The First Human Emergence on Caeldon
The rise of Humans, c. 300,000-c. 220,000 BR, in the mixed country where the Confluence Basins meet the Headwater foothills. See The Ages of Caeldon.
Overview
The First Human Emergence on Caeldon is the age in which Humans appear as a native people of the planet, in the rich, unsettled country of the Confluence Basins and Headwater Marches.
They are born where river lowland meets mountain foot, not in one sheltered niche, and the bond between basin and headwater that they form here runs through the Confluence shaping, gathering, and rise that follow.
A Native Mixed-Zone Species
Humans come late to Caeldon, long after the oldest Elven and Dwarven peoples have taken flesh.
They carry no single elder inheritance the way the oldest Elves carry the Verdant and the Dwarves the Backbone. They are a native Material Plane people at home where country changes: river meets hill, wood meets meadow, good years meet bad. Their strength is not a deep inheritance but a knack for adapting, mixing, and thriving where several worlds meet.
That is why the many Human peoples of later ages are no accident. The variety is in them from the moment they first matter.
Basin and Headwater
The first Humans anyone could name grow up between the deep basins and the upland edge.
In the Confluence Basins, fat lowlands, rivers, and reed country feed many mouths, and the spring rise renews the ground and drowns the careless. In the Headwater Marches, foothills and gorges reward those who move fast, guard the passes, and know the ground, and snowmelt floods come down the gorges with little warning. Grey wolves follow the herds in hard winters, wild boar gore the careless hunter, and great wild kine graze where no one on foot goes near the bulls. Late in the age, on the heights above the headwaters, the elder Upland Colossal world begins raising terraces and ridge roads no Human hand could match.
Before the Confluence Rise
The first Human emergence comes long before Humans become one of Caeldon's great powers.
It precedes The Confluence Rise, where the basin-headwater world grows into the first great Human heartland, and the later Human Corridor Orders, Headwater Alignments, and Headwater and Serath Corridors that turn Human restlessness into roads, guarded crossings, and the rule of whoever holds them.
So Humans enter Caeldon's history first as a people made by mixed country, and only later as road-builders, lords of crossings, and rivals of older powers. Their first regional identity is told in The Gathering of the Confluence, and their first civilization in The Founding of the Confluence Marches.
Historical Significance
Humans later spread across unlike lands and press against the borders of older peoples because they were born that way: in mixed country, on overlapping paths, in settlements that had to move with the river. The line runs from here through the Confluence rise and the corridor ages to the long quarrels with the Elves of the forest and the Dwarves of the mountain.
Basin hearth-tales still begin in this age: the hunter who brought down a wild kine bull with a fire-hardened spear and fed a whole camp through the winter, the mothers who held a gorge-mouth against a wolf pack with brands until the snowmelt flood took it. Headwater children play wolf-and-fire at the edge of the firelight to this day. Even the first stories look up at the colossal terraces on the heights and wonder what their builders kept there.
