Aion Prime
Also: Aion, Aion Prime, the Eternal Now
The Prime of time, not as a clock counts it but as the river of becoming; its Harmonic is the Frozen Moment. See The Ten Primes.
Overview
Aion Prime is the embodiment of Time itself in its raw, unfiltered state. While other Primes govern matter, energy, or concepts, Aion governs the dimension in which all change occurs. Aion is not "time" as a clock measures it (seconds, minutes, years); Aion is the river of becoming. It is the force that allows a seed to become a tree, a thought to become a memory, and a star to ignite and die.
The few scholars who speculate about such a force often mistake it for a "keeper of the past" or an "architect of the future." In truth, Aion is the Eternal Now—the singular, moving point where the past dissolves and the future is born. Aion does not dwell in the past (which is memory) or the future (which is potential); Aion is the act of moving from one to the other.
Appearance and Manifestation
Aion has no fixed form, as form implies a static state, which contradicts the nature of time. However, where Aion's current condenses into an avatar before mortals or Primes, it appears as:
The Chronos-Weaver
- Visuals: A towering, androgynous figure draped in robes that seem to be made of shifting moments.
- The Hourglass Halo: Above Aion's head floats a massive, translucent hourglass.
- The Sound: Aion's presence carries the sound of many voices speaking at once—a child's giggle, a lover's whisper, an elder's cough, a king's decree—all woven into a single, resonant hum that vibrates in the chest.
The Temporal Distortion
When Aion is near, the environment reacts:
- Time Dilation: A flower might bloom and wither in seconds. A cup of broth might cool instantly, then steam again.
- Echoes: Ghostly images of the immediate past or probable future flicker at the edge of vision.
- The Tick: A deep, rhythmic sound, like a giant heartbeat, pulses through the air. It is the sound of the universe ticking forward.
Nature and Philosophy
The Philosophy of the Flow
Aion's principle is that change is the only constant.
- The Necessity of Loss: For something new to exist, something old must pass.
- The Sanctity of the Moment: Every moment is unique and irreplaceable.
- The Rejection of False Stasis: Aion governs duration, sequence, and even legitimate preservation, but opposes any attempt to sever stasis from the flow of consequence.
The Relationship with Mortals
Aion has no stake in individual suffering; its weight falls on the narrative arc of existence.
- No alignment with Aion lets a being "live forever" (which would be a curse of stasis).
- No alignment with Aion lets a being "go back and change the past" (which would unravel the continuum).
- Those who live fully in the Now, who accept the flow of life, and who understand that their mortality gives their actions meaning move with Aion's current rather than against it.
- Those who try to step out of the flow pay for it.
Powers and Abilities
The Flow of Ages
Aion can accelerate, decelerate, or reverse the flow of time within a localized area.
- Acceleration: Can age a weapon to rust in seconds, or a wound to heal instantly.
- Deceleration: Can slow a falling stone to a crawl, or a dying breath to a century-long sigh.
- Reversal: Can rewind a specific event (e.g., a shattered vase reassembling), but only if the cost is paid in "future time" (whoever wields it ages rapidly).
The Sight of the Continuum
Aion can see the thread of time for any being or object. It can see where they came from, where they are going, and the branching possibilities of their future.
- Warning: Looking directly at Aion's sight can drive mortals mad, as they see their own death and the deaths of everyone they love simultaneously.
The Anchor of the Now
Aion can freeze a moment in absolute stasis, creating a pocket of time where nothing changes. This is not a weapon, but a sanctuary or a prison.
- Usage: Used to contain dangerous entities (as in the Time Lock, a vault of dilated time) or to preserve a perfect moment (like a memory).
The River of Possibility
Aion can open temporal rifts, allowing travel to the past or future. However, this is rare and dangerous. Changing the past creates paradoxes that can tear the fabric of reality, and the flow usually closes such rifts as soon as they have been crossed.
Relationships with Other Primes
- Ignis Prime (Energy/Change): Close allies. Ignis supplies the heat of change; Aion gives that change the time to happen. Together, they drive the evolution of the universe.
- Terra Prime (Structure/Stability): Natural tension. Terra holds things in place; Aion moves them on. They balance each other: Terra provides the stage, Aion provides the play.
- Umbra Prime (Trace/Death): Deep kinship. Aion is the passing of each moment; Umbra keeps what the passing leaves behind. They are the two sides of the same coin.
- Lux Prime (Possibility/Future): Partners. Lux generates the future; Aion delivers it.
- Verba Prime (Language/Order): Collaborators. Verba names the moments; Aion orders them.
Relationships with Dark Entities
The Cast-Outs
- The Bone Singer: Aion's sharpest opposite.
- The Ashen Child: A tragic counter-current.
The Beyonders
- Krystallis: A universe locked in its crystal lattice would have no next moment. That is the ultimate stasis, and Aion's flow presses against it at every point.
- Mnemosyne Null: Seeks to erase memory (the past). Without the past, the present has no context, so Null cuts at the sequence Aion carries.
- Qzoth: Seeks uncontrolled mutation. Mutation belongs to change and Aion's flow carries it, but Qzoth's chaos threatens the unbroken thread of time itself.
The Unformed
- The Echoing Dark: Seeks to un-name time, making "before" and "after" meaningless. The sequence Aion carries is what it erodes.
- The Fractured Mirror: Seeks to shatter the singular timeline into infinite contradictions. Aion's flow holds the timeline's coherence against it.
- The Great Slumber: A direct threat. With all motion and will stilled, time itself would halt, and Aion's river is the motion the Slumber would end.
- The Silent Tide: Time without return would be a single linear pull, and the recurring rhythm Aion carries is what the Tide wears away.
Role in the Cosmology
Aion Prime serves as the clockwork of the universe.
- The Measure of Existence: Without Aion, there is no "duration." Events would happen all at once, or not at all.
- The Guardian of Causality: Aion ensures that cause precedes effect. Without Aion, the universe would be a chaotic jumble of unrelated events.
- The Harbinger of Change: Aion's passage shows all beings that nothing lasts forever. This is not a cruel truth, but a liberating one. It gives life urgency, meaning, and beauty.
Worship and Rituals
Aion is not worshipped, as Aion is not a god of mercy or wrath. Its customs honour the passing of time itself, and their keepers seldom name anything behind it. The gods of the turning year that farmers actually pray to are Resonants of Aion Prime.
- The Ritual of the Passing: Ceremonies that mark the end of things (funerals, harvests, the closing of a chapter). These rituals acknowledge the necessity of loss.
- The Hourglass Offering: Leaving an hourglass in a sacred place, letting the sand run out, and then flipping it to start again. This symbolizes the cycle of life and death.
- The Moment of Silence: Taking a moment to simply be in the Now, acknowledging the flow of time without trying to control it.
- The Sacrilege of the Stopped Hour: Every people fears those who would halt the flow.
Weaknesses and Vulnerabilities
Aion is not invincible.
- Stasis: Aion is weakened by absolute stasis.
- Paradox: If a paradox is created (e.g., killing one's own grandfather), Aion's power is strained. The universe tries to "heal" the paradox, often with catastrophic results.
- The Unformed: Where "before" and "after" have not yet separated, Aion has nothing to carry. the Unformed are that state, and wherever they dissolve the distinction, Aion's domain goes with it.
Stewards
- The Keeper of the Unbroken Sequence StewardThe Steward of Aion who guards causality, seeing that before stays before and consequence follows act.
- The Warden of Irreversible Endings StewardThe Steward of Aion who holds that some losses cannot be reclaimed without cost; those who come to it to undo a loss are told to bring an honest account of what they will pay.
Resonants
- Calvesh the Chronos-King ResonantThe god of the elder Archive-Law world, a Resonant of Aion who embodied records that never change; he was finished, like the rolls his keepers sealed, and his name survives only inside the oath forms…
- Quennet the Clockmaker ResonantThe god of the Gnome harbours, a Resonant of Aion who stretches a closing tide-window by a breath; he is fading, because a harbour that can name who bears a lost moment, and make them pay, no longer…
- Ulaun the Stilled Hour ResonantThe Resonant of Aion born of Thaluren dread as egg blight entered the First Nesting Confluence; the stillness she gave held the clutches in a prison from which they could never hatch.
- Tamsel the Season-Weaver ResonantThe god of the turning year in the Halfling folds, a Resonant of Aion who is young and green in spring and pale and frosted in winter; the Festival of the Turn is kept for Tamsel.
