Saerith the Mirror-King
Also: Saerith, the Mirror-King
The High Elf god of the Crownbough Courts and of finished form, a Resonant of Imago born of the houses' pride and fear of being found less than they claimed; the most powerful and most contested patron of the Ordered Bough. See The Gods of the Medieval Era.
Origins and Birth
Saerith the Mirror-King was born from the collective pride and insecurity of the High Elf houses of the Crownbough Courts.
The great houses value refinement, memory, and durable excellence, and they expect identity to emerge into polished social form. Over long ages that expectation became a weight. The houses did not just want to be honoured; they wanted to be finished. They wanted their lines to be unbroken, their presentation flawless, and their rank beyond question. They lived in fear of being found less refined than they claimed, of a rival's champion cutting theirs down on the garden-walks, of falling short of standards they had set for themselves. They prayed not for "growth" or "change," but for perfection. They begged for "a self that never falters," for "a form that never fades," and for "a line written in gold."
Appearance and Presence
Saerith appears as a figure of terrifying, flawless beauty.
- Visuals: He is a tall, regal figure whose skin is like polished silver, reflecting the viewer's face but improved: smoother, more composed, more symmetrical.
- The Shield: He carries a shield of pure silver.
- The Atmosphere: In places where he moves, the air becomes cold and still.
- The Voice: His voice sounds like crystal ringing: clear, resonant, and devoid of warmth.
Powers and Abilities
Saerith does not help you become; he forces you to match the image.
- The Ideal: He can grant a follower temporary perfection in a specific skill or presentation, making them the "best" at what they do.
- The Reflection: He can trap a person in a vision of their "perfect self," paralysing them with the fear of not measuring up.
- The Shattering: He can break the illusion of a false identity, forcing a person to confront their flaws.
- The Gilded Cage: He can trap a person in a state of "perfect stasis," where they cannot change or make mistakes.
Current Status: The Hall of Perfection
Saerith is active and powerful, but his influence is toxic.
- The Halls: He is honoured in the great halls of The Crownboughs, above all by great houses anxious for their lineage and rank.
- The Danger: His standard travels further than his worship.
- The Dilemma: Saerith is not evil in the ordinary sense; he believes he is helping.
Relationships with Other Entities
- With Imago Prime: Saerith is a distorted expression of Imago's nature.
- With Abrel the Changeling (Imago): Natural enemies in principle.
- With Ostrin the Lantern-Bearer (Lux): Distant and uneasy.
- With Kerrund the Stone-Warden (Terra): Kindred in valuing permanence, rivals in everything else.
- With The First Man (Faded Imago): Never met, but set against him by later tellers; see his page.
Legacy and Echoes
Saerith is a living nightmare at the edges of Crownbough hall life.
- The Golden Face: At some great-house feasts, courtiers paint their faces with gold and silver, trying to match Saerith's image.
- The Legend of the "Shattered Noble": A house tale tells of a courtier who matched Saerith's image so perfectly that he shattered like glass.
- The Heir Controversy: Courtiers devoted to Saerith remember The Crownbough Heir Controversy (c. 14,000-c. 13,000 BR), when a mixed Human-High Elf heir became a prize worth fighting over before anyone agreed whose the child was, as proof of how much lineage can be made to bear.
- The Silver Mirrors: In some old and abandoned halls, there are mirrors that show the viewer a "perfect" version of themselves.
