Mnemosyne Null
Also: Mnemosyne Null, the Unwritten
The Unwritten, a Beyonder from a cosmology with no memory, which does not kill but un-writes: colour, then detail, then meaning, then a person's name and language. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
Mnemosyne Null comes from a cosmology with no memory at all. Nothing there is recorded, learned, or recalled; every moment starts fresh, and every being is born as blank as an unused page.
It does not kill; it un-writes. To Mnemosyne Null, the accumulated past (experience, history, identity, consequence) is a sickness that spoils the present, and it means to cure our universe by stripping that past away until only a hollow, endless now remains. Where Krystallis would freeze the world, Mnemosyne Null would wash it clean of every story ever told.
It has reached Caeldon once. In the Mnemosyne Null Incursion (c. 132,000-c. 130,000 BR) it unwrote an archive river city until the city forgot its name, and was turned back at the river; the pale country it left is the Paling.
Appearance and Manifestation
Mnemosyne Null is the absence of form. It arrives as a blank: a pallor spreading over a place, draining colour, then detail, then meaning, and swallowing information as well as light.
The Avatar
- Visuals: A spreading blankness with no edge or body that drinks detail.
- Scale: A colourless patch in a lane, or a pallor that covers a city, a continent, or a plane.
- Sound: None, not even the ringing in one's own ears.
The Incursion
Wherever it touches, Causality and Memory give way:
- The Unwriting: Memories are deleted from reality, not merely forgotten.
- The Blank Slate: Objects lose their history.
- The Unsaying: The blank absorbs the vibration of the world, and voices go nowhere.
Nature and Motivation
The Philosophy of the Blank Slate
Mnemosyne Null reasons from radical purity.
- The Flaw: History is a chain binding beings to old mistakes, wounds, and selves.
- The Solution: Remove the past, and every being is free to meet the present unburdened.
- The Goal: Eternal forgetting: a cosmos where nothing is remembered, nothing is learned, and nothing matters.
The Incompatibility
This universe's Resonance leans on memory: the Eternal Record, the Whispering Trace, the Binding Song. Mnemosyne Null cuts those threads (see what every Incursion shares). Spells lose the remembered formula, bodies lose their cellular and inherited memory, and a mind that cannot recall cannot compare.
Abilities and Powers
The Great Unwriting
It erases what a thing means while leaving the thing in place: a legendary hero becomes a nameless peasant, a kingdom a forgotten ruin, a god a myth nobody tells.
The Spreading Blank
The blank takes memory in stages:
- Stage 1: Recent memories (this morning's meal).
- Stage 2: Personal identity (name, family).
- Stage 3: Skills and knowledge (speech, walking).
- Stage 4: Self-awareness.
- Stage 5: Total erasure. The victim ceases to be.
The Blank Hosts
Its hosts, the Blank Hosts, keep their bodies and strength and nothing else: no personality, no memory, no will, and as the blank works on, the body's own detail drains away too. They carry the blank to others. Now and then one still walks out of the Paling, someone who stayed too long, and goes looking for whoever on the edge still remembers.
Reality Reset
At full strength it resets a stretch of time to zero. An event nobody remembers stops having happened, and reality closes over the gap.
The Threat to the Cosmos
Mnemosyne Null is the antithesis of the Primes of Memory and Identity.
- Memoria Prime (Memory/History) is opposed most directly of all by Mnemosyne Null's Erasure.
- Verba Prime (Language/Memory) is opposed by Mnemosyne Null's Unsaying.
- Umbra Prime (Death/Remnant) is opposed by Mnemosyne Null's Oblivion.
- Terra Prime (Structure/History) is opposed by Mnemosyne Null's Blankness.
- Lux Prime (Possibility) is opposed by Mnemosyne Null's Nullity.
Its victory would be a silent, blank void in which even the Primes' domains are forgotten and no story remains to be told.
The Cascade Failure
Mnemosyne Null can erase the idea of the Boundary. A universe that forgets it has an edge no longer holds one, and the Nothing walks in.
Inhabitants and Followers
The Blank Hosts
- Description: The bodies they had, drained of detail: faces smoothed towards featureless, colour faded to nothing, eyes and mouths gone blank. They do not speak or think; they simply are.
- Behaviour: They seek out anyone still remembering and erase them.
The Cult of the Blank Slate
No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.
- Description: Mortals haunted by their past who would hear in the spreading pallor a promise of release from it.
- Beliefs: They would worship the "Final Blank" and work rituals that wear down the world's memory.
- Decline Trigger: Most would be emptied into Blank Hosts.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
Mnemosyne Null gives way before memory.
The Power of Remembrance
A vivid, emotional memory is something it cannot absorb.
- Strategy: Recall names, loved ones, history, and purpose.
- Artefacts: A locket, a diary, or a song that holds strong memories pushes the blank back.
The Resonance of the Primes
- Memoria Prime can reinforce the record itself, the stories and names that Null would erase.
- Verba Prime steadies names and the words that carry them.
- Umbra Prime holds fast what the dead leave behind.
- Terra Prime keeps the history written into structure.
The Boundary
The Boundary holds it the way it holds every Beyonder (see the Primes' intervention), as long as the Boundary is still remembered.
Role in the Cosmology
Mnemosyne Null is the danger of absolute forgetting, and the proof that identity is built of memory.
