The Chromatic Chord

The Soundchain Selective Closure

The first great Orc-Gnome quarrel of the corridor, c. 109,000-c. 104,000 BR, in which the Soundchain harbours shut the corridor piece by piece and Windscar convoys forced the barred passages against hired harbour crews. See The Tidelace and the Soundchain Roads.

Overview

The Soundchain Selective Closure was the first great Orc-Gnome quarrel of the corridor age: whether the harbours could shut the Soundchain one stretch, one season, and one cargo at a time without strangling it.

It begins long after The Tidelace Coastward Exchanges, when traffic through The Soundchain Roads has grown heavy enough that what the corridor shuts matters more than whether the outer shore answers at all.

The Corridor Narrows

Long use brings its own strains. Some seasons crowd heavy convoys onto a few good transfer grounds; some cargoes need more pilots and guarded room than a station can give; some Windscar parties keep to the letter of the custom while leaning ever harder on the line between the outer sounds and the harbours behind them.

The Gaugeward harbour houses do not shut the coast. They do something subtler. One roadstead closes to heavy convoys in the storm season, as the Bare Shoulder always has. Another bars a certain cargo. A third keeps its quays for light trade only. Each closing is defensible. Together they leave the Windscar's heaviest and most needed traffic with nowhere to land.

Embargo in Pieces

The harbour houses say a corridor that can never say "not this cargo, not this season, not here" is not kinder, only less honest about what it can carry. Windscar escorts answer that if the heaviest traffic and the hardest seasons are always the ones filtered out, the closings are only an embargo broken into pieces. A people may be answered at every quay and still lose the coast.

Each side keeps its heroes and villains from those seasons: Orc war-crews tell of an escort captain who took a convoy through a barred sound at night under the wreckers' false fires and lost not one boat; Gnome harbours tell of a station keeper who relit her thrown-down beacon with her own boat's timbers while the raiders were still on the cliff.

Settlement and Aftermath

The coast holds the quays, and the settlement keeps its right to close by class. What the Orcs win is a refusal of strangling in disguise.

The quarrel sets the custom of declared class-closure. A harbour house may still close a route, a season, a kind of convoy, or a cargo where the corridor truly cannot bear it. But it must name what it closes and where, openly, and the closings along the whole corridor are answered for together. If enough of them add up to cutting one kind of trade off the coast, the Windscar can challenge the whole, not argue each quay in turn.

The Soundchain stays open, but warier. The custom that grows from this settlement is told in The Soundchain Closure Terms.

Historical Significance

The Selective Closure gives the later Orc-Gnome coast a subtler kind of fight than the Answering Sound ever saw: the danger is no longer one false welcome or one false refusal, but many small shuttings that together rebuild a wall without ever naming it.

The Gaugeward Leagues must answer for the shape of all their closings at once. The Windscar Pacts must learn to tell real strangling from the hard truth that not every cargo can land everywhere every season. Cargoes burned at anchor in the fighting still lie in the shallows of the sounds, and salvage crews and treasure-divers of both peoples still go down for them in a calm summer, past the fogbells and the cold.
