The First Dwarven Stabilization
The becoming of the Dwarves under the mountains, c. 475,000-c. 425,000 BR. See The Ages of Caeldon.
Overview
In The First Dwarven Stabilization, the oldest lasting Dwarven line takes flesh on Caeldon.
An older stone-born inheritance settles into a lasting Material Plane species, and the first Dwarven people spreads through the roots of the Ironspine. Every later hold, deep hold, frontier feud, and war in the deep stone begins with them.
From Lithic Inheritance to Material Species
The first Dwarves of Caeldon are not yet a hold people.
Their forebears bear the mark of the Iron Backbone more plainly: denser, shaped more directly by the earth's own force, less at home in ordinary planetary life. Over long ages on Caeldon that inheritance is settled into flesh rather than cast off. What comes of it is a true planetary people who still carry the stone in them: endurance, a memory for how things stand, and an ear for rock, though they are no longer creatures of the Harmonic itself.
Dwarves do not say they climbed out of the mountain. They say the Backbone's strength was set into living flesh, and held. They were not alone in it: the brace-gnawers of the deep rock, hog-sized burrowers with hides as hard as the stone they push through, come of the same old stone, and some holds still will not kill one.
The First Ironspine Dwarves
The first lasting Dwarves take root in the mountain-root country later called the Ironspine.
It is not yet split into the Ironspine Holds, the denser Stonewake Compact, and the bitter quarrels of the deep stone below. It is one broad people of chamber-cutting kin, elders whose word must bear weight like a pillar, defended passages, and memory cut into the rock.
They live with what the mountain sends: rockfall and avalanche on the faces, flood and bad air in the first workings, stone cats on the high ground above. The mountain made them as much as their blood did. Its depths rewarded endurance, keeping, and patient shaping, and buried everything else.
Before the Deep Holds
The first Dwarven stabilization comes long before the rivalries that sharpen Dwarven history.
It precedes the deep hold-clusters that later become the Stonewake Compact, the old forest-mountain feud over water that hardens along the Elderweald-Ironspine frontier, and the deep struggles after catastrophe around the Roothollows and the Rootstone Heartwell. Each needed one old people strong enough to split without breaking.
Here Dwarven life on Caeldon turns from a chance into a lineage, and the lineage grows strong enough to dig deeper, gather, and fight. The branch hardens in The Holdmaking of the Ironspine and becomes a civilization in The Founding of the Ironspine Holds.
Historical Significance
Every Dwarf who fights another Dwarf fights kin. The holds of the heights, the sealed deeps, and the frontier clans do not spring from separate births; they are all this one old people, and their oldest songs all go back to the same mountain roots.
Those songs make the first age a hero-age: the kin who cut the first chamber with a stone cat waiting on the ledge above, the elder who stood in a flooding working until the last child was out. The first workings themselves were abandoned long ago to flood and bad air, sealed with their tools and their dead inside. Deep-delvers in the Ironspine still argue over where they lie and what was buried with the first kin, and the holds forbid the search, because a hold that broke into its ancestors' grave would not be forgiven by any other.
