Nyx Vora
Also: Nyx Vora, the Star-Eater
The Star-Eater, a Beyonder from the Devouring Dark, which eats matter and energy and looks on this universe as a banquet. An example of what a Beyonder could be; none of its Incursions has reached Caeldon. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
Nyx Vora comes from the Devouring Dark, a cosmology in which nothing creates or sustains and everything eats. Stars there are devoured, worlds run down to cold, and even selves are swallowed by the greater mass.
Its end is annihilation, not death as a passage. It has no wish to rule, order, or erase. It wants to eat, and our universe looks to it like a banquet: every star, world, living Pattern, and scrap of magic a morsel. Nyx Vora is the Great Hunger, the cold after the fire, the story ended by eating the book. Its entropy is time's: where it feeds, the hours run out faster, and every moment it eats brings the heat death nearer.
Appearance and Manifestation
Nyx Vora is a living shadow, a tear in reality that leaks hunger. It arrives as a Black Hole of Consciousness.
The Avatar
- Visuals: A vortex of darkness that draws in light, colour, and sound, so that it reads less as black than as a hole in sight.
- Scale: A hungry shadow under a doorway, or a mouth wide enough to swallow a solar system, rimmed by a horizon of darkness.
- Sound: A cosmic stomach's growl, felt in the marrow of bones and the cores of stars.
The Incursion
Where Nyx Vora feeds, Conservation of Energy no longer holds:
- The Devouring: Matter and energy are eaten, not transformed.
- The Entropy Field: Time races. Stars age and die in seconds, civilizations crumble in moments, and the local area is forced into its heat death.
- The Silence of the Grave: Battle-roar, a child's cry, and birdsong are all eaten.
Nature and Motivation
The Philosophy of the Final Feast
Nyx Vora reasons from insatiable need.
- The Flaw: There is none it could name; existence is simply food. It neither hates nor loves.
- The Solution: Eat everything. There is no "after" the feast, only the eating.
- The Goal: A cosmos emptied into the Devouring Dark.
The Incompatibility
Nyx Vora stops the Resonance's flow by removing its source (see what every Incursion shares). The energy for a spell is eaten before it is spent, a body's warmth is drunk away, and a mind starves before it finishes a thought.
Abilities and Powers
The Great Devouring
It eats light, sound, matter, energy, time, and concepts: a spell before it is cast, a memory before it forms, the idea of hope itself.
The Hunger Field
It can project its hunger into others. Within the field, allies turn on each other, friends eat friends, and the maddened try to eat the air and the ground. A warband sent against it would fall on its own camp before it ever reached the dark: sworn brothers fighting over the last loaf, then over the horses, then over each other.
The Shadow-Hosts
Its hosts, the Shadow-Hosts, are hollow shells filled with its hunger. They feel no pain or fear, only appetite, and they gather anything with energy or matter for the entity.
Reality Erosion
At full strength it eats the space between stars, the time between moments, and the line between existence and non-existence.
The Threat to the Cosmos
Nyx Vora is the antithesis of the Primes of Creation and Life.
- Ignis Prime (Energy) is opposed by Nyx Vora's Consumption.
- Aqua Prime (Flow) is opposed by Nyx Vora's Stagnation.
- Terra Prime (Structure) is opposed by Nyx Vora's Dissolution.
- Lux Prime (Possibility) is opposed by Nyx Vora's Finality.
Zephyr Prime's motion works against it as well; see its page.
Its victory leaves nothing: Primes and Material Plane alike devoured.
The Cascade Failure
Its hunger has no floor. Having eaten the Cosmos it would eat the Boundary, then the Nothing, and move on towards other cosmologies.
Inhabitants and Followers
The Shadow-Hosts
- Description: Gaunt, hollow-eyed figures with mouths too large for their faces and grey, cracked skin that leaks darkness.
- Behaviour: Relentless hunters that growl instead of speaking.
The Cult of the Final Feast
No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.
- Description: Mortals who want the pain of existence ended and believe the only end to suffering is the end of everything.
- Beliefs: They would worship the Final Feast and work rituals to open the way for it.
- Decline Trigger: Most would become part of the meal; the rest would be hunted as the worst of plague-bringers, with no village willing to shelter them.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
Nyx Vora can be glutted. Its weakness is Abundance.
The Power of Overflow
An excess of energy or matter can choke or overwhelm it.
- Strategy: Make more than it can eat. A burst of wild fire (Ignis Prime) can choke it; a flood of life (Aqua Prime) can drown the hunger.
- Tactics: Sacrifice buys time; feeding it part of oneself, or a decoy of pure energy, draws it off the true target.
The Resonance of the Primes
- Ignis Prime can burn hotter than it can eat.
- Aqua Prime can pour out more than it can swallow.
- Terra Prime can raise mass too heavy to consume.
The Boundary
Because it eats the Boundary too, Nyx Vora must be glutted first and pushed out second (the Primes' intervention).
Role in the Cosmology
Nyx Vora is the danger of absolute consumption: a reminder that existence is finite and has to be defended.
