The Chromatic Chord

The Rust Flower

The Beyonder of premature ending, from the Oxidized Wastes, under which steel, stone, and flesh fall apart before their time; it yields to preservation. An example of what a Beyonder could be; none of its Incursions has reached Caeldon. See What Waits Outside.

Overview

The Rust Flower comes from the Oxidized Wastes, a cosmology where nothing endures. Metal crumbles in seconds, stone becomes sand, and flesh rots before it is finished. "Lasting" is a myth there; the only truth is the slide into dust.

It is a god of premature ending. It wants to wear things out, and it takes the strength of steel, the hardness of stone, and the resilience of flesh for an unnatural refusal to fall apart on time. It is here to help the universe catch up: the sword that powders in the hand, the castle that slumps to rubble in a heartbeat, the child whose bones go brittle as an old man's. Time runs no faster under it; only what things are made of gives way.

Appearance and Manifestation

The Rust Flower is decay itself, become conscious. It arrives as The Rustfall.

The Avatar

  • Visuals: A towering flower of corroded metal, rotten wood, and decaying flesh.
  • Scale: A withered bud on a hinge, or a crust of crumbling ruin across a landscape, with every flake spreading the decay.
  • Sound: A dry, rasping crunch like a billion dead leaves crushed at once.

The Incursion

Where the Rustfall settles, Durability and Substance give out:

  • The Rustfall: A sword rusts through in seconds; a stone wall sifts to dust; a person's flesh wastes in minutes, skin cracking and bones thinning.
  • The Corrosion: A single rust spot eats across a whole hull in moments, a single rot over a whole forest. The ground goes soft and crumbly and cannot bear weight.
  • Strays: Rust Mites, flea-small rust-red specks, would come through with it and crawl to the strongest metal, timber, and limb they could find; oil and wax stop them.
  • The Loss of Strength: Steel turns brittle, stone to sand, flesh to mush.

Nature and Motivation

The Philosophy of the Final Rust

The Rust Flower reasons from radical inevitability.

  • The Flaw: Durability is a lie. A mountain lasting for ages, or a person living for decades, is an affront to how things really are.
  • The Solution: Hurry the decay along. Not cruelty but honesty.
  • The Goal: A cosmos already gone to dust and rust.

The Incompatibility

The Resonance Principle needs forms that last long enough to meet, and The Rust Flower wears every form down (see what every Incursion shares). A spell's weave corrodes before it completes, cells decay faster than they can divide, and a mind rots along with the brain that holds it.

Abilities and Powers

The Great Decay

It can rot or corrode any matter, living or not: a battlefield becomes a graveyard of crumbling armour, a fortress a pile of rubble, a hero a husk.

The Rust Spores

Its rust spores settle on metal, wood, and skin alike, and each spot of corrosion sheds more of them as it crumbles. A castle under siege by the Rustfall would lose its gate before its garrison saw an enemy, and a knight his sword in the scabbard.

The Rust-Hosts

Its hosts, the Rust-Hosts, are walking tombs: skin like old leather, bones like dry sticks, eyes like empty pits. They move with a slow creak, leaving trails of dust, and they seek out whatever is still strong.

Reality Corrosion

At full strength it corrodes natural law itself: gravity weakens, matter loses its cohesion, and the rules of reality flake away a little more each moment.

The Threat to the Cosmos

Like Qzoth, The Rust Flower stands against the Primes of Form and Stability, but it wears form away instead of overgrowing it.

  • Terra Prime (Structure) is opposed by The Rust Flower's Crumbling.
  • Iron Backbone (Stability) is opposed by The Rust Flower's Brittleness.
  • Frozen Moment (Permanence) is opposed by The Rust Flower's Ephemerality.
  • Verba Prime (Definition) is opposed by The Rust Flower's Obscurity.

Aqua, Ignis, and Zephyr can each clear its rust, never as fast as it returns; see their pages.

Its victory is a cosmic graveyard: everything, the Primes' domains included, worn to a single field of dust.

The Horror of the Wasted

Its victims are not changed into something alien; their substance simply gives out. A smith watches the hand that held the hammer flake away at the knuckles, and feels every crack; a war-hero's sword arm withers first, since it seeks the strongest limb.

The Cascade Failure

The Rust Flower treats the Boundary as one more material to wear out. It pits and flakes it until it is brittle enough to crumble at a touch, and the Nothing pours in through the holes.

Inhabitants and Followers

The Rust-Hosts

  • Description: Crumbling, still-decaying figures; some keep scraps of who they were.
  • Behaviour: They grip whatever is still strong, a sword arm or a roof beam, and their touch corrodes it to dust.

The Cult of the Final Dust

No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.

  • Description: Mortals who feel existence as a burden and would see decay as release.
  • Beliefs: They would break their own bodies, wreck their own belongings, and poison their own food, and count strength as arrogance and long life as a sin.
  • Decline Trigger: Most would crumble with what they worship, and what was left of them would walk on as Rust-Hosts.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

The Rust Flower's weakness is Preservation.

The Power of Stasis

What is perfectly preserved resists it: a frozen moment, a sealed tomb, a conviction that does not wear.

  • Strategy: Keep things whole. Mend, seal, and maintain faster than it can corrode.
  • Artefacts: Oiled steel, waxed wood, or a sealed reliquary holds a pocket of permanence against the Rustfall.

The Resonance of the Primes

  • Terra Prime can harden matter against decay.
  • Frozen Moment can stop the crumbling outright.
  • Verba Prime can anchor what a thing is through its name.
  • The Iron Backbone can hold structure against brittleness.

The Boundary

The Flower wears at the Boundary from its first moment, so the Boundary must be shored up as well as reinforced (the Primes' intervention).

Role in the Cosmology

The Rust Flower is the danger of decay without purpose, and a reminder that what lasts, lasts because someone keeps it.
