Ghessa the Hearth-Mother

Also: Ghessa, the Hearth-Mother

The Ogre hearth-god, a Resonant of Ignis born of famine winters and small fires that had to last, and the gentlest of its gods. See The Gods of the Medieval Era.

Origins and Birth

Ghessa the Hearth-Mother was born from the collective need for survival during The Long Hunger (c. 195,000-c. 160,000 BR), the long upland famine that came as the upland colossal world withdrew from Caeldon's high country.

The winters ran long, the range failed, and Ogre burden households, large bodies that needed much to feed, huddled around small fires praying that the fuel would last and that the stores would stretch to the weakest. Some camps broke into hunger-bands that raided their neighbours and the last colossal stores, and left their own old and young behind in the snow. The households that held became the first hearth-houses, binding their strength to feeding and sheltering the vulnerable first. They did not pray for conquest or plenty; they prayed for warmth, for enough, and for the strength not to turn on their own.

Appearance and Presence

Ghessa appears as a figure of warm, matronly comfort, radiating a gentle, golden light.

  • Visuals: She is a broad, heavy-framed Ogre woman of indeterminate age, with skin the colour of sun-warmed stone and cheeks flushed with a healthy glow.
  • The Lantern: She carries a simple lantern of iron and glass, containing a flame that never flickers, no matter the wind.
  • The Atmosphere: Where she moves, the air becomes warm and dry, chasing away the chill.
  • The Voice: Ghessa's voice sounds like the soft crackle of a hearth fire mixed with the hum of a lullaby: soothing, reassuring, and deeply comforting.

Powers and Abilities

Ghessa does not burn; she warms. She does not destroy; she heals.

  • The Kept Flame: She can create a fire that never goes out, providing warmth and light indefinitely.
  • The Warmth: She can heal frostbite, cure chills, and soothe the pain of the sick by transferring her warmth into them.
  • The Shield: She can raise a barrier of heat that holds back cold and ice.
  • The Comfort: She can induce a state of deep relaxation and safety in those near her, calming fear and anxiety.

Current Status: The Fading Warmth

Ghessa is active, but her power is slowly fading.

  • The Keeping: She is still kept at Ogre camp fires and in the burden houses of the Hearth-Weight Compacts, where hearth-right keepers treat food, rest, and shelter as owed rather than as charity.
  • The Shift: Since The Chain-Camps (c. 18,000-c. 8,000 BR), when debt and controlled food turned hearth-weight against the camps that kept it, settled powers have learned to treat Ogre strength as mere labour.
  • The Symptoms: Her form is becoming slightly translucent.
  • The Dilemma: She follows the bands into quarry camps, siege lines, and road crews, trying to keep a hearth lit wherever the work is: the fire the crews sleep round while lords' wars are fought on the ladders above them, the fire at a washed-out road camp with wolves in the dark beyond it.

Relationships with Other Entities

  • With Ignis Prime: Ghessa is a gentle expression of Ignis's nature, embodying the protective and nurturing aspects of fire.
  • With Haurûm the Mountain-Father (Terra): Ghessa was born in the cold that Haurûm's withdrawing world left behind.
  • With Kerrund the Stone-Warden (Terra): Where Ogre camps haul stone for Dwarven walls and roads, or drag rams and siege-stones in a hold's wars, Kerrund and Ghessa meet as wary allies.
  • With Ozhar the Pyre-King (Faded Ignis): Their spans overlap, but never their worship.
  • With Haggun the Wall-Breaker (Faded Zephyr): Kin in principle, both answering hearth-weight; see his page.

Legacy and Echoes

Ghessa is a living legend wherever Ogre camps keep hearth-weight.

  • The Passed Flame: In deep winter, many camps light a single flame and carry it from fire to fire through wolf-haunted dark, so that no household under the camp's burden is left in the dark.
  • The Legend of the "Last Ember": A tale from the Long Hunger tells of a winter so cold that every fire in a hearth-house went out.
  • The Hunger-Band Tales: Every frontier knows the hungry band that comes down off the hills in a hard winter and takes a village's stores, its cattle, and sometimes its people.
  • The Flame-Carriers: The one who carries the passed flame through the winter dark is chosen at the fire and goes alone, because a second carrier would mean a fire left unguarded.
  • The Cold Fire of the Chain-Camps: Overseers in the Chain-Camps doled out fuel and lit the crews' fires themselves, and Ogre memory holds that Ghessa would not come to a fire an overseer kindled.
  • The Warm Stones: In the stone rings of abandoned high-country camps, there are stones that remain warm to the touch, even in the coldest winter.
