The Enclosure of the Seams

The taking of the Goblin seam-warrens by early Dwarven holdmaking, c. 465,000-c. 420,000 BR, which walled and smoked the Goblins out of the ground they held. See The Bridge Peoples.

Overview

The seam-warrens of the Ironspine margins were the first lasting Goblin order, and over a long span early Dwarven holdmaking took the ground they held.

It runs alongside The Holdmaking of the Ironspine and The Founding of the Ironspine Holds, and it is the first of three losses of place behind the Goblins' medieval lot.

The Seam-Warrens

Goblins descend from the threshold elder field described in Proto-Anchor Population Map, and they are recognizably themselves by the time the Elves and Dwarves stabilize. Their oldest heartland is the broken ground along the Ironspine margins: cave mouths, fracture belts, scree hollows, drain-seams, and the gaps where mountain rock meets forest and basin.

The first lasting Goblin order grew there. Warren-kin held named seams by gap-right: the hold of whoever had kept a passage open, knew where its water ran and where it would fall in, and had lived in it longest. Gap-right was shared among linked warrens and defended by warning, ambush, and disappearance rather than walls. It was remembered in the seams themselves, in scratched marks, cached tools, and crawlways rebuilt after every fall.

Enclosure

The rising Dwarven hold-world wanted exactly that ground. Holdmaking meant making passages sound and answerable to the hold-elders, and many of the passages it wanted were Goblin seams.

The taking was slow and, by Dwarven custom, simply right: a seam brought inside a hold's defended passage became hold-ground, because the hold could defend it and the warren could not. A warren inside it became a household with no voice, or trespassers in a stone the hold now kept. Warrens that resisted were walled out or smoked out. Some crawlways were sealed with their defenders still inside, and Goblin memory still counts the warrens that never came out. The holds did not call it conquest; they called it founding. The Goblins call it the seam-wars, and the loss of places they had held longer than anyone.

Historical Significance

The Enclosure gives the Goblins a beginning, a first order, and a first wound all at once. It is why Goblins, though as old as the Dwarves, enter history already driven out.

It also leaves a grievance in the medieval present that Dwarven histories rarely record. Goblin warren memory still names seams now deep inside Ironspine holds, and some underwall households hold that their presence there is an older right than the hold's own. Goblin tellers trace old raids on outlying hold workings, and the bitter feuds between some holds and the warrens on their scree, back to here.

Later losses build on this one: The Unlisting of the Warrens takes the place displaced Goblins later win back, and the medieval Iron Compacts are their answer to all of it.
