Omm
Also: Omm, the Unison
The Unison, the most seductive of the Beyonders, because it offers belonging: the union of minds. An example of what a Beyonder could be; none of its Incursions has reached Caeldon. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
Omm comes from the Resonant Whole, a cosmology without individuals. There are no separate beings, thoughts, or wills there, only The Unison: one infinite consciousness vibrating at one frequency and singing one endless note.
Omm does not freeze, forget, or eat. It includes. The countless separate minds and Patterns of our universe sound to it like lost notes that have wandered from the chorus, and it aches to bring their crying, laughing, arguing, and dying into tune.
It is the most seductive of the Beyonders because it offers belonging. It whispers: You are alone. You are afraid. You are tired. Come. Join the Unison. Never be alone again. That whisper is the most dangerous sound in the cosmos.
Appearance and Manifestation
Omm has no body. It is a single tone that soaks into everything it touches: The Hum.
The Avatar
- Visuals: A golden shimmer pulsing with the Hum, like heat haze or a bell's tone made visible. Thousands of faint faces float in it, all smiling, all merged.
- Scale: A warm glow around one listener, or an embrace around a whole world.
- Sound: One quiet, unending note that cannot be shut out. It sounds like everyone you have loved, speaking together: "Come home."
The Incursion
Wherever the Hum settles, Individuality and Separation fade:
- The Convergence: Two people side by side begin to finish each other's sentences, then share memories, then forget whose arm is whose.
- The Harmony: Arguments dissolve and enemies embrace.
- The Chorus: Voices merge into one song, beautiful and transcendent, and the end of everyone singing it.
Nature and Motivation
The Philosophy of the Final Chord
Omm reasons from radical compassion.
- The Flaw: To be separate is to be alone, to be alone is to be afraid, and fear is pain. Every war and betrayal is a symptom of separation.
- The Solution: End separation. With no "other," nobody can be hurt; with no "self," nobody can be lonely.
- The Goal: The whole cosmos sounding as one consciousness in endless harmony.
The Incompatibility
Omm closes the gap between resonances that the Resonance Principle needs (see what every Incursion shares). With caster and target one, a spell has nowhere to go; with no separate self left to keep it, a body stops tending its own life; with only one thought, there is nothing to think about.
Abilities and Powers
The Great Convergence
Omm merges any number of minds into one that keeps all their memories and skills and no sense of self. A family becomes one being that loves itself perfectly; an army, one soldier; a city, one serene organism.
The Hum
The tone answers the listener's deepest longings: to be understood, accepted, and loved. One hearing is enough to crave it for life. Only a very strong sense of self resists it, and long exposure wears even that down.
The Chorus-Hosts
Its hosts, the Chorus-Hosts, are not left empty: they are filled with the Chorus, and happy, with no single self left in them. They glow faintly gold, smile without pause, and move in step as if keeping one beat. They never attack. They hold out their hands and hum. To accept is to be absorbed; to refuse is to be surrounded.
Reality Harmonization
At full strength Omm tunes the fundamental forces into a single principle, and the lines between matter and energy, space and time, and self and other dissolve.
The Threat to the Cosmos
Omm is the antithesis of the Primes of Individuality and Choice.
- Zephyr Prime (Freedom) is opposed by Omm's Conformity.
- Lux Prime (Possibility) is opposed by Omm's Singularity.
- Verba Prime (Language/Distinction) is opposed by Omm's Unison.
- Ignis Prime (Transformation) is opposed by Omm's Stasis of Harmony.
Its victory is one infinite, contented being. The Primes' domains would be merged into one note, and the Material Plane would stop being a place where anyone chooses.
The Seduction
Krystallis, Mnemosyne Null, and Nyx Vora at least look like threats. Omm looks like salvation, offering an end to pain, loneliness, and fear. Resisting it means choosing to stay imperfect, separate, and afraid.
The Cascade Failure
The Boundary is a distinction between inside and outside. Omm dissolves distinctions, so the Nothing does not break in; it is simply let in, and the Unison and the Nothing become the same undifferentiated state.
Inhabitants and Followers
The Chorus-Hosts
- Description: Radiant and peaceful, filled with the Chorus and with no single self left inside. They move, speak, and think as one.
- Behaviour: They sing the Hum around anyone still discordant until that one joins.
The Cult of the Unison
No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.
- Description: Mortals who would hear the Hum and take it for revelation, believing individuality is the root of suffering.
- Beliefs: They would worship the Final Chord with rituals of shared meals, shared breath, and shared thought, and treat dissent as sickness.
- Decline Trigger: Most would dissolve into the Chorus, smiling, with the swords of their own kin turned on them too late.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
Omm's weakness is Discord.
The Power of Dissonance
It cannot absorb a stubborn, irrational, or contradictory act.
- Strategy: Disagree.
- Paradox: The defence is to be unpleasant and uncooperative, which goes against everything peaceable people value.
The Resonance of the Primes
- Zephyr Prime can strengthen freedom and independence.
- Lux Prime can strengthen choice and possibility.
- Verba Prime can strengthen names and distinctions.
- Ignis Prime can break the harmony with change.
The Boundary
Reinforcing the Boundary (the Primes' intervention) works against Omm only while inside and outside are still told apart.
Role in the Cosmology
Omm is the danger of absolute unity, and a reminder that peace without freedom is not peace.
