Ulaun the Stilled Hour

Also: Ulaun, the Stilled Hour

The Resonant of Aion born of Thaluren dread as egg blight entered the First Nesting Confluence; the stillness she gave held the clutches in a prison from which they could never hatch. See Peoples of the Water.

Origins and Birth

Ulaun the Stilled Hour was born from the collective terror of the Thaluren as egg blight entered their oldest sacred water.

The First Nesting Confluence was the place where Thaluren return was completed and seen to be completed, the proof that their sea-to-river order held. When eggs laid there under every proper rite began to fail, in the crisis described in The Closure of the First Nesting Confluence (c. 178,000-c. 162,000 BR), the people did not first pray for a cure; they prayed for safety. They begged the cosmos to "stop the blight," to freeze the clutches in the moment before it took hold, to make the sanctuary a water where time did not pass and death could not follow.

Appearance and Presence

In full manifestation, Ulaun appeared as absolute, terrifying perfection.

  • Visuals: She had no distinct features.
  • The Atmosphere: Around her, the water froze without turning to ice.
  • The Voice: She did not speak.

Powers and Abilities

Ulaun did not "control" time; she erased it.

  • The Perfect Pause: She could freeze a specific reach of water in time.
  • The Stasis Field: She could expand her influence across whole sanctuary waters.
  • The Preservation of the Moment: She could keep one moment forever: a clutch at the instant of laying, a run at the top of its ascent, the water as it was before the blight.
  • The Immortality of the Frozen: Those she held were technically immortal, but they were also trapped.

The Fall: The Nightmare of Perfection

Ulaun's existence was a paradox. By freezing time, she turned sanctuary into a prison.

  • The Horror: The Thaluren learned that life requires change.
  • The Turning: The people began to pray not for "safety," but for movement.
  • The Shift: The collective belief shifted from "freeze the water" to "keep the water answerable." Ulaun, sustained by the belief in stillness, found her fuel turning into anti-fuel.
  • The Shattering: Ulaun did not die; she shattered.
  • The Living Answer: What replaced her was a rule of keeping. The Blightward Keepers keep damaged water guarded, studied, contained, watched, and ritually answered: containment that lets time run and keeps answering for it.

Legacy and Echoes

Although Ulaun has faded, her echo still lingers in the world.

  • The Still Pools: Some reaches of the closed confluence are said to hold pools where the current should run and does not, where silt hangs unmoving.
  • The Roped Keeper: Thaluren laments tell of a keeper who tied a line to the bank and swam into the stilled water to drag her mate out of it, and was held there beside him, the line slack in the current behind her.
  • The Hour Owed: What the stillness held met its owed time at once when it broke.
  • The Warning of the Held Clutches: Custodial teaching remembers her as the proof that stillness is not care.
  • The Scattered Energy: The energy of Ulaun did not vanish; it returned to the Aion Prime.
