The Chromatic Chord

Frost Magic

The compound school of Aqua, Terra, and Aion with Umbra in support, which treats cold as discipline made visible. See The Schools of Magic.

Philosophy

Frost mages treat cold as discipline made visible. Heat scatters, melts, and releases. Frost binds, slows, preserves, and makes every weakness audible as a crack. In everyday life the school is used for food storage, travel, sculpture, weather survival, and battlefield denial. In war it is feared for turning motion itself into an enemy.

Because frostcraft can preserve as easily as it can mutilate, the school sits between practicality and severity. A glacier temple and a torture cellar may both rely on the same basic principles.

Example Places of Study

  • The Rime Bastions: Northern war-colleges where battlefield frost and defensive icecraft are drilled together.
  • The Glass Winter Cloister: A contemplative school of preservation, relic sleep, and sacred cold.
  • The White Quarry: Builders of ice-roads, winter forts, and bridges that last only until the thaw.
  • The Snow-Lantern Houses: Survival schools of hunting, sheltering, and cold-weather travel magic, whose beast-hunters track what comes down from the high ice in hard winters.
  • The Pale Cutters: A feared fellowship that sells its frostcraft to lords for torture and execution.

Common Spells

Rime Mail · Freeze Water · Splinter Shard · Rime Step · Snowblind · Ice Bridge · Frost Rampart · White Breath · Glacier Spike · Hailstorm · Glacial Prison · Brittle Curse · Winter Shroud · Blizzard Call · Deep Freeze

Typical Cost/Power Source (every spell): Usually fed by ambient moisture, pulled heat, stable structure, and the caster's reserves; dry heat raises the cost sharply.

Rime Mail

Purpose/How It Works
Rime Mail sheaths the caster or an ally in insulating rime and layered ice-film that blunts arrows, heat, and clawing strikes.
Notable Exceptions
Heavy impact and intense flame can crack it quickly. Mobility suffers slightly in joints and fingers.
Example Use
A caravan guard crosses a burning breach behind a sudden shell of white ice.
Casting Methods
A self-wrapping cast over a few heartbeats; an armour charm wakes in a breath.
Range/Duration
Self, or a touched ally. A few heartbeats to a short while.

Freeze Water

Purpose/How It Works
Freeze Water arrests a still or flowing body of water into solid traversable ice.
Notable Exceptions
Fast rivers, deep channels, and warm contaminated water resist clean freezing.
Example Use
Hunters seal a breach in the ice road by freezing the meltwater underneath it.
Casting Methods
A surface cast over several heartbeats; a shoreline rite takes a minute's chant or more.
Range/Duration
A pond, a stretch of stream, or a flooded room. A short while to days, depending on scale.

Splinter Shard

Purpose/How It Works
Splinter Shard forms and launches a dense shard of compressed frost that pierces, then bursts into splintering cold.
Notable Exceptions
It needs enough ambient moisture or prepared ice to form well. Thick armour reduces the bursting effect.
Example Use
A scout drops a pursuing war-hound with one glittering shard through the shoulder.
Casting Methods
A quick shard cast over a few heartbeats; a prepared icicle flies almost at once.
Range/Duration
Out to a long stone's throw. An instant strike with a brief burst of cold.

Rime Step

Purpose/How It Works
Rime Step freezes a safe foothold under each step across slick or unstable surfaces.
Notable Exceptions
It is poor on superheated metal and unstable magical surfaces.
Example Use
A thief flees across rain-slick roof tiles without slipping once while the watch go down behind her.
Casting Methods
A travelling cast over a few heartbeats; a boot charm wakes almost at once.
Range/Duration
Self. A short while, or one stage of a journey.

Snowblind

Purpose/How It Works
Snowblind fills an area with glittering frost glare and cutting white haze that overwhelms sight.
Notable Exceptions
Wind can disperse it and sealed visors resist some of the effect.
Example Use
Defenders vanish behind a wall of white brilliance as raiders stumble into each other.
Casting Methods
A sweeping glare cast over a few heartbeats; a mirror-and-frost rite takes longer.
Range/Duration
A street to a courtyard. A few heartbeats to a short while.

Ice Bridge

Purpose/How It Works
Ice Bridge lays a thick span of anchored frost between two supports for rapid crossing.
Notable Exceptions
Warm wind, siege engines, and repeated heavy shocks compromise it.
Example Use
Villagers fleeing a raid cross a chasm over a bridge that did not exist a few breaths earlier, and the raiders' horses balk at the edge of it.
Casting Methods
A span cast over many heartbeats; a gorge rite takes a short ritual.
Range/Duration
A small gap up to a stretch of river. A short while to most of a day.

Frost Rampart

Purpose/How It Works
Frost Rampart raises a broad vertical barrier of thick frozen structure for cover, division, or containment.
Notable Exceptions
Sustained heat and siege impact break it down fast.
Example Use
A retreating battlemage seals the alley with translucent blue ice while the townsfolk escape behind it.
Casting Methods
A barrier cast over several heartbeats; an anchored wall rite takes a minute's chant or more.
Range/Duration
A wall several paces long. A few heartbeats to most of a day, depending on support.

White Breath

Purpose/How It Works
White Breath projects a fan of intense freezing air and particulate ice that flash-chills flesh, fluid, and exposed material.
Notable Exceptions
It is weaker in hot dry conditions and dangerous to allies in close quarters.
Example Use
Tunnel fighters clear a choke point by freezing the front rank solid for one heartbeat.
Casting Methods
A forward exhalation over a few heartbeats; a breath through a staff focus.
Range/Duration
A short cone, a few paces out. An instant, with frost that lingers.

Glacier Spike

Purpose/How It Works
Glacier Spike drives a long dense spike of glacial force through line targets, combining piercing mass with freezing shock.
Notable Exceptions
Stone cover and layered wards can break its momentum.
Example Use
A frost knight punches through shield and breastplate in one white crack.
Casting Methods
A spear cast over a few heartbeats; a prepared lance flies almost at once.
Range/Duration
In a line, out to a long stone's throw. An instant.

Hailstorm

Purpose/How It Works
Hailstorm conjures a localized barrage of ice pellets and falling stone-cold shards.
Notable Exceptions
It is strongest outdoors and weak beneath solid roofing.
Example Use
A field line is broken when the sky begins striking helmets like slingstone rain.
Casting Methods
A skyward cast over many heartbeats; a weather-knot rite takes a short ritual.
Range/Duration
A courtyard to a small patch of battlefield. A short while.

Glacial Prison

Purpose/How It Works
Glacial Prison seals a target inside layered ice, immobilizing movement and bleeding away heat.
Notable Exceptions
Large creatures and already moving targets are harder to catch fully.
Example Use
A berserker is stopped mid-charge inside a clear coffin of screaming ice.
Casting Methods
A snap-entombing cast over a few heartbeats; a prepared circle trap closes at once.
Range/Duration
One target within sight. A few heartbeats to a short while.

Brittle Curse

Purpose/How It Works
Brittle Curse drives cold into an object or body so that it loses flexibility and begins to fracture under ordinary strain.
Notable Exceptions
Thick living bodies resist partial application, and repeated impacts are usually needed for full effect.
Example Use
Rescuers freeze a captive's chain until one hammer blow shatters it.
Casting Methods
A touch or gaze cast over several heartbeats; a marked-target rite takes longer.
Range/Duration
Touch, or within sight at middling distance. A short while to most of a day.

Winter Shroud

Purpose/How It Works
Winter Shroud cloaks a group in muffled falling frost, dampened sound, and low visibility.
Notable Exceptions
It leaves a cold trace in warm climates and can reveal itself by sudden temperature drop.
Example Use
A patrol disappears into its own whispering curtain of snow before a night raid.
Casting Methods
A group veil cast over several heartbeats; a camp concealment rite takes a minute's chant or more.
Range/Duration
A small group or a camp. A short while.

Blizzard Call

Purpose/How It Works
Blizzard Call pulls wind, snow, and suspended ice into a coherent killing storm.
Notable Exceptions
It is expensive outside cold climates and can spiral out of control in mountain terrain.
Example Use
A besieging army is cut off in the valley within the hour under a commanded whiteout.
Casting Methods
A large weather cast of a minute's chant or more; a great winter rite is a long ritual.
Range/Duration
A pocket of weather over a valley or district. Most of a day.

Deep Freeze

Purpose/How It Works
Deep Freeze locks a relic, corpse, chamber, or wound site into long-term suspended cold for preservation or denial.
Notable Exceptions
The longer the sleep, the more dangerous thaw becomes if handled poorly.
Example Use
A plague crypt is sealed in blue ice until a cure is found; generations later, delvers hack into it for the grave-goods.
Casting Methods
A reliquary freeze, a short ritual; a vault rite is a long ritual.
Range/Duration
One object, body, or chamber. Weeks to generations.
