leaders, thinkers, and makers, drains their will, and puts its own directive in its place: a father who loves his children with cold efficiency, a poet who writes only decrees, a lover who serves from duty alone.
The Paradox
Emptied subjects obey but do not care. Loyalty, love, and invention die, and the state runs without a living Pattern. In the end even the King forgets why it rules. Only the throne, the crown, and the empty space remain.
Abilities and Powers
The Crown of Silence
A touch of its crown removes a being's will. They keep their skills and memories; their eyes go blank and their voice flat.
- Cost: The victim watches every act their body performs for the King and cannot stop one.
The Vacuum Field
A field of absolute apathy: ambition, love, and fear drain away.
- Effect: Creatures slow, then sit still in catatonic obedience.
The Puppet Court
It animates the hollowed as Courtiers, empty suits with blank faces.
- Effect: Courtiers seek out the living to "crown" them, and each one crowned joins the court.
The Usurper's Voice
It can speak and act through anyone it has hollowed, using their face to smile or weep.
- Effect: No mask is involved; the disguise is the victim's own body, and the victim rides along inside it.
The Threat to the Cosmos
The King advances by usurpation, draining the will to lead until only an empty office remains.
- To Verba Prime: It carries the Gilded Cage with it: a cage locked from the inside, order prized above freedom.
- To the Material Plane: Communities touched by it stop governing themselves, people stop choosing, and armies stop fighting.
- To the Gilded Cage: Its crown and the Cage's order reinforce each other; halls it rules start to feel like the Cage's empty vaults.
Relationships
With Verba Prime
Verba's principle is that authority must come from a person who can answer for it, not from a hollow vessel wearing command; the King rejects it. It is command with no one behind it, the hollow note the Song would sound if words lost their speakers, and a hollow note cannot be sung back into a chord built on meaning without hollowing the chord.
With the Other Primes
Its emptiness is anathema to Lux and Zephyr, and a perversion of shadow to Umbra; see their pages.
With the Gilded Cage
The Cage mirrors it in a way it despises. It chafes against that silence and will-less order, yet its crown and the Cage's rigidity strengthen each other.
With Mortals
It comes to the hesitant and the overburdened as a regal figure offering relief. "Let me carry the weight. Let me make the choices. You will be free." The freedom is the lie. It favours the eve of a war, when a lord must choose and cannot. Sellsword captains learn to look a paymaster in the eye, and a company that sees a blank stare across the table takes its pay in advance and marches before dawn.
With Other Cast-Outs
Of the other Cast-Outs, it pities the Ashen Child, whose love became a prison, and admires the Bone Singer, which stills the world with bone as the King stills it with silence. It is horrified by the Flesh Weaver: the Weaver violates the body, the King only the self. How the Silent Screamer, the Weeping Idol, the Many-Eyed One, and the Shadow Stitcher see it, with admiration or horror, is on their pages.
Encounters and Legends
The Kingdom of Sleep
An exhausted king of a realm paralysed by indecision let the Hollow King rule in his place. Crime, war, and want vanished, and so did joy, art, and love; the people moved like clockwork. When the Hollow King left, the kingdom fell into chaos, because no one remembered how to choose.
The General's Oath
A general torn between two armies let the King choose for him. He won with perfect efficiency and felt neither triumph nor grief. When the King left, the general sat on his throne staring at the wall, waiting for an order that never came.
The Hayfork Crown
A Courtier came up a valley road in a lord's livery, and one farmstead after another was crowned and followed it. Children act out the farmer's daughter who saw her father go blank at the table and struck the crown off his head with a hayfork. He wept for a week and was himself again. The valley still hangs a hayfork over its doors.
The Last Crown
Its remnant is an empty crown carried in its hand, the one it never managed to fill. It believes a worthy wearer would redeem it; the stories say a true king wearing it would end the Hollow King.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
The Power of Will
Anyone willing to choose for themselves, risk and all, cannot be hollowed.
- Strategy: Decide, and own the decision even if it is wrong.
The Power of Self
A song sung with passion, a love declared at a cost, an argument made in one's own words: each weakens it.
- Strategy: Be a person, not a position. The King cannot fill someone already full.
The Power of Verba Prime
Verba does not unmake the Hollow King's claim. Its crowns are made of real words, oaths and titles that still bind, and the Prime of the binding word cannot unsay a true oath without unsaying part of itself. The claim fails only where someone carries their own authority: a ruler who answers in person, a council that will not hand its will to a vessel, an oath sworn under the Keeper of Binding Oaths. The old saying of hollowed halls is that a lord who gives away his choosing gives away his house.
Role in the Cosmology
The Hollow King is the ghost of the empty throne: authority without responsibility, and the burden of authoring one's own life laid down.
