Ennor the Grave-Watcher
Also: Ennor, the Grave-Watcher
The god who stands at the threshold of the dead, a Resonant of Umbra condensed over ages of burial, whom most cradle-web peoples honour at their graves under names of their own; Ennor is his Human name. See The Gods of the Medieval Era.
Origins and Birth
Ennor the Grave-Watcher was not born from any single grief. He condensed slowly, over ages of burial and mourning, out of the funerary custom of many peoples at once.
Every people on Caeldon buries, burns, returns, or otherwise finishes its dead, and beneath the differing rites the same need keeps recurring: that the dead be seen to the threshold, that they not wander, and that something of them be kept. Mourners did not pray to escape death. They prayed for remembrance and safe passage. They asked for "someone to watch the grave," for "a guide for the one who has gone," and for "a keeper so that no name is lost." Burial practice belongs to the deepest root of alignment custom in every people, which is why no single people can claim him.
Appearance and Presence
Ennor appears as a figure of humble, timeless sorrow, radiating a cool, comforting stillness.
- Visuals: He is a tall, slender figure draped in a hooded cloak woven from the shadows of twilight.
- The Atmosphere: In places where he moves, the air becomes cool and still.
- The Voice: His voice sounds like the rustle of dry leaves mixed with the soft exhale of a dying breath.
Powers and Abilities
Ennor does not raise the dead; he guides them. He does not bring death; he preserves the trace of life.
- The Guiding Light: He can lead a lost Echo towards stable Record, preventing it from becoming a restless haunt or wandering trace.
- The Trace-Reading: He can read the history of a place from the Echoes that linger there, revealing what happened, who was there, and what was felt.
- The Memory-Anchor: He can preserve a specific memory or name, ensuring it is not forgotten even if the world tries to erase it.
- The Silent Witness: He can show a truth that no one else saw, making it impossible to deny: a murderer has been seen to freeze at a graveside while the ground itself remembered.
Current Status: The Weight of Many Rites
Ennor is active and essential, but he is overwhelmed. No catastrophe did this to him. The ordinary dead of a whole cradle of peoples did.
- Many Dead, Many Completions: Every people's dead come to the same threshold, and every people expects something different to happen there.
- Rites in Conflict: Where peoples live together, a death can be left half-finished while each side refuses the other's rite, and the Echoes of such dead linger and fray.
- The Unclaimed: Beyond every rite lie the dead nobody finishes: those who die in hiding, on broken roads, or without kin; travellers taken by bandits and left in the ditch; the fallen of a raid nobody came back to bury; and those whose warrants or names were struck before they died.
- The Threat: He counts as enemies only those who work the forbidden magic of forced Echo extraction and Record scarring, described under Dark Magic and Record Integrity.
- The Dilemma: The Watcher is torn between saving the Echoes and comforting the living.
Relationships with Other Entities
- With Umbra Prime: Ennor is a compassionate expression of Umbra's nature, embodying the "trace" and "reflection" aspects of the Prime.
- With Varn the Shadow-Stalker (Umbra): Kin in the same Prime with different charges.
- With Annoth the Keeper of Scrolls (Memoria): Close allies in the corridor world.
- With Ostrin the Lantern-Bearer (Lux): Uneasy allies in the Serathic towns.
- With Ushkar the Ancestor-Warden (Memoria): Neighbours across the Glassbelt with a quarrel.
- With Iskel the Scribe of the Silent (Verba): Kindred spirits.
- With Tavi the Bard of the Broken (Verba): Close allies. Tavi keeps alive in song what the records struck; Ennor keeps the dead whom those records forgot.
- With The Tomb-Builder (Faded Terra): Opposed at the threshold; see his page.
- With The Echo-Mother (Faded Umbra): Close in Prime, opposed in the Held; see her page.
Legacy and Echoes
Ennor is honoured at nearly every grave in the cradle-web, though few who honour him know how many others do.
- Grave-Lights: Many peoples set lights at graves or places of return in the nights after a death, each at its own season and in its own way.
- One Watcher, Many Names: Mourners of different peoples who share a burial ground sometimes discover that they have been calling on the same watcher by different names.
- The Legend of the "Lost Name": Mourners tell of a child who died without a name.
- The Ditch-Finders: Some of his devoted take to the roads to find the unclaimed: they follow crows and vultures to where bandits dumped a traveller, cut down the hanged at crossroads, and give the rites where the body lies.
- The Barrow-Wardens: Villages beside the old barrows pay a grave-warden to sit out the long nights with a lantern and a dog, for fear of grave-robbers and of what robbers wake.
- The Shadow-Paths: In the oldest burial grounds, there are paths that seem to lead nowhere.
