The Static
Also: The Static, the White Noise
The White Noise, a Beyonder that buries every signal in hiss and flicker until the senses report what is not there; one clear, steady thought cuts through it. An example of what a Beyonder could be; none of its Incursions has reached Caeldon. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
The Static comes from the White Void, a cosmology where information does not exist. There is no signal, message, or shape there, only White Noise, an endless hiss in which every frequency jams every other.
Silence Seed takes the word away; The Static buries the signal that would carry it. It wants to jam. The clear signals of our universe (distinct thoughts, defined natural law, the separate identities of beings) are to it messages to be drowned, because clarity is an illusion and the hiss is the only truth. It is a thousand stations heard at once, a call dissolving into crackle, a beacon lost in flicker.
The Static has never reached Caeldon, and what is told here is what its Incursion would do.
Appearance and Manifestation
The Static is the absence of signal, become conscious. It arrives as The Hiss.
The Avatar
- Visuals: A haze seething with tiny, random motion, like dust seething in a shaft of light. Shapes flicker in and out of it: half-formed faces, half-real objects, half-heard calls.
- Scale: A small local flicker, or a landscape blanketed in unreadable noise, with every fragment jamming the signal.
- Sound: A shrill hiss, a billion voices on a billion frequencies, that hurts the ears and scrambles thought.
The Incursion
Wherever the Hiss spreads, Information and Clarity are drowned:
- The Hiss: Every signal arrives garbled: a horn call as hiss, a signal fire as a smear of flicker, a nerve's message as a twitch.
- The Glitch: Objects flicker like a fading image, and the senses report what is not there: a door where a wall stands, a voice from an empty chair.
- The Unreadable: Every message, a bell's peal, a scent on the wind, a lamp in a window, is buried in noise until nothing reaches its receiver.
- Strays: Hiss-Flies would come through with it, flickering flecks that settle on bells, lamps, mouths, and ears and garble them; one steady sound drives them off.
Nature and Motivation
The Philosophy of the Final Noise
The Static reasons from radical interference.
- The Flaw: Every distinct thought is a lie, every defined rule a prison, every identity a delusion.
- The Solution: Drown out the signal, and every distinction blurs away. Not chaos but purity.
- The Goal: One endless Hiss, where no message can be sent or received.
The Incompatibility
The Resonance Principle runs on clear signals, and The Static floods them (see what every Incursion shares). A spell's intent is garbled into something else, or into an explosion; a brain drowned in noise loses its body; ideas that cannot be told apart cannot be thought.
Abilities and Powers
The Great Jamming
It can drown every signal within reach: a spell mid-cast, a thought half-formed, the idea of clarity itself.
The Glitch Field
Within the field reality stutters. Objects flicker, the senses lose track of what is there, and a sword reads as a flower and back. Two war-hosts caught in it would cut each other down by mistake, each hearing its own horns as the enemy's. It travels along anything that carries a message: air, water, nerve.
The Noise-Hosts
Its hosts, the Noise-Hosts, are glitching vessels: flickering, half-formed figures that move in a stuttering jerk, as if their motion were caught on a skipping frame. They seek out clear minds, and a Noise-Host may stutter close to a traveller until its touch fills their head with hiss.
Reality Glitch
At full strength it scrambles the fundamental forces: gravity flips, light fails, and the rules change from moment to moment.
The Threat to the Cosmos
The Static is the antithesis of the Primes of Clarity and Definition.
- Verba Prime (Language) is opposed by The Static's Garble.
- Terra Prime (Structure) is opposed by The Static's Glitch.
- Lux Prime (Possibility) is opposed by The Static's Uncertainty.
- The Binding Song is opposed by The Static's Noise.
Its noise also leaves what Memoria and Umbra keep unreadable; see their pages.
Its victory is one endless Hiss, the Primes' domains drowned out with everything else.
The Horror of the Unreadable
It does not kill; it blurs. A mother sees her child's face smear into flecks. Its victims think clearly inside and come out as gibberish to everyone else. A village would hear its own watchman's warning as hiss and a raider's war-cry as a friend's hail.
The Cascade Failure
The Boundary holds only while it can be read from both sides. The Static drowns that signal, and once inside can no longer be told from outside, the Hiss lets the Nothing in.
Inhabitants and Followers
The Noise-Hosts
- Description: The flickering vessels described above. They speak only in hiss.
- Behaviour: They surround anyone still clear-headed until that one is garbled too.
The Cult of the Final Noise
No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.
- Description: Mortals who find meaning a burden and would find the Hiss a relief.
- Beliefs: They would blind their eyes, stop their ears, and douse every signal fire, and treat clarity as sin.
- Decline Trigger: Most would drown in the Hiss; a few would go on as Noise-Hosts.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
The Static's weakness is Signal.
The Power of Clarity
A strong, distinct, focused signal cuts through it.
- Strategy: Focus on one clear thought and hold it; a wandering mind is jammed first.
- Artefacts: A clear gem, a sharp knife, or one steady lamp keeps a small space readable.
The Resonance of the Primes
- Verba Prime can sharpen language and speech.
- Terra Prime can steady matter against glitching.
- Lux Prime can bring possibility back into focus.
- The Binding Song can restore connection and order.
The Boundary
Reinforcing the Boundary pushes it out (the Primes' intervention), provided that line can still be read.
Role in the Cosmology
The Static is the danger of absolute interference: a reminder that meaning needs a clear signal to survive.
