Ushkar the Ancestor-Warden

Also: Ushkar, the Ancestor-Warden

The Orc god of lineage and the dead on the Windscar, a Resonant of Memoria who keeps the names of kindreds that held passage on the Stele of Names and strikes the names of those who broke it, leaving them outlaws of the open country. See The Folds, the Scarps, and the Shore.

Origins and Birth

Ushkar the Ancestor-Warden was born from the collective insistence of the Orc kindreds of The Windscar Expanse that honour is remembered or it is nothing.

In the harsh country of the Windscar, survival depended on who could be trusted with passage. An escort was worth what their line had done on the road before them; a kindred was worth the crossings it had held, the treaty-grounds it had kept honest, and the betrayals it had answered. Long before the Windscar Pacts took named form, Orcs did not pray for "progress" or "change"; they prayed for continuity. They begged for "the dead to speak," for "the names to never be forgotten," and for "the line to stay worthy of the road." They believed that to forget an ancestor was to kill them a second time, and that a kindred which forgot who had broken passage would be betrayed again.

Appearance and Presence

Ushkar appears as a figure of ancient, weathered authority, carved from the very stone of the escarpments.

  • Visuals: He is a tall, broad Orcish figure whose skin resembles wind-scoured granite, etched with the lines of a thousand years.
  • The Stele: He carries a massive stone tablet (the "Stele of Names") on his back, inscribed with the names of every member of every kindred that has ever kept faith with him.
  • The Atmosphere: In places where he moves, the wind drops and the air becomes still and heavy, smelling of old dust, dried herbs, and cold stone.
  • The Voice: His voice sounds like the grinding of tectonic plates mixed with the whisper of dry leaves.

Powers and Abilities

Ushkar does not just remember; he enforces the past. He does not just honour; he judges.

  • The Lineage: He can grant a follower the strength, wisdom, or skill of their ancestors, but only if they honour their lineage.
  • The Grave-Speak: He can let the living hear the dead, asking them for counsel or revealing their final wishes.
  • The Curse of Oblivion: He can strike a person's name from memory, making them "unremembered" and effectively killing their legacy.
  • The Weight of the Past: He can lay the burden of a kindred's history on a single person, making them feel every failure and every triumph of their line.

Current Status: The Burden of Blood

Ushkar is active and powerful, but he is increasingly burdened.

  • The Conflict: Younger escorts, who spend more of their lives among other peoples than among their own dead, question whether honour should rest on lineage at all.
  • The Threat: Those whose names have been struck, and their heirs, form outlaw bands that live outside the pacts, ambush caravans on the escort roads, and reject lineage as a chain.
  • The Dilemma: Ushkar is torn between preserving the past and allowing the future.

Relationships with Other Entities

  • With Memoria Prime: Ushkar is a direct expression of Memoria's nature, embodying the "preservation" and "narrative" aspects of the Prime.
  • With Annoth the Keeper of Scrolls (Memoria): An argument of principle rather than of place, since their worshippers live a world apart.
  • With Abrel the Changeling (Imago): Opposed in nature, though their worshippers rarely meet.
  • With Ennor the Grave-Watcher (Umbra): Neighbours across the Glassbelt with a quarrel over struck names; see his page.
  • With Rakhal the Storm-Caller (Zephyr): The other Orc god of the Windscar; see his page.

Legacy and Echoes

Ushkar is a living presence across the Windscar Pacts.

  • The Reciting of the Names: When kindreds gather at upland treaty-grounds, they recite the names of their ancestors and tell the crossings they held.
  • The Legend of the "Nameless One": A folk tale tells of an escort who tried to strike his own name from the Stele to escape his family's broken oath.
  • The Fading Cairns: Along the cairn-marked routes of The High Scars, old cairns raised where escorts fell bear names worn past reading.
  • Blood-Debt Riders: A kindred whose honoured dead were shamed may ride out to take the debt back in blood, and Ushkar's name is cried at the start of such a ride.
  • The Struck Names' Raid: The outlaw bands have tried more than once to carry off or break a treaty-ground's stone of names.
