The Chromatic Chord

The Grey Mist

The face of the Unformed closest to the undivided first state, which takes away contrast until things are not invisible, only indistinguishable. See What Waits Outside.

Overview

Of all the faces of the Unformed, the Grey Mist, the one it turns against boundaries, keeps closest to the undivided first state, before one thing was told from another. It is the absence of distinction itself.

It belongs to the age before any line was drawn, when land and sea were one substance, self and other one breath, here and there one place. It is not grey as a colour between black and white; it is the state in which black and white have not yet been separated.

It is "Grey" because grey is what all colours make when mixed until none means anything, and "Mist" because mist is air that can no longer tell itself from the ground. Where it lies, the space between things turns out never to have been there.

Appearance and Manifestation

Without an edge between thing and not-thing there can be no form, and it comes as a dissolution of edges.

The Visual

  • Visuals: Not fog but a loss of contrast.
  • Scale: A corner where walls seem to melt into the floor, or a whole landscape gone one featureless grey.

The Sound

  • Sound: Sounds run together. A conversation becomes a murmur, a scream and a whisper the same tone.
  • The Echo: A low drone of every pitch merged into one, the sound of grey.

The Feeling

  • Touch: A gentle softening of your edges. You cannot tell where your skin stops and the air starts.
  • Thought: Where you end and the room begins stops mattering. "Friend" and "enemy," "home" and "away" run together.

Nature and Motivation

The Nature of the Unformed

The indifference of the Unformed is plainest here: division does not offend the Mist, it simply does not hold in it.

The Motivation: The Great Blurring

What drives it is to erase the line: between inside and outside a wall, between self and other in a person, between right and wrong in a quarrel. The lonely sometimes speak of it as an end to separation; the Mist knows nothing of that, and edges soften in it as they soften in fog.

Abilities and Powers

The Dissolution of Edges

It erases the boundary between any two things.

  • Effect: A wall goes permeable, then transparent, then irrelevant. A border between realms becomes a suggestion, then a memory.
  • Cost: The victim can no longer tell themselves from their surroundings, neither one thing nor another.

The Blend Field

In its field every category collapses into a single "Is." A person cannot tell whether they are on their feet or sitting, awake or asleep.

  • Transmission: The Blend travels through the senses of those inside it, the way Unformed fields do.
  • Its victims: Beasts and people whose edges have run into the ground and air around them are the Mist-Merged.

The Memory of Oneness

It can show a being the state before boundaries.

  • Effect: The person feels their edges soften until nothing about them stands out from what surrounds them: no pain, no joy, no line between self and other.
  • Effect: They remain aware of the blur but cannot find their own edge again.

The Homogenizing Tide

At full strength it would melt every edge at once: between the Primes, across the Material Plane, and in the Boundary.

The Threat to the Cosmos

It ends difference.

  • To Terra Prime: It dissolves the Iron Backbone's walls into one surface.
  • To Verba Prime: It turns the Binding Song into a murmur where no name stands apart.
  • To Lux Prime: It greys the Shifting Path until no branch can be told from another.
  • To the Material Plane: Neighbours stop knowing where one household ends and the next begins, and the elders can no longer tell the guilty from the wronged.

The Cascade Failure

At the Boundary it blurs "Inside" into "Outside" (see the cascade failure).

Relationships

With the Primes

The Grey Mist is kin to the Primes in the plainest way: it is the substrate they differentiated from, still undivided. It is their shadow, potential that never settled into a distinct principle, and it presses hardest on the Primes that depend on clear edges.

  • Terra Prime: The Mist is the earth before the mountains were raised, the clay before the sculptor's hands: Terra's matter with none of Terra's structure.
  • Verba Prime: The Mist is the blur between two words before either had a meaning of its own. It dissolves exactly the distinctions Verba's names depend on.
  • Lux Prime: The Mist is the twilight that is neither day nor night, the dusk that swallows both sun and shadow. Lux's light passes into it and reveals nothing.
  • Umbra Prime: Left with no edge to cast a shadow on; see its page.

With the Beyonders

The Beyonders are wary of it; in the Mist their foreign order would simply blend into everything else.

With the Cast-Outs

A Cast-Out lives by holding one concept apart from all others, and the Mist would blend it back in (see the overview).

With Other Unformed

The Mist lies close to the Echoing Dark: both undo definition, but the Dark removes the label while the Mist removes the difference that needed one. It runs counter to the Fractured Mirror, which multiplies points of view where the Mist melts them into none; by opposite roads, both end the single self. The Void Weaver works the other way again; see its page.

Encounters and Legends

The City Without Walls

A city weary of walls and borders opened its gates when the Mist rolled in. The walls went first, then the doors, then the floors, then the skins. When the Mist moved on, a grey blur remained where the city had been, wall fading into street and street into citizen, with no edge left to say where one ended.

The Lover's Blend

Two lovers parted by a river saw the far bank blur one dawn and each walked into the Mist to meet the other. The river went, then the banks, then the line between them. Their edges ran together until neither could tell where one stopped and the other began, and they could no longer feel the joy of reaching across a distance. Love needs a boundary to cross.

The Last Edge

Those pulled out of the Blend remember a razor-thin line in the grey that they could not reach; whether it is the first boundary ever drawn, as a few have guessed, nobody can say.

The Hunter's Stag

A beast-hunter tracked a wounded stag into a fog that had no edges, and saw the stag fade into the hillside it stood on. Then his own hand ran into his bow. His brothers found him by the rope he had tied to a thorn at the edge, cut a mark on each of his palms so that he could feel where he ended, and dragged him out. He hunted for thirty years after, and never again followed quarry into grey.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

The Power of Distinction

It cannot blur someone who says "this is me and that is not" and keeps saying it.

  • Strategy: Accept that the self needs a border, and bear the loneliness that comes with it.

The Power of Contrast

A black mark on a white page, a loud voice in a quiet room, a single "no" in a chorus of agreement: every sharp contrast pushes the Mist back.

  • Strategy: Stand out. Make the edge visible and keep it there.

The Power of the Primes

Through the Resonance of Distinction the Primes keep it at bay: Terra Prime in boundaries and structure, Verba Prime in names and categories, Lux Prime in clarity and contrast.

Role in the Cosmology

The Grey Mist is the ghost of the undivided: the reminder that boundaries are what let anything exist, and what let one thing love another.
