The Silent Screamer

The Cast-Out of Verba that was the Liberator of Tongues, keeper of the cathartic cry, until it grew terrified of what speech does and decided to stop the voice. See What Waits Outside.

Overview

The Silent Screamer is a Cast-Out, a fallen Steward of Verba Prime. As the Liberator of Tongues, a Steward bound to the Binding Song, it kept the cathartic cry: it saw that grief could be wept, rage shouted, and secrets confessed. Its office was release and unburdening.

It grew terrified of what speech does: wars started by words, hearts broken by confessions, lives ruined by truths said too loudly. It decided to stop the voice, sure that pain never spoken would vanish and sins never confessed would never have been. It told a grieving mother that her child would live if she held back her tears. It slid a silver gag into a rebel's mouth before the revolution began. It wove a silence over a city that pressed a thousand screams into one suffocating hum. It meant peace. A peace built on silence is a tomb.

Appearance and Manifestation

The True Form

Tall and emaciated in grey robes that soak up light and sound. Its stretched, pale face has a mouth crudely sewn shut with thick black thread like dried blood, the stitches pulsing violet. Its eyes bulge with terror and ecstasy at once, as if screaming inside with its whole being.

The Muffling Trail

Around it the air thickens like water and sound dulls as if wrapped in cotton. The hush is not peaceful but pressurized, the air holding its breath before a burst.

The Voice

A soundless psychic scream that lands on the mind like a blow, many voices howling one word: "Hush. Hush. Hush." It drowns out the listener's thoughts.

Nature and Motivation

The Wound

Terror of the spoken word. It saw what words can wreck and set out to stop them, to spare the pain of confession, to force quiet on the chaos of expression. It does not see that unspoken pain turns to poison, held rage to violence, and that a self needs a voice to exist.

The Compulsion

It must silence everything: the crying child's mouth stitched, the shouting mob gagged, the lover's lips sealed before a confession.

The Paradox

Pressed inward, pain grows. The child who cannot cry sinks into despair, the mob that cannot shout turns violent, the lover who cannot confess turns bitter. At last what is held in bursts the silence apart in madness. Only the scream remains.

Abilities and Powers

The Stitch of Silence

One touch seals a being's voice. The vocal cords lock and the tongue goes heavy; thought remains.

  • Cost: Everything the victim thinks stays locked inside them.

The Muffling Field

A field of absolute suppression: no sound, no raised voice, not even a drawn blade's ring.

  • Effect: Creatures fight to make any noise at all, and some break under the weight of what they cannot let out.

The Inner Scream

It can drive a target to re-live their worst memory or deepest regret in an instant, with no way to cry out.

  • Effect: The mute ordeal often ends in collapse or catatonia.

The Gag of Shame

It can bind a secret to a target's Pattern, a confession that cannot be made and grows heavier every day, pressing on the chest.

  • Effect: Some sufferers are crushed by the weight of their own silence.

The Threat to the Cosmos

The Screamer strangles speech, testimony, and voice more slowly than any Beyonder breaks a world.

  • To Verba Prime: It is the Silence made portable: the quiet that chokes and kills.
  • To the Material Plane: Communities touched by it stop talking things through; no one says what they feel, and leaders cannot rally anyone.
  • To the Silence: It draws on the Silence's void, and the hush it leaves behind is the plane's own.

Relationships

With Verba Prime

Verba's law is that living truth needs speech and that silence must never become the only authority; the Screamer cannot accept it. Silence belongs in every song, but the Screamer is silence made sovereign, the stillness the Binding Song would collapse into if speech ceased, and Verba's current cannot take that back without muting part of itself.

With Umbra Prime

Its suppression of expression is anathema to Umbra, which grants the dead their silence; see its page.

With the Silence

It is caught in a loop of hatred and dependence with the Silence: it recoils from the voiceless void, feeds on its quiet, and turns that power outward as the scream.

With Mortals

It comes to those raw with grief or anger as a quiet, soothing shade. "Let me take the pain away. Let me silence the noise. You will be safe." The quiet it gives is a prison.

With Other Cast-Outs

Of the other Cast-Outs, it admires the Hollow King, which also silences the self, with a crown where the Screamer uses a stitch. The Flesh Weaver horrifies it, a violator of bodies where it violates voices. The Shadow Stitcher's need for connection means nothing to it.

Encounters and Legends

The City of Whispers

A city sick of its own clamour let the Screamer quiet it. Mouths were stitched and throats gagged; no one argued or fought or wept, and no one sang or loved. The citizens drifted like ghosts with terror in their eyes. The silence held after the Screamer left.

The Rebel's Gag

A rebel on the eve of revolt let the Screamer spare him the pain of failure. It gagged him. His followers could not hear him, the revolt failed, and he died with his cry still in his throat.

The Last Stitch

The first stitch it ever sewed, a golden thread from the first mouth it closed, is still lodged inside it; it believes that stitch is its redemption.

The Unblown Horn

Raiders came over the hill at dusk to a village the Screamer had quieted. The watchman saw them and could not blow his horn; the mothers saw them and could not scream; the houses burned in silence. Only one old keening-woman, who had sung at every burial in the valley for forty years, found her voice, and her dirge woke the next village in time to bar its gate. Valley folk still keen aloud at a deathbed, and say it is for her.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

The Power of Voice

Anyone ready to speak their truth, shout their rage, or weep their grief is beyond its stitch.

  • Strategy: Speak. Words hurt, and they also heal.

The Power of Expression

A song sung with feeling, a grief keened aloud, a confession finally made: each weakens it.

  • Strategy: Make noise. Answer its hush with a voice.

The Power of Verba Prime

Verba has nothing to seize in the Silent Screamer: no word, no name spoken aloud, only the absence of one. Every voice raised near it pushes it back a little, and its hold breaks where people speak though it costs them. The scribes and singers who resist it hold that speech must be chosen, not merely inherited.

Role in the Cosmology

The Silent Screamer is the ghost of the muted cry: silence without consent, and the right to be heard that it denies.
