The Chromatic Chord

Long Settlement of the Balanced Core

The span from the Inward Sundering to the First Equilibrium, in which pockets of stability formed in the balanced core, failed, and formed again. See The Planes.

Overview

The Long Settlement of the Balanced Core is the immense age after the Sundering in which the surviving centre of the proto-anchor field is real, but not yet fully a world of matter.

The extremes are gone. What remains is a balanced core that must slowly learn to stand: the give-and-take of the Harmonics grows steadier across the ages, and the long road runs from surviving catastrophe to The First Equilibrium.

The Surviving Centre

After The Inward Sundering, a balanced centre remains because the most incompatible conditions have been flung outward into separate planes.

That surviving core is not yet the Material Plane. It is a half-made stuff that has escaped the collapse without yet finding any lasting order at great scale. Things persist, but unevenly. Mixed conditions can share it, yet they do not do so reliably across the whole.

The centre after the Sundering is not a finished middle world waiting for a name. It is an unfinished survivor.

An Age of Slow Reciprocity

The long settling of the core is won by give-and-take, not by conquest or sudden remaking.

No single Harmonic can claim the whole centre for good, but neither can lasting balance be taken for granted. Pockets of steadiness form, fail, and form again. Some reaches of the core settle sooner than others. Spatial law grows dependable only by degrees, and matter that meets and lasts remains an achievement, not a given.

So the age after the Sundering is nothing like the swifter settling of some deficit and surplus planes. Extremes can sometimes settle faster because they are only one thing. The balanced centre takes longer, because it must stay mixed without falling into chaos.

Towards the First Equilibrium

Over spans beyond reckoning, the give-and-take of the Harmonics stops being a desperate holding-on and becomes the core's own way of being.

That change is the true work of this age. The centre does not simply wait until The First Equilibrium happens to it. It is slowly worked towards that threshold, as dependable sharing, wider steady orientation, and ever firmer material law build up across it.

By the end of the settlement, the surviving core is ready to cross from mere persistence into a balance that holds itself up. That crossing is what The First Equilibrium names.

Historical Significance

The Long Settlement of the Balanced Core is why the Material Plane was not made in a single stroke.

The central balanced realm survived first, settled second, and lasted for good only after that. Without this immense middle age, the story of the cosmos would leap from breaking to peace. With it, one of the setting's deepest truths holds: a lasting reality is won through long, hard-bargained balance, never by instant healing.
