Tamsel the Season-Weaver

Also: Tamsel, the Season-Weaver

The god of the turning year in the Halfling folds, a Resonant of Aion who is young and green in spring and pale and frosted in winter; the Festival of the Turn is kept for Tamsel. See The Gods of the Medieval Era.

Origins and Birth

Tamsel the Season-Weaver was born from the collective dependence of the Halflings of The Leeward Folds on the delicate balance of the harvest.

Unlike Quennet (born of anxiety) or Calvesh (born of fear of change), Tamsel was born of routine and reverence. For long generations the terrace and orchard folds lived by the rhythm of the seasons: when to plant, when to store, how much to hold back, and when to let a terrace rest. Their people did not pray to stop time, but to honour its turn. They believed that if they neglected the rites of spring planting or the thanks of autumn storing, the cycle would break and the fold would eat its own reserve.

Appearance and Presence

Tamsel is a figure of fluid transformation, their appearance shifting with the current season.

  • Visuals:
  • The Atmosphere: Around them, the air changes temperature and scent.
  • The Voice: Their voice sounds like the rustling of leaves, the crackling of a hearth, or the howling of a winter wind, depending on the season.

Powers and Abilities

Tamsel does not control time linearly; they manipulate the cycle.

  • The Seasonal Shift: They can locally accelerate or delay the changing of seasons.
  • The Harvest Rush: They can accelerate the growth of plants to maturity in days.
  • The Cycle of Life: They can grant a being a "season" of life.
  • The Rhythm of the Land: They can sense the "health" of a fold's cycle.

Current Status: The Fluctuation

Tamsel is active, but their power is tied to the health of the folds.

  • The Cycle: Their strength waxes and wanes with the seasons.
  • The Threat: A run of dry years is lowering the cisterns and thinning the harvest.
  • The Dilemma: Tamsel's own custom says the reserve exists for exactly such years.

Legacy and Echoes

Though Tamsel is active, their echo is felt in the folklore of the folds.

  • The Festival of the Turn: A yearly festival where the folds celebrate the changing of the seasons.
  • The Legend of the "Long Summer": A folk tale tells of a time when Tamsel stayed in the summer form for a year, bringing endless warmth and abundance.
  • The Winter Blossom: Folds tell of a siege winter when hill raiders camped below a terrace wall to starve it out, and the orchard above them blossomed overnight in the snow and set fruit within the week.
  • The Locust Bargain: In a locust year, some folds have begged Tamsel to bring winter early and kill the swarm with frost.
  • The Reserve-Thieves: A fold's counted store is its holiest thing after the turn itself, and in dry years thieves from hungrier folds come for it by night.
  • The Scattered Energy: Tamsel's energy is deeply tied to the folds.
