Unspoken
The beings of the Silence that have lost their names and selves, among them the Void-Stalkers and the Wordless.
Overview
The Unspoken are the beings of the Silence that have lost their names and identities: shadows of whatever they once were, drifting beside the Hollows. The name covers former travellers who repeat what they no longer understand, the Void-Stalkers that feed on what meaning a traveller has left, and the Wordless, which have no form at all.
Appearance
They have little in common to look at, except the plane's grey-white and a vagueness about the edges, as if they were drawn in chalk and half wiped away. The ones that keep a shape keep it badly.
Habitat and Range
They wander the stone plains of the Silence, and gather, if anything there gathers, around travellers, who still carry the names and purposes the plane has stripped from them.
Behaviour and Temperament
What unites the Unspoken is loss. Each has lost its name, and with it whatever held its self together, and each wanders without purpose, or with only the hunger to take what it lacks. The former travellers among them, the Fragment-Speakers, repeat scraps of conversations they no longer understand; the others feed.
Uses and Dangers
They give nothing. Their danger is that they want what the traveller still has.
Lore and Belief
Travellers say that every one of the Unspoken was once someone who came to the Silence and stayed, and the advice given is the same as for the Hollows: hold on to one's name. Whether that is true of the Void-Stalkers and the Wordless, which do not seem ever to have been people, is not known.
