The Answering Sound Crisis

The first great Orc-Gnome clash at one place, c. 141,000-c. 137,000 BR, when storm-driven Windscar parties starved on the shore of the Answering Sound and war-leaders tried the inner channels by force. See The Folds, the Scarps, and the Shore.

Overview

The Answering Sound Crisis was the first great Orc-Gnome clash at a single place, The Answering Sound, fought over parties left waiting on a cold shore until waiting became dying.

It falls late in The Tidelace-Windscar Approaches, when the split between the outer shore and the inner harbours has taken hold but has never yet been tried by a season of storms and crowding.

The Shore of Waiting

Gale after gale drives Windscar parties into the lee of the Sound just as the inner channels further along the coast are already full. Escort-bands bring parties whose passage was sworn; harbour-masters answer with warnings, holds, pilot shortages, and one more delay, each of which they are entitled to give.

The Forced Channel

Each side reaches for the charge that cuts deepest. Windscar escorts say the coast has learned to shut its doors without ever saying so: it keeps the shape of an answer and empties it. Harbour-masters say some escorts treat an answer on the outer shore as a claim on the harbour itself, and use hardship and pride to lean on the coast until it breaks.

Orcs fear careful readings turning into a shut door. Gnomes fear sworn passage turning into a shove against the harbour gate. At the Sound both fears come true at once.

Settlement and Aftermath

The harbours hold the pilots and the channels, and the settlement shows it: the outer shore stays separate from the inner harbour.

What the Orcs win, with their dead on the dunes, is declared answerability. The harbour-masters may still delay, hold a party offshore, send it elsewhere, or refuse inner entry where the coast truly cannot bear more. But a delay must now have a stated end, the shortage of pilots or room must be said openly, and passing danger must be kept apart from plain refusal. Windscar escorts gain no lasting claim on inner entry; they are taken in only for real need and good conduct on the shore, and must go where they are sent when the coast shows that letting them in would be a false harbour.

Historical Significance

The Sound stops meaning Gnome refinement or Orc arrival alone. It becomes a place too important in memory to stay local, beside The Measure Cistern. Escort captains still name the old answers aloud when they come down to it.

The Windscar Pacts remember that an answer with nothing behind it can be a shut door. The Gaugeward Leagues remember the burned quay, and that sworn arrival can become a shove against the harbour gate.
