The Leeward-Tidelace Measures

The far-side terms, c. 146,000-c. 140,000 BR, by which Halflings and Gnomes learned to make sense of each other's very different kinds of care. See The Folds, the Scarps, and the Shore.

Overview

Between the folds of the Foldward Commons and the harbours of the Gaugeward Leagues, the first lasting Halfling-Gnome trade took shape.

Both peoples have already been through their own feuds, The Sounding Gate Quarrel and The Measure Cistern Reckoning. Now fold carriers bring grain, fruit, and oil from the sheltered Leeward Folds down to the hard Tidelace Coasts year after year.

The Carry to the Coast

This is a quieter meeting than the Orc-facing ones, but not a safe one. Between the last fold terrace and the first landing lie bare spurs and cliff paths where raiders wait for laden carriers, and a landing that was safe at dawn may be wreck-ground by noon when the Long Grey comes in. A load that sits too long on a beach spoils or is looted; a boat sent out to meet it on a bad tide does not come back. Raider bands of the spurs grow rich on the carry: they learn the harvest-days, ambush the carriers on the cliff paths, and sell the loads down the coast. Fold carriers answer by travelling armed, and the first carrier companies that hire out as escorts, half sellsword and half porter, come from these paths.

Counted Loads and Declared Landings

The measures that grow up keep both kinds of care. Fold loads are counted in amounts a fold can actually spare, timed to its harvests rather than to outside hurry. Harbour landings are declared by signal, with stated windows and a plain warning when the sea will not allow the meeting. Neither side's caution has to pretend to be the other's.

The Leeward side keeps its right to say that enough is enough. The Tidelace side keeps its right to say that a promise made inland does not calm the sea.

Measures into Habit

With use, the same terrace-edge markets, carry-paths, and lee landings become familiar to both peoples, and so do their dangers: escorts hired against the spur-raiders, shipworm in the hulls of boats that wait too long at the landings, and congers that take the fingers of anyone careless at the nets. Fold elders learn that the coast's uncertainty is real and not mere disorder; harbour houses learn that a fold's count is a reckoning of lives, not a village excuse. The meeting is most visible at The Counted Lee.

Historical Significance

The measures close the far side's first triangle, while its Orc-Gnome side, The Tidelace-Windscar Approaches (c. 148,000-c. 138,000 BR), is still bleeding into shape. Orc passage, Halfling reserve, and Gnome harbour now all meet one another, and later fold-coast trade, its quieter quarrels, and its uneasy trust all start here.
