The First Regional Differentiations of Caeldon

How Caeldon's first enduring regions took shape after the world's making and before its peoples arose in them.

Overview

After its making, Caeldon first grows apart into lasting regions, long before its peoples claim homelands, borders, and thresholds in them.

Between The Creation of Caeldon and The First Material Lineages of Caeldon, the world stops being only a planet that lasts and starts keeping great contrasts age after age: forest canopy, mountain mass, deep basins, upland passes, and the first descents into the dark below the roots.

From World to Regional Memory

A world fit for history must do more than endure. It must keep its differences.

Once Caeldon stands as a lasting world, its lands take on a lasting character. Water gathers in the same low places. Heights rise and stay high. Vast living canopies, hard stone, sunken basins, and root-depths reaching down into the dark stop being passing moods of the surface and become the first memories of the land. The world begins to keep its shape across long ages.

These are not yet the named regions of later history. But here the land takes the bent from which those regions will grow. The regions told in detail so far are the first heartland of this growing-apart, not the whole map of Caeldon.

The First Durable Contrasts

The young world is defined by its contrasts, not by anyone living in it.

What will become the Elderweald and Crownboughs begins as a vast living canopy world, dense, towering, and unbroken, nothing like bare stone or open lowland. What will become the Ironspine and Stonewake Deeps begins as hard mountain and depth, carved by weight, crushing stone, seam, and descent; in that same stone, ages later, Dwarven holds will be cut, and lost works will lie below their lowest roads. What will become the Confluence Basins, Headwater Marches, and Lower Serath begins as a lower world of gathering waters, deep basins, and upland passes. Elsewhere on Caeldon other great lands take shape too, among them harsh, exposed dry uplands such as The Windscar Expanse.

Before the Peoples Harden

This growing-apart comes first because the peoples of Caeldon do not begin on empty ground.

When Elves, Dwarves, and much later Humans come into their long histories, they do so in a world whose great contrasts are already old. Forest, mountain, basin, frontier, and the threshold to the underworld are not made by any people. They are the inheritance in which every later way of life, every rise, and every war takes root.

That is why Caeldon's oldest histories are so bound to their lands. Peoples do not merely live in places. They grow in answer to lands that already call for tending, digging, road-building, delving, or descent, each in its own mix.

Historical Significance

The First Regional Differentiations of Caeldon join the lasting world to the peoples who will live on it.

Here Caeldon becomes not just a steady world but a world of lasting contrasts strong enough to shape its peoples. Without this step, the story would leap from the planet's making to peoples already marked by their lands. With it, the order runs true: Caeldon is made, its great lands grow apart, and only then do lasting peoples take shape within what those lands have given them.
