Xyphra
Also: Xyphra, the Unraveller
The Unraveller, a Beyonder that dissolves the glue between things, so that a blade leaves its hilt mid-swing; it cannot cut a bond held hard. An example of what a Beyonder could be; none of its Incursions has reached Caeldon. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
Xyphra comes from the Fractured Dimension, a cosmology where nothing holds together. Atoms do not bond, no place lies next to another, and thoughts do not attach to memories. Each moment there is a scatter of unrelated shards that never become a whole.
Xyphra does not smash things; it dissolves the glue. It wants to sever. The causal chains of our universe, the link from cause to effect, from thought to deed, from parent to child, are to it needless shackles on each free shard. It is the sword that swings and never strikes, the love felt and never shared, the book whose pages are torn loose so they can never be read in order.
Appearance and Manifestation
Xyphra is separation itself, become conscious. It arrives as The Shatter.
The Avatar
- Visuals: A slow whirl of jagged, floating shards cut loose from their context: a hand without its arm, a house without its foundation, a memory without its mind.
- Scale: One hairline crack in the air, or a whole landscape hung in pieces.
- Sound: A crystalline crack like a billion panes breaking, then nothing where connection should be.
The Incursion
Wherever the Shatter spreads, Causality and Connection part:
- The Shatter: A blade leaves its hilt mid-swing; a door leaves its wall; a thought leaves the memory it came from.
- The Fragmentation: The ground splits into islands that float apart, and the gap between them widens whenever anyone tries to cross.
- The Unbinding: Near and far stop meaning anything: a hand reaches for a cup and finds it a field away, and two rooms that share a wall no longer share a door.
Nature and Motivation
The Philosophy of the Final Fracture
Xyphra reasons from radical isolation.
- The Flaw: Every bond is a chain. That a seed must become a tree, or a word must mean something, is an affront.
- The Solution: Break every bond, so each being floats free of past, future, and other. Not chaos but liberation.
- The Goal: A cosmos of floating shards where nothing touches anything.
The Incompatibility
The Resonance Principle is a web of links, and Xyphra cuts them (see what every Incursion shares). A spell loses the thread between caster and target; cells let go of each other; ideas come apart into a million unrelated pieces.
Abilities and Powers
The Great Severing
It snaps any bond within reach: the link of a spell, the thread of a thought, the idea of connection itself.
The Fracture Field
Within the field nothing holds: objects come apart, people lose the thread of their memories, and a person might take a step and find the ground they left a mile behind. It spreads through the gaps between things, widening each.
The Sundered
Its hosts, the Sundered, are bodies come apart: head, torso, and limbs hang separately in the air, never touching, with wide and terrified eyes. They seek out bonds, and wherever a floating hand of the Sundered settles on a traveller, the traveller's own body begins to drift apart.
Reality Unravelling
At full strength it pulls natural law apart: gravity loosens from mass, charge from force, one place from the next.
The Threat to the Cosmos
Xyphra is the antithesis of the Primes of Connection and Causality.
- Verba Prime (Language) is opposed by Xyphra's Disconnection.
- Terra Prime (Structure) is opposed by Xyphra's Fragmentation.
- The Binding Song is opposed by Xyphra's Severing.
- The Shifting Path is opposed by Xyphra's Discontinuity.
Its victory is a cosmos in shards, each Prime's domain cut off from every other.
The Horror of the Unlinked
It does not kill; it cuts loose. A child reaches for her mother across a room that keeps widening; a sword-brother falls a pace away, and the pace is a mile. Its victims stand among their own people and can touch none of them.
The Cascade Failure
The Boundary is the seam where inside meets outside. Xyphra cuts places apart, and once that seam parts, the Nothing fills the space between the pieces.
Inhabitants and Followers
The Sundered
- Description: The floating, separated figures described above, their pieces kept a hand's breadth apart by empty air.
- Behaviour: They drift around anyone still bound to others until those bonds are cut.
The Cult of the Final Fracture
No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.
- Description: Mortals who feel their bonds as burdens and would find in the Fracture's widening gaps a promise of freedom.
- Beliefs: They would cut their own ties, break their own families and friendships, and live alone, and count love a disease.
- Decline Trigger: Most would come apart in the Fracture; a few would go on among the Sundered.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
Xyphra's weakness is Bond.
The Power of Connection
A bond it cannot cut, a promise, a love, a memory held in common, stands against it.
- Strategy: Hold on to each other. Keep hands joined and names spoken; a loose bond is cut first.
- Artefacts: A wedding ring, a shared heirloom, or a written vow holds a pocket where things still connect.
The Resonance of the Primes
- Verba Prime can rebind words to their meanings.
- Terra Prime can hold matter together against fragmentation.
- The Binding Song can restore connection and order.
- The Shifting Path can mend causality and continuity.
The Boundary
Pushing it out (the Primes' intervention) means mending the Boundary at every place Xyphra has cut it.
Role in the Cosmology
Xyphra is the danger of absolute isolation: a reminder that the world is made of what holds it together.
