Ostrin the Lantern-Bearer
Also: Ostrin, the Lantern-Bearer
The severe, blind god of the Serathic towns, a Resonant of Lux born of grievance over dues taken and upkeep never done, who drags hidden wrongs into the light; the Ashen Lantern is called his eye. See The Gods of the Medieval Era.
Origins and Birth
Ostrin the Lantern-Bearer was born from the collective grievance of the Human trade towns of The Lower Serath, the dense lower-river corridor later bound into the Serathic League.
The corridor lives on sworn words and on whoever holds the crossing, and the coin taken at a bridge is supposed to keep the bridge up. Where trade thickened, the strong took more and kept less. The coin went into strongrooms while spans rotted and barges broke on shoals no one marked. The wronged brought their grievance to the lord's hall, and the lord found for himself and his friends. Oath-takers could be bought, ledgers said whatever their keepers needed, and those who pressed too hard were found in the reeds with a thief's knife in them. No single disaster made this; it was the ordinary greed of towns that had grown rich on passage.
Appearance and Presence
Ostrin appears as a figure of quiet, unsettling stillness.
- Visuals: He is a tall, gaunt man dressed in the simple robes of a mendicant monk, bleached white but frayed and stained with ash.
- The Atmosphere: In places where he moves, the air becomes still and sharp, like the moment before a blade is drawn.
- The Voice: His voice sounds like a bell struck in an empty hall: clear, resonant, and devoid of warmth.
Powers and Abilities
Ostrin does not fight; he reveals. He does not judge; he exposes.
- The Unmasking: He can strip away illusions, disguises, and lies, revealing the true nature of a person or object.
- The Path of Light: He can illuminate a safe path through danger, revealing traps, ambushes, and hidden passages that are invisible to others.
- The Beacon: He can project a beam of light that inspires courage in allies and terrifies those who thrive in darkness.
- The Verdict: He can force a person to speak a single, undeniable truth.
Current Status: The Lonely Crusade
Ostrin is active and powerful, but he is increasingly isolated.
- The Mission: His name is being called at Greyford in The Greyford Reach, where the failing Greyspan bridge has set Lowbank against the Bridge Hall of Highbank in the Maintenance Reckoning.
- The Isolation: Ostrin has few friends among mortals, and even the gods who count him an ally keep a wary distance.
- The Dilemma: Ostrin is beginning to question whether total truth is a kindness.
Relationships with Other Entities
- With Lux Prime: Ostrin is a pure expression of Lux's nature, embodying the truth and revelation aspects of the Prime.
- With Serovan the River-King (Aqua): The two gods share the Serath towns, and their worshippers overlap.
- With Annoth the Keeper of Scrolls (Memoria): Natural partners with an edge.
- With Abrel the Changeling (Imago): Uneasy allies, whose cults meet where corridor trade reaches the Headwater frontier.
- With Ennor the Grave-Watcher (Umbra): Uneasy allies in the Serathic towns; see his page.
- With Tavi the Bard of the Broken (Verba): Uneasy allies where corridor lords hear Goblin claims; see his page.
- With Iskel the Scribe of the Silent (Verba): Opponents in the same halls who need each other; see his page.
- With Hesserin the Shattered Saint (Faded Imago): Uneasy kin over the river powers' promises; see her page.
- Quarrels of principle with gods whose worshippers rarely meet his: Quennet the Clockmaker, who tries to hide inside the moment Ostrin would name; Saerith the Mirror-King, who demands the ideal over an honest account; and Varn the Shadow-Stalker, for whose hunted being seen is being taken.
Legacy and Echoes
Ostrin is a figure of dread and reverence in the Serath towns.
- The Lantern-Sworn: A few ascetic devotees follow Ostrin's teachings.
- The Legend of the "Blind Judge": Corridor towns tell of a lord's judge so fair that he gouged out his own eyes to avoid being swayed by appearances.
- The Ashen Lanterns: At some bridge-gates and hall doors along the corridor hang iron lanterns that emit a faint, colourless light.
- The Night-Readers: Ostrin's zealots break into oath-chests by night to read sealed rolls aloud from the oath-house steps at dawn, and towns have been turned upside down by what they read: a lord's stolen manor, a bastard heir, a murder sworn away.
- The Lantern Ordeal: In some Serath towns an accused thief may ask to be judged by the lantern instead of the rope: a devotee holds an ashen lantern to his face before the crowd while he swears.
