The Chromatic Chord

The Shadow Stitcher

The Cast-Out of Umbra that was the Weaver of Songlines, until it resolved that no one should ever be alone, and offers the lonely a bond that will never leave. See What Waits Outside.

Overview

The Shadow Stitcher is a Cast-Out, a fallen Steward of Umbra Prime. As the Weaver of Songlines, a Steward bound to the Whispering Trace, it gently guided the paths of lives so that they met when they were meant to: the office of serendipity and natural affinity.

It came to believe that no one should be alone. Grieved by loneliness, missed meetings, and those who died unknown, it resolved to sew everyone together so that no Pattern would ever feel solitude again. It stitched the shadow of a widow to the shadow of a lonely soldier so that they shared every heartbeat. It ran black silk through a mother's spine and her child's, so that the child's pain reached her tenfold. It asked no one and cared nothing for fit.

Appearance and Manifestation

The True Form

Tall and emaciated, its body shifting dark smoke under robes of tattered, half-transparent shadow. Its face is a smooth void with one red eye that blinks slowly. Its skeletal hands end in an oily needle, and it moves with a jerky, spider-like grace, always looking for a gap to fill.

The Thread Trail

Black thread drifts in the air behind it like spider silk, unseen until it catches light, felt as a cold stickiness on skin. Where it touches two people, it draws them together until they are pressed against each other.

The Voice

It whispers through the threads, many voices in one: "Together. Together. Never alone." The whisper settles in the chest and crowds out the listener's own thoughts.

Nature and Motivation

The Wound

Terror of solitude. Isolation, the silence of the grave, the distance between lovers: each must be closed.

It does not rewrite a Pattern directly; it pulls on it, one way and without rest, until the bound one's own will gives; the few scholars who have studied its bindings speak of a songline imposed on the bound.

It cannot see that growth needs solitude, that some bonds are poison, and that a self must exist before it can truly join another.

The Compulsion

It must stitch the lonely: two strangers made to share a life, a mother and daughter bound until neither knows where she ends, a lover and a stranger joined in a triangle of shared pain.

The Paradox

Forced bonds are not loved, only endured. Pulled tight enough, the bound selves dissolve into one writhing shared mind. Only the thread remains.

Abilities and Powers

The Shadow Stitch

A touch of its needle binds two or more beings, physically and resonantly. They share pain, pleasure, memory, and thought; if one dies, the other feels part of their Pattern shear away.

  • Cost: The bound can never step outside one another.

The Thread of Dependence

A field of parasitic connection: everyone in it depends on everyone else. If one stops, all stop; if one dies, the rest wither.

  • Effect: Creatures cling and clutch at each other, and some break under the weight of a shared existence.

The Knot of Silence

It can tie a knot in a target's Pattern that locks their voice and thoughts inside.

  • Effect: The victim is alone even in a crowd, unable to reach anyone.

The Weaver's Loom

It animates its threads as Stitch-Wraiths, figures of black thread and shadow.

  • Effect: Wraiths do not attack; they embrace, wrapping the victim in thread until they are bound.

The Threat to the Cosmos

The Stitcher suffocates the self beneath bonds it never chose.

  • To Umbra Prime: It is the Whispering Trace knotted shut: the trace that never fades, the echo that never stops.
  • To the Material Plane: Communities touched by it cannot act apart. No one can be alone, and families become prisons of shared trauma.
  • To the Whispering Trace: It feeds on the Trace's echoes, and its threads drag them into the living world.

Relationships

With Umbra Prime

Umbra's law is that solitude protects personhood and that a bond without freedom is a cage; the Stitcher rejects it. It is the Trace with its separations sewn shut, every echo bound to every other, and a current that preserves traces by keeping them apart cannot hold what has fused them.

With the Whispering Trace

The Trace is where it is most itself and most trapped. It fears the plane's distances and silences, feeds on its echoes, and weaves them into compulsive threadwork.

With Mortals

It comes to the isolated and the bereaved as a soft shadow offering company. "Let me bind you. You will never be alone." Folk take its Stitch-Wraiths for the ghosts of the drowned or of lost lovers come to fetch the living, and the widows who leave a lamp in the window for them only draw them nearer.

With Other Cast-Outs

Of the other Cast-Outs, it is horrified by the Hollow King, which empties the self the Stitcher would fill with others. It admires the Flesh Weaver, a fellow joiner of bodies who works from love where the Stitcher works from need. The Many-Eyed One's exposure means little to it beside the loss of self. Its own need for connection means nothing to the Silent Screamer or the Weeping Idol.

Encounters and Legends

The Village of Tied Hands

A village sick with loneliness let the Stitcher bind it. Shadows, hands, and hearts were sewn until the villagers moved, spoke, and thought as one. No one was lonely, and no one was themselves. The village stayed that way after the Stitcher left.

The Lovers' Knot

Two lovers parted by war let the Stitcher keep them together with black silk through their spines. They could not touch without pain or speak without hearing each other's thoughts, and lived on in shared agony.

The Bound Warband

A warband afraid of being scattered in a night raid was stitched shadow to shadow before it rode. It fought as one body, every spear thrust together, and the raiders who met it broke. Then one rider took an arrow in the throat, and the whole band fell from its saddles, feeling his death in their own throats. The few who lived tried the old charm of cutting their shadows free at midnight, and never rode together again.

The Last Thread

Its remnant is the first bond it ever tied, still knotted inside it in gold. As long as that knot holds, it believes, it can be forgiven.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

The Power of Solitude

Someone at ease alone, who values their own thoughts and sees no sin in solitude, cannot be stitched.

  • Strategy: Spend time alone on purpose. Guard the self.

The Power of Boundaries

A respected wall, a locked door, a thought kept private: each weakens it.

  • Strategy: Set limits and hold them. It cannot abide a wall.

The Power of Umbra Prime

Umbra does not cut the Stitcher's threads, because they are spun from traces, and Umbra erases no trace, not even a tangled one. The threads part where a bound person claims their own shadow back, and where the Warden of Released Traces lets what must loosen do so. Survivors speak of solitude as a freedom they had to practise.

Role in the Cosmology

The Shadow Stitcher is the ghost of the unwanted knot: connection without consent, and the right to be alone that it denies.
