Kerrund the Stone-Warden

Also: Kerrund, the Stone-Warden

The god of the Dwarven hold gates, a Resonant of Terra born at a besieged gate in the early deep conflicts; his question in the Held Covenant is "will you hold?" See The Gods of the Medieval Era.

Origins and Birth

Kerrund the Stone-Warden was born from the collective fear and determination of a Dwarven hold whose deep gate was besieged during the early Dark Elf-Dwarf conflicts below the Ironspine (c. 330,000-c. 305,000 BR), the struggles whose iconic case is The Heartwell Struggles.

The gate held the only defensible passage in a contested deep corridor, and it was attacked again and again for longer than one generation. Its keepers did not pray for victory; they prayed for survival. They begged for "walls that cannot be breached," for "a foundation that cannot be shaken," and for "a guardian who will never sleep." They were willing to live in stone, eat stone-hard bread, and become as hard as the rock around them if it meant they would not be erased.

Appearance and Presence

Kerrund appears as a figure of monolithic, weathered strength, radiating the weight of centuries.

  • Visuals: He is a massive figure, nearly eight feet tall, whose skin resembles rough-hewn granite, cracked and weathered by time.
  • The Atmosphere: Where he moves, the ground becomes firm and unyielding.
  • The Voice: His voice sounds like the grinding of millstones: slow, deliberate, and heavy.

Powers and Abilities

Kerrund does not attack; he defends. He does not change; he preserves.

  • The Unmoving: Once he sets himself, nothing shifts him or the structure he braces: not force of arms, not magic, not time.
  • The Raise: He can summon walls, towers, or fortifications from the ground in moments.
  • The Oath-Bound: He can seal a vow in stone, making it unbreakable. If the vow is broken, the breaker suffers a physical fracture or collapse.
  • The Structural Sense: He can sense the integrity of any building, bridge, or wall, knowing exactly where it will fail.

Current Status: The Weight of the Walls

Kerrund is active and powerful, but he is increasingly burdened.

  • His Reach: Hold oaths, walls, and gates throughout the Ironspine Holds are sworn under his name.
  • The Dilemma: Kerrund is torn between protecting the people and preserving the walls.
  • The Loosening: As the roads of the Headwater Marches and corridor exchange draw more hold life outward, some Dwarves pray for open roads and safe passage rather than for held gates.

Relationships with Other Entities

  • With Terra Prime: Kerrund is a faithful expression of Terra's nature, keeping to its structure and permanence.
  • With The Measured Seal (Terra): Kin powers with different temperaments. Both are Dwarven gods of the shut door, but Kerrund holds the line against what comes from outside, while the Seal of the Stonewake deeps weighs whether a closure is necessary and who must answer for it.
  • With Haurûm the Mountain-Father (Terra): Younger kin and sleeping elder. Haurûm held the mountains; Kerrund holds the gates.
  • With Anvelle the Harvest-Mother (Terra): Respectful rivals. They meet in the Headwater corridors, where Dwarven works and Human fields share the same valleys.
  • With Serovan the River-King (Aqua): Distant partners and rivals. They meet only where corridor exchange carries Dwarven-built crossings and channels down towards the rivers.
  • With Ghessa the Hearth-Mother (Ignis): Wary allies where Ogre camps haul Dwarven stone; see her page.
  • With Abrel the Changeling (Imago): Rivals who share the Headwater threshold; see their page.
  • With Corrow the Gale-Runner (Zephyr): Opposites who clash at the Ironspine gates; see his page.
  • Quarrels of principle with gods whose worshippers rarely or never meet his: the Aion gods Calvesh, Ulaun, and Quennet, who sought stasis or the held moment where Kerrund keeps structure; Tamsel, who wants the land to turn; Saerith the Mirror-King, who values image over structure; and the Zephyr gods Rakhal and Haggun, for whom a wall is something to test or to break.

Legacy and Echoes

Kerrund is a living presence in the Ironspine Holds.

  • The Festival of the First Stone: A yearly rite in which each household lays a single stone on its hold's walls.
  • The Legend of the "Unbroken Gate": The holds tell of the deep gate that gave him birth, breached at last until Kerrund stood in the doorway and refused to move.
  • The Bone-Oath: An oath sealed under Kerrund is sworn on the swearer's own bones, and the holds know what a broken one looks like: the oath-breaker whose arm snapped on the hold steps in front of the elders, the traitor who opened a postern to raiders and was found at dawn folded in on himself like a dropped sack.
  • The Warden's Vigil: On the night before a raid or a siege, an Ironspine gate-warden sits alone with both hands on the gate, and the hold leaves him to it.
  • The Raised Wall: Hold annals tell of a siege broken in a single night, when a wall rose across a breached gallery between one charge and the next; they also tell of the neighbouring hall whose floor fell in the same hour, with a family asleep in it.
  • The Stone Tablets: In hold archives, the oaths and customs of the hold are cut into stone tablets.
