The Fractured Mirror

The face of the Unformed with too much definition rather than too little, showing every version of a person at once; it cannot split someone who chooses one self. See What Waits Outside.

Overview

The Fractured Mirror is the face the Unformed shows against a single self. It is not a foreign invader like the Beyonders, nor a fallen Steward like the Cast-Outs, but the universe as it was before it settled on one reality. Where the Echoing Dark takes definition away, the Mirror has too much of it: every version at once.

It is the glass before polishing, a million jagged shards each showing a different truth. It is not madness as a loss of sanity but too many sanities at once, the absence of a single, coherent self.

It is called "Fractured" because it is the Mirror of the Unchosen: every possible you and every possible world, all present, none able to be the only one.

Appearance and Manifestation

A form would need one point of view; instead it appears as a multiplication of reality.

The Visual

  • Visuals: A shimmering field where the air seems made of broken glass.
  • Scale: A puddle showing a different sky, or a whole city turned kaleidoscope.

The Sound

  • Sound: A thousand voices laid over each other, your mother's, your enemy's, your own future voice, all saying different true things.
  • The Echo: A cracking, like countless panes shattering again and again.

The Feeling

  • Touch: Hot, cold, wet, dry, sharp and soft at once, as if touching many surfaces in one place.
  • Thought: You reach for your name and hear a thousand; you picture your face and see a thousand.

Nature and Motivation

The Nature of the Unformed

It holds no grudge. It is what is left when the choice of one reality over the others fails to hold.

The Motivation: The Great Shattering

Its one compulsion is to break the one into many: a person into a million lives, an oath into a million meanings each kept and broken, a moment into a million simultaneous timelines.

Abilities and Powers

The Shattering Gaze

It splits a being into countless versions of themselves.

  • Effect: Each version remembers differently and wants something different. They are all the same person and cannot agree on who that is.
  • Cost: The victim lives on as a chorus of selves, none of which can lead.

The Kaleidoscope Field

Inside its field every possibility is true together. A person is alive and dead; a sword cuts and heals in one stroke.

  • Transmission: The Kaleidoscope rides chiefly on the thoughts of those inside it, like any Unformed field.

The Reflection of the Unchosen

It can trap someone in a life they never lived.

  • Effect: The person is replaced by a reflection who made other choices, and that reflection is now real.
  • Effect: The original watches from inside the glass while the reflection lives their life.

The Prism Tide

At full strength it would split everything into its versions at once, the Primes and the Boundary included, until no single truth held anywhere.

The Threat to the Cosmos

It ends the one, not the many.

  • To Umbra Prime: It is the reflection with no face, eating at the Whispering Trace.
  • To Lux Prime: It is the prism that splits the Shifting Path into contradictions.
  • To the Material Plane: A town touched by it holds a dozen incompatible memories of its own founding, and a council splits into as many factions as it has members.

The Cascade Failure

Its gravest harm is to split "Inside" and "Outside" into endless contradictory versions (see the cascade failure).

Relationships

With the Primes

The Primes and the Fractured Mirror come from the same raw substrate. Where each Prime settled into one principle, the Mirror is the potential that never settled into one of anything: their shadow, splintered.

  • Umbra Prime: The Mirror is the reflection that has no face.
  • Lux Prime: The Mirror is the light that has no source. Its endless refractions are the direct undoing of Lux's single, clarifying beam.
  • Verba Prime: The Mirror is the word that has no meaning, syntax without sense. It lies so close to Verba that Verba's grammar can be bent into its contradictions.
  • Imago Prime: The Mirror is the self before it settled into one shape. Imago gathers fragments into a whole; the Mirror breaks the whole back into fragments.
  • Aion Prime: The Mirror is the moment before it chose one future. Aion carries a single sequence, and the Mirror splits it into many that cannot all be true.

With the Beyonders

The Beyonders are wary of it: a single alien order shattered into a million versions is no order at all.

With the Cast-Outs

To a Cast-Out, fixed on one perfected idea, the Mirror is the worst face of the Unformed: it would split that idea into all its rivals.

Encounters and Legends

The City of a Million Faces

A city struck by a plague of identity saw its own faces multiplied in the Mirror and gazed willingly, hoping to see their true selves. Every citizen, every building and every oath became a million versions. The city outlived the Mirror's passing, but never again agreed on what it was.

The King's Reflection

A king found the Mirror in a disused gallery and took its glinting for a promise to show him his true self. He looked too long. Each of his versions gave a different order, and his war-captains could follow none.

The Last Shard

Some brought back from the Kaleidoscope tell of one unbroken shard at its heart; the rare scholar who gathers such accounts calls it the first reflection ever made.

The Delver's Glass

A ruin-delver went down into a hall of old mirrors beneath an elder ruin and came up with a jewelled glass worth a lord's ransom. His family swears the man who came up is not the man who went down. He knows things the other never learned and has forgotten his children's names. His wife will not sell the glass and will not let it be broken, in case her husband is still inside it, watching.

Weaknesses and Countermeasures

The Power of Unity

It cannot split someone who chooses to be one person and holds to it.

  • Strategy: Pick one self, one story, one choice, and let the other versions go.

The Power of Focus

A single decision made firmly is something the Mirror cannot multiply.

  • Strategy: Fix on one thing, a name, a task, a person beside you, and do not look at the reflections.

The Power of the Primes

The Primes answer it through the Resonance of Unity: Umbra Prime in the self and its reflection, Lux Prime in the light and its source, Verba Prime in the word and its meaning.

Role in the Cosmology

The Fractured Mirror is the ghost of the unchosen: the reminder that to be anything, a thing must first be one thing.
