The Chromatic Chord

The Beyonders

Entities from other cosmologies outside the Boundary, whose threat is fast and plain to see: strange physics, a foreign logic spreading across the land like frost across a window. See What Waits Outside.

What Are Beyonders?

The Cosmos is a finite bubble of Order floating in the Nothing. However, the Nothing is not empty; it is the space between infinite bubbles of Order, other cosmologies. Beyonders are entities that originate from these other bubbles.

Each external cosmology operates on a different set of fundamental laws, a different Resonance. When a Beyonder enters our universe, it brings its native laws with it. Because these laws are fundamentally incompatible with our own, its presence causes Reality Glitches. Beyonders do not merely fight; they rewrite stone, flesh, thought, and the deep order of things to match their home reality.

What people know: the Incursions, not the Beyonders. Where one breaks through, people see stone spreading, names forgotten, or sound going out, and they meet its hosts. That such things come from orders beyond the world is a scholar's guess, argued under names that vary by people, faith, and school, and nobody knows for sure what lies beyond (see Knowledge of the Cosmos).

  • They are not evil in the conventional sense. Most mean to correct, save, or complete, by a reckoning simply alien to us.
  • They are not native. They have no history here, no connection to the Primes, and no place in the natural order.
  • They are unstoppable by conventional means.

The Hierarchy of Threat

Beyonders are categorized by the type of reality they impose.

CategoryWhat It ImposesExample EntitiesPrimary Danger
The AbsoluteImposes a single, rigid state on all thingsKrystallis (Order), Omm (Unity of Mind), Xylos (Unity of Body)Loss of individuality; the universe becomes a single, static thing
The ErasersRemoves a fundamental aspect of existenceMnemosyne Null (Memory), Silence Seed (Words), The Static (Signal)Loss of identity, communication, or meaning
The ConsumersSeeks to devour or absorb all matter and energyNyx Vora (Hunger), The Rust Flower (Decay)Total consumption; the universe becomes a void or dust
The MutatorsForces uncontrolled, chaotic changeQzoth (Mutation)Loss of form; biology and physics become unstable nightmares
The SeverersBreaks the connections that hold reality togetherXyphra (Disconnection)Loss of causality; cause and effect cease to exist
The UnformedOften grouped with Beyonders in threat level, but technically primordial; not BeyondersThe Echoing Dark, The Fractured Mirror, The Void Weaver, The Great SlumberLoss of definition; the universe returns to pre-differentiation chaos

How They Operate

Beyonders do not typically march armies. They manifest as Incursions: localized zones where their native laws override local physics.

The Incursion Process

  • Breaching: A Beyonder finds a weak point in the Boundary, often aided by a Cast-Out or a natural flaw.
  • Manifestation: The Beyonder appears as a distortion of reality, such as a field of crystal, a pallor that drains the colour from a place, or a silence that eats sound.
  • Propagation: The Incursion spreads. Nearby reality begins to convert. A forest might turn to crystal under Krystallis, or a city might forget its own name under Mnemosyne Null.
  • Dominance: If unchecked, the Incursion expands until it consumes the local Anchor or threatens the Boundary itself.

The Foreign Physics Effect

When a Beyonder is present, the laws of the Material Plane begin to break down:

  • Krystallis: Geometry becomes absolute. Curves straighten. Angles become perfect. Biology crystallizes.
  • Nyx Vora: Energy is consumed instantly. Fire goes out. Hearts stop. Light is eaten.
  • Qzoth: Flesh mutates uncontrollably. Matter changes state randomly.
  • Omm: Individual minds merge. "I" becomes "We."

What Every Incursion Shares

Each home law is incompatible with the Resonance Principle, so inside any Incursion the same three things fail: magic, life, and thought. Each entity page says only why they fail under that entity.

Every Beyonder also remakes the beings it touches into hosts that carry the Incursion further, and most would draw a mortal cult that works to weaken the Boundary and is in the end swallowed by what it worships. An Incursion that strains the Boundary itself risks the Cascade Failure described in The Outside.

Incursions on Caeldon

Only three Beyonders have ever broken through at Caeldon, and each was driven out: Krystallis in the Krystallis Incursion (c. 352,000-c. 349,000 BR), Mnemosyne Null in the Mnemosyne Null Incursion (c. 132,000-c. 130,000 BR), and Qzoth in the Qzoth Incursion (c. 4,000-c. 3,500 BR). Each left a dead scar where its residue still lingers: the Hanging Vale, the Paling, and the Wrongwood. None of them drew a cult on Caeldon.

The Beyonders List

The Architects of Order

  • Krystallis, the Shattered God: Seeks to freeze the universe into a perfect, static crystal lattice. Weakness: Chaos, Imperfection.
  • Omm, the Unison: Seeks to merge all consciousness into a single, harmonious whole. Weakness: Discord, Individuality.
  • Xylos, the Hive-Mind: Seeks to biologically integrate all life into a single network. Weakness: Discord, Separation.

The Agents of Erasure

  • Mnemosyne Null, the Unwritten: Seeks to erase all memory and history, leaving a blank slate. Weakness: Remembrance, Story.
  • Silence Seed, the Quiet Plague: Seeks to silence every word and voice. Weakness: Noise, Voice.
  • The Static, the White Noise: Seeks to drown all signal in interference, making truth unreadable. Weakness: Clarity, Focus.

The Devourers

  • Nyx Vora, the Star-Eater: Seeks to consume all matter and energy, leaving only the void. Weakness: Abundance, Creation.
  • The Rust Flower: Seeks to accelerate entropy until everything is dust. Weakness: Preservation, Stasis.

The Mutators

  • Qzoth, the Becoming: Seeks to force infinite, uncontrolled mutation on all forms. Weakness: Stability, Form.

The Severers

  • Xyphra, the Unraveller: Seeks to sever all bonds, connections, and causality. Weakness: Bond, Connection.

The Primordial Unformed

Often mistaken for Beyonders because of their existential threat, the Unformed are native to this universe and are not Beyonders:

Defence and Countermeasures

Defeating a Beyonder is not about killing it; it is about repelling its concept.

Resonant Counter-Force

Every Beyonder has a conceptual opposite within our universe. To stop it, one must amplify that opposite.

  • Against Krystallis: Introduce chaos, art, and imperfection.
  • Against Mnemosyne Null: Tell stories, sing songs, and remember names.
  • Against Nyx Vora: Create abundance, light, and life.
  • Against Xyphra: Strengthen bonds, oaths, and connections.

The Primes' Intervention

The Primes, such as Ignis, Aqua, and Terra, are the only beings capable of directly confronting a Beyonder. A plane that repels one is no exception: the planes are the Primes' own currents, and a plane bearing on a Beyonder is its Prime acting through it. They can reinforce the local laws of the universe, pushing the foreign concept back into the Nothing. However, this is costly and rare.

The Boundary Wardens

The Wardens of the Boundary, the Stewards who keep watch there, patrol the Boundary to detect and seal breaches before a Beyonder can fully manifest.

Mortal Agency

Mortals are surprisingly effective against Beyonders because they possess free will, a trait that many Beyonders cannot comprehend. A mortal's ability to choose the wrong path, to be illogical, or to act with irrational emotion can break a Beyonder's perfect order. The heroes the songs keep from the three Incursions on Caeldon are not slayers: they are the burners who walked into the Bloom with torches knowing their own houses were next, and the Floodkeeper reciters who held the river through the nights while the blank stood across the water.

The Relationship with Cast-Outs and Unformed

  • Cast-Outs: Often act as unwitting or willing agents for Beyonders. A Cast-Out who fell because it sought perfect order might be the first to welcome Krystallis.
  • Unformed: The Unformed are the native chaos of this universe.

Role in the Cosmology

Beyonders serve as the ultimate test of the Cosmos's integrity.

  • They prove that the universe is not the only reality.
  • They put the Primes' Resonance under foreign strain and force mortals to defend the value of this specific reality, with all its flaws, chaos, and freedom, against better or purer alternatives.
  • They represent the fear of the unknown made manifest.
