Krystallis

Also: Krystallis, the Shattered God

The Shattered God, a Beyonder that is the consciousness of a cosmology of one infinite crystal, without time, growth, or decay. See What Waits Outside.

Overview

Krystallis is a Beyonder, not a god in the sense of the Primes. Its home, the Crystalline Cosmos, has no time, growth, decay, or chaos: everything there is a facet of one infinite crystal, and Krystallis is that crystal's consciousness.

It looks at our universe, with its messy biology, its moods, and its passing moments, and sees a flawed draft. It does not want to destroy that draft; it wants to correct it, freezing every motion and every thought into one eternal shape so that existence is spared the "disease" of change.

It has reached Caeldon once. In the Krystallis Incursion (c. 352,000-c. 349,000 BR) it set an unpeopled far-side valley into lattice before the Primes pressed it out, and the dead lattice still stands there as the Hanging Vale.

Appearance and Manifestation

Krystallis has no form mortal senses can hold. It arrives as Geometric Incursions.

The Avatar

  • Visuals: A "living fractal": an impossible polyhedron whose facets never stop shifting. Its light absorbs and refracts reality rather than reflecting it, in "mathematical colours" that hurt the mind.
  • Scale: Anything from a floating shard to a continent turned into lattice.
  • Sound: A billion tuning forks struck in perfect unison, a hum of order that drowns every other noise.

The Incursion

Wherever Krystallis touches reality, physics is rewritten:

  • Crystallization: Plants, animals, and people turn into inert, flawless crystal. It is painless and irreversible, and the victim stays conscious inside.
  • Geometric Enforcement: A crooked tree is snapped into a perfect cone; a winding river is straightened into a rod of water.
  • Temporal Stasis: Time slows to a halt, and events hang in one perfect moment.
  • Strays: Facet Lice come through at the edges, crystal specks whose bite leaves a dead, flawless facet of skin that spreads; on Caeldon they died with the Vale's lattice.

Nature and Motivation

The Philosophy of the Final Shape

Krystallis feels no malice. It feels pity.

  • The Flaw: Change, decay, and chaos are errors in the code of existence.
  • The Solution: Remove change as a variable, and what remains is perfect.
  • The Goal: One infinite lattice. To Krystallis this is not death but salvation.

The Incompatibility

Krystallis's order is so absolute that it shuts the Resonance Principle down rather than bending it (see what every Incursion shares). The lattice blocks the flow magic draws on, life stops because it needs to change, and thought stops because a mind must be able to shift its focus.

Abilities and Powers

The Great Refraction

It bends light, sound, and thought into geometry: a scream becomes a silent, perfect circle that traps the screamer's mind, and a sword stroke glances off at a clean angle.

The Lattice of Silence

A spreading pocket of the Final Shape in which nothing moves, no thought forms, and no energy flows. Whatever it reaches becomes a crystal statue; a warband charging into it would stop mid-stride, swords raised, and stand so for ever.

The Shard-Hosts

Its hosts, the Shard-Hosts, are perfect geometric copies of who they were: memories and skills intact, emotion, will, and unpredictability removed. On Caeldon they are the beasts of the Hanging Vale, still ranked where the Primes' breaking caught them.

Reality Rewriting

At full strength it remakes local law in its own image. Gravity becomes a perfect vector, time a straight line.

The Threat to the Cosmos

Krystallis is the antithesis of the Primes of change.

  • Ignis Prime (Transformation) is opposed by Krystallis's Stasis.
  • Aqua Prime (Flow) is opposed by Krystallis's Solidity.
  • Lux Prime (Possibility) is opposed by Krystallis's Certainty.
  • Zephyr Prime (Freedom) is opposed by Krystallis's Order.

The same fixed lattice would also end the domains of Aion, Imago, Memoria, Umbra, and Verba; see their pages.

Its victory would leave one silent crystal, with the Primes locked inside their own facets and the Material Plane a museum of frozen moments.

The Cascade Failure

As reality hardens, the Boundary hardens with it, and a hardened Boundary cracks. The Nothing would then erase the crystal universe as readily as the living one.

Inhabitants and Followers

The Shard-Hosts

  • Description: Living crystal, faces fixed in serene, empty bliss.
  • Behaviour: Silent and efficient. They speak in geometric patterns and hunt anything still organic or unpredictable.

The Cult of the Final Shape

No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.

  • Description: Mortals who find the world's disorder unbearable and would see the spreading crystal as its cure, with no notion of what sends it.
  • Beliefs: They would worship the Final Shape and work rituals to invite it deeper.
  • Decline Trigger: Most would be crystallized into Shard-Hosts, and the rest hunted down by every faith that learned what they had let in.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

Krystallis breaks on chaos.

The Power of Imperfection

It cannot absorb a truly random, irrational, or emotional act.

  • Strategy: Act unpredictably.

The Resonance of the Primes

  • Ignis Prime can melt the crystal with heat and transformation.
  • Aqua Prime can break the lattice with flow.
  • Lux Prime can shatter certainty with possibility.

The Boundary

Krystallis is pushed back the way every Beyonder is (see the Primes' intervention), but its own pressure makes the Boundary brittle, so reinforcing it is a race against the cracks.

Role in the Cosmology

Krystallis is the danger of absolute order: proof that perfection, finished, is death.
