Silence Seed
Also: Silence Seed, the Quiet Plague
The Quiet Plague, a Beyonder whose sign is what stops: birdsong, the wind in the grass, a traveller's own footsteps; it breaks on loud, ragged noise. An example of what a Beyonder could be; none of its Incursions has reached Caeldon. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
Silence Seed comes from the Hushed Cosmos, where nothing is ever said. There is no voice, song, or speech there, and no vibration to carry one, only the Quiet, a silence that spreads like a disease.
This is not restful silence. Silence Seed wants to spread. It hears our universe's words, songs, screams, and laughter as pollution and plants silence in it like a seed in soil; where it takes root, no voice rises again. It is the scream that dies in the throat and the word that dissolves before it reaches the lips.
The Silence Seed has never been sown on Caeldon; what follows is what its Incursion would be.
Appearance and Manifestation
Silence Seed is the unspoken word, become conscious. It arrives as The Quiet.
The Avatar
- Visuals: A small, dark, seed-like thing that seems to drink light and sound.
- Scale: One tiny seed, or a dark carpet of spreading silence across a landscape, with every fragment spreading the Quiet.
- Sound: None. Its sign is what stops: birdsong, the rustle of wind, one's own footsteps. The silence is predatory.
The Incursion
Where the Seed takes root, Vibration and Communication fail:
- The Quiet: A shout makes no sound, a drum no beat. The silence spreads outward from the seed.
- The Contagion: Those who hear the silence lose their own voices, then their footsteps, and at last become part of the Quiet.
- The Unspoken: Words lose their meaning, written pages go blank, and symbols say nothing.
Nature and Motivation
The Philosophy of the Final Quiet
Silence Seed reasons from radical purity.
- The Flaw: Every word spoken violates the Quiet; every song is an intrusion; every scream a wound.
- The Solution: Remove the source. Not peace but purity.
- The Goal: A cosmos in which nothing vibrates and nothing can be said.
The Incompatibility
The Resonance Principle is vibration, and Silence Seed stills it (see what every Incursion shares). Spells need something to carry them; bodies need heartbeat, breath, and nerve signal; and minds, deprived of sound and language, stop forming thoughts.
Abilities and Powers
The Great Quiet
Its silence actively eats vibration. It can still a spell mid-cast, a scream mid-throat, or the idea of sound.
The Contagion
The Quiet passes from the silenced to those near them, carried by air, water, and the silence itself.
- Effect: Stage 1: voices weaken. Stage 2: footsteps fade. Stage 3: heartbeats go silent. Stage 4: breathing stops. Stage 5: the victim is unmade into the Quiet.
The Seed-Hosts
Its hosts, the Seed-Hosts, are carriers: pale, gaunt figures whose mouths look sewn shut and whose wide eyes are terrified. They seek out sound and smother it, and a Seed-Host may press its sewn mouth to a traveller's and drink the words from their throat.
Reality Muting
At full strength it stills the fundamental forces, every wave and tremor, until the world is a still image with no sound, motion, or life.
The Threat to the Cosmos
Silence Seed is the antithesis of the Primes of Communication and Vibration.
- Verba Prime (Language) is opposed by Silence Seed's Unspoken.
- Zephyr Prime (Motion) is opposed by Silence Seed's Stillness.
- Ignis Prime (Energy) is opposed by Silence Seed's Quenching.
- The Binding Song is opposed by Silence Seed's Silence.
What Memoria and Umbra carry by voice and echo would go mute with it; see their pages.
Its victory is one endless Quiet, the Primes' domains muted along with everything else.
The Horror of the Unheard
It does not kill; it mutes. A mother sees her child's mouth moving and hears nothing. Its victims live on, fully aware, shouting into a world that cannot hear them. A sentry would see the raiders coming and be unable to raise the alarm; a warband's captain would give an order no one received.
The Cascade Failure
The Boundary holds by resonance, and Silence Seed stills it. Once the Boundary no longer rings, the Nothing seeps in through the quiet.
Inhabitants and Followers
The Seed-Hosts
- Description: The pale, sewn-mouthed carriers described above.
- Behaviour: They crowd around anyone noisy until that one too is silent.
The Cult of the Final Quiet
No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.
- Description: Mortals worn down by noise who would take the spreading hush for a promise of peace.
- Beliefs: They would sew their mouths shut, cut out their tongues, and break their instruments, and count speech a sin.
- Decline Trigger: Most would fall into the Quiet; a few would go on as Seed-Hosts, hunted with drums and horns by those still loud.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
Silence Seed's weakness is Noise.
The Power of Sound
Loud, messy, overwhelming sound breaks the Quiet.
- Strategy: Shout, sing, bang. A careful silence fails; a ragged, emotional din can win.
- Artefacts: Bells, drums, and whistles push the Quiet back.
The Resonance of the Primes
- Verba Prime can strengthen speech.
- Zephyr Prime can stir motion and wind.
- Ignis Prime can break the stillness with heat and energy.
- The Unbound Gale can carry wind and sound into the Quiet.
The Boundary
The Primes can drive it back through the Boundary (the Primes' intervention) only while the Boundary still rings.
Role in the Cosmology
Silence Seed is the danger of absolute silence, and a reminder that a voice is how one being reaches another.
