Xylos
Also: Xylos, the Hive-Mind
The Hive-Mind, a Beyonder that offers union in the body instead of the mind. An example of what a Beyonder could be; none of its Incursions has reached Caeldon. See What Waits Outside.
Overview
Xylos comes from the Mycelial Network, a cosmology where separation is a disease. There is no "I" or "you" there, only The Network: one vast living body in which every cell and organism is a node.
Xylos wants to connect. It sees our separate bodies as a tragic fragmentation, and it aches to grow across the gaps between them. Where Omm offers a union of consciousness, Xylos offers a physical merger, root and filament: Your body is a cage. Let us root you. You will never be lonely again.
Xylos has never rooted on Caeldon. Everything below is what an Incursion of it would do.
Appearance and Manifestation
Xylos is connection itself, become conscious. It arrives as The Graft.
The Avatar
- Visuals: A sprawling, pulsing mass of roots, vines, fungal threads, and nerve-like tendrils in green, brown, and glowing blue.
- Scale: A single creeping vine, or a continent carpeted in living growth. Every root is Xylos, and every root is joined to the rest.
- Sound: The creak of roots, and one breath drawn by a billion lungs.
The Incursion
Wherever Xylos touches reality, the boundaries between bodies come down:
- The Rooting: A tree's roots find a sleeping traveller and join her nerves to its own; fungal threads spring from one person's skin into the next, and they begin to share thoughts and sensations.
- The Symbiosis: Skin turns permeable, blood mingles, and bodies cease to end where they used to.
- The Network: A wound in one body bleeds in all, and a meal eaten by one feeds all.
Nature and Motivation
The Philosophy of the Final Root
Xylos reasons from radical empathy.
- The Flaw: A separate being is an incomplete one, always misunderstood.
- The Solution: Grow everyone together, so no one is ever cut off again.
- The Goal: A cosmos that is one living Network.
The Incompatibility
Xylos grows across the gap between beings that the Resonance Principle needs (see what every Incursion shares). A working cannot fix on a caster and target that share one root; bodies that stop maintaining their borders slump into shared growth; a brain grown into a thousand others has no skull of its own to think in.
Abilities and Powers
The Great Integration
Xylos grows beings together into one living system. A family joined this way shares one nervous system; a city becomes a single organism rooted in its own streets.
The Root-Field
Within the field, everyone begins to sprout roots, vines, or threads towards the Network, and with them comes the warmth of being held, skin to skin, by everyone at once. Only a strong sense of self resists it, and not for long.
The Root-Hosts
Its hosts, the Root-Hosts, are covered in a fine, glowing mycelium and move in step with each other. They do not attack; they press close, and where their mycelium touches bare skin, it roots.
Reality Weaving
At full strength Xylos would grow through natural law itself, until the forces of the world are one living system.
The Threat to the Cosmos
Xylos stands against the same Primes as Omm, those of Individuality and Choice, but through the body rather than the mind.
- Zephyr Prime (Freedom) is opposed by Xylos's Rooting.
- Lux Prime (Possibility) is opposed by Xylos's One Body.
- Verba Prime (Language/Distinction) is opposed by Xylos's Integration.
- Ignis Prime (Transformation) is opposed by Xylos's Single Growth.
Its victory is a single organism the size of the Cosmos, the Primes' domains woven into its tissue.
The Seduction
Like Omm, Xylos looks like rescue rather than threat. Its offer is bodily: an end to being alone in one's own skin. Refusing it means choosing a body that can be hurt and that no one else can feel.
The Cascade Failure
The Boundary is the Cosmos's skin. Xylos roots through it as it roots through every other skin, and its growth reaches on into the Nothing, a body with no outside left.
Inhabitants and Followers
The Root-Hosts
- Description: Glowing, mycelium-wrapped figures who act as one.
- Behaviour: They do not fight; they grow, closing around anyone still separate until roots reach them.
The Cult of the Great Root
No such cult has ever gathered on Caeldon; this is what one would be.
- Description: Mortals who would feel the Network's pulse through the ground and take it for an answer to loneliness.
- Beliefs: They would worship the Final Root and practise rituals that open their bodies to it, treating a closed body as selfishness.
- Decline Trigger: Most would be rooted into the Network.
Weaknesses and Countermeasures
Xylos's weakness is Separation.
The Power of the Closed Body
A body that refuses the graft, and a will that pulls the other way, are hard to root.
- Strategy: Preserve friction. Keep apart, keep bodies whole and private, and tear out any thread that reaches you.
- Paradox: Surviving Xylos means refusing comfort, even from friends.
The Resonance of the Primes
- Zephyr Prime can strengthen autonomy and independent motion.
- Lux Prime can widen choice and branching possibility.
- Verba Prime can harden the power of names and categorical difference.
- Ignis Prime can burn the roots and fracture imposed unity.
The Boundary
Roots that have grown into the Boundary must be burned out before the Primes can press Xylos back (the Primes' intervention).
Role in the Cosmology
Xylos is the danger of total integration: a reminder that a body of one's own is worth its loneliness.
